- Van Allen Clinton McCoy (January 6, 1940 - July 6, 1979) was an American musician, record producer, arranger, songwriter, singer and orchestra conductor. He is known best for his 1975 internationally successful song "The Hustle". He has approximately 700 song copyrights to his credit, and is also noted for producing songs for such recording artists as Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Stylistics, Aretha Franklin, Brenda & the Tabulations, David Ruffin, Peaches & Herb, Lesley Gore and Stacy Lattisaw.
If you were breathing in 1975, then you may have heard this song a few million times on the radio.

If you were alive and young in 1975, THIS was the BIG CLUB SONG ! You heard this EVERYWHERE ! The era of dance was all around. The Clubs, the Music, the Dress. It was all about going out with your friends on a Friday and Saturday night and dance . The youth of today have no idea the fun and freedom there was back then. Greatest memories of my young life !!!!!

When this song first came out I was 14 15 - i was a jeans and corduroy kid mixed with surfer baggies and earth shoes style closet disco lover. I remember later clubbing in Ft. Lauderdale with really long hair, rose colored glasses, corduroys or jeans and maybe just maybe a polyester shirt. The disco guys couldn’t believe the moves I had and didn’t like that i had all the chicks dancing with me. Awwww the fun i had to this song and lots more.

I still long for those halcyon days of disco and the beautiful dance music that everyone just had to get on the floor to and let it rip. What a wonderful time we experienced but only those of us that lived through it can really appreciate. As time passes by so swiftly and we reminisce on those days, all I can say is that I was privileged to have lived those times to the hilt.

This was it. This was the epitome of Disco. When we would go to the clubs to dance we would recognize this song from the very first note, we'd jump up from our seats, run to the dance floor and in pure harmony would do the greatest dance ever also called The Hustle, god, I miss those days so much.

I watched my mom and her friends perfect "The Long Island Hustle" in our living room to the "Giant Disco Single" of this song on repeat. They'd rest while the arm repositioned to start it over. I watched them dress up to go party in the Hamptons. I watched my sissy practice the Cotillion " showstopper" to this song. They're gone now, and I am still here. This song brings them all alive again in my mind and heart.

The Hustle Brings me good memories of my childhood. From the Bronx where I was born. In 1975 I was six years old. The 70's and the 80's best years of my life. When New York, the world and pepole were different.
I couldn't agree with you more...Society was different because values were taught and appreciated. Those values were the real jewels of the person -and it reflected in 'everything'. Our health, clothes, jobs, relationships, etc., etc. No one competed to get something, but everyone lived to be something 'unique'.
The music of those times was 'real' because it brought out the beauty of culture(s). If anything is missed, it's the American culture that global society wanted to be a part of. Not 'today'.

@@theodoreritola9758 don't forget "hot pants" (bib and shorts), and the mini, midi and maxi - the skirt lengths in the early 70s; wearing shorts under a long coat. There was no pre-faded jeans in those days so you would get a river stone and rub down your jeans to get that faded look.
