androgynous/cityboy style is not really how i dress, but i clicked bc of the gorgeous thumbnail and was not disappointed! im such a big fan of popeye and japanese magazine design ❤
You don't know how much this series helped me develop my style. Thanks for creating this space, thanks for making accessible information and for making this fun.
Just wanted to add that the specific style of hiking shoe (laced all the way to the toe, etc) are called approach shoes! They’re typically meant for the hike before a rock climb, and occasionally for some light climbing (hence the rubber toe cap) :)
+1 on vintage Pendleton, sizing can be a little weird but that’s the case with lots of vintage clothing. I’d also recommend vintage Woolrich if you want similar quality to the Pendleton but slightly more affordable.
I have been all in on corduroy since I found a pair of second hand LL.Bean loose pants about 5-6 years ago. At this point they are screaming to be replaced because some of the parts are very worn but corduroy is just not that easy to find. It is one of my favorite fabrics for fall/winter, the weight feels so nice on the body!
Yup about the workwear brand in Japan having completely different stuff and slightly different branding. Lots of that here in Japan, sometimes they’re licensing a defunct or still operating brand but making completely different things for the Japanese market. I bought a wranglers jacket made for Tomorrowland that was made of fine suiting wool material and on the label it said that it was made under license of Wrangler USA but under a Japanese brand/holding co. The fit as you could imagine is also tailored for Japan. I saw some other revived American vintage sportswear brands over here as well 👀
love the content!! fun fact the shoes you highlighted at the end (with the rubber soles and toecap) are actually a form of climbing shoe - they're called approach shoes, you can wear them hiking and actually to climb (regular shoes you'd tear through the toe without the rubber). another super popular style is the Keen Jasper - comes in a ton of diff colors!
06:10 i literally just made a fit yesterday with the flannel as an inner layering layer and it’s such a nice detail , subtle yet and effective and easy way to add a layer of dimension/ interest to the fit as well as colour without it being over bearing
I loved that corduroy 2 pieced oversized suit. That was gorgeous. I like L.L Bean…Duluth Trading is good for some interesting work wear and high quality flannel as well.
I started viewing this channel because I am also into Japanese fashion, more towards hiking stuff. Stayed for the other content and discovered new brands from you, we also have a similar build 😅 which helps 🍑
This is exactly my style! I lived on Okinawa in the 70‘s- moved to Colorado, did the preppy thing, and just kept it going- because it works…. Thank you algorithm for this Goddess!
Started picking up Popeye mags a few months ago and they’re so sick. They make mags not just about clothes but about architecture and cooking. I also picked up a Fudge Magazine issue that was only about denim and it was so sick
Naadam has some pretty good Mongolian cashmere. Use to intern for them in college. If correct, brand owner owns the cashmere manufacturing or works exclusively with one supplier in Mongolia. Would recommend.
i didnt know you had a youtube channel until recently (i've only followed you on instagram) and i'm so happy i found this!! I love the format you film in and the way you talk about things. thank you!
I’ve been wearing Ralph Lauren since the mid 70s. I still dress extremely preppy like I did in junior high in high school. I truly appreciate this vlog!
Straight leg corduroy has been a mainstay in my style since I was in high school. For context, I’m a scholar in California, always wanted to look the part for myself at least. I’m 28 now; I feel like it’s always elevated an otherwise t-shirt and trousers outfit with an oversized blazer in a denim or boiled wool.
tbf lst time I was in Tokyo (August) and numerous times I went there the most popular style is those grungy/gothic style those shinjuku/shibuya folks wear. I think ametora is a bit rarer but I still see some on the train, and even on disneyland during 38c summer lol
but still nice video I really enjoyed it! Them styles you mentioned are probably now more tucked in places like shimokitazawa. Even though I was in Japan for quite some time, I mainly bought on zozotown LOL until I actually find a nearby thrift store I could go easily. Also funny story I was in utsunomiya and saw that EXACT buzz rickson hickory jacket LMAO they looked really good but sadly I didnt fit them otherwise instant cop. Ill def check out some of the brands you mentioned earlier, I've been looking for a blazer but sadly not enough money to afford most brands
As far as the sacoche bags “and wander”makes a really good one I’ve had mines for 3/4 years now and no rips and I’ve used it snowboarding, hiking, music fests and the rain and I have no complaints
Yesterday I went down the rabbit hole of "waxed canvas bags." They too look like paper, but are very durable. There are several small US businesses that make them. I love the look of the fabric, but I don't need another bag! I've been carrying my Yoshida Porter bag--I love it so much. I'm also looking forward to wearing a brown (wide-wale) corduroy suit that I bought in Japan last year (used). It was only 3000 yen and you can tell it's not of the highest quality, but it's cute and the cut is interesting/different. The pants are a bit tapered and cropped and the jacket is very boxy and wide. I thrifted a lot of men's stuff in Japan last year!
Wow, I really like your content. Often people only scratches the surface when it comes to specific styles of clothing, but you really try to explain it on a deeper level. One question though, what brands/items would you recommend when it comes to warm down jackets/parkas for winter in this style?
Gabardine is a type of weave that’s water resistant. Burberry trenches are made with gabardine. I imagine that they like wool gabardine because it’s warm and stays relatively dry which may be an indication of climate?
14:20 buying hiking gear you have to be aware of what materials are used, since most of gortex and other performance materials use forever chemicals which are polluting environment you walk in since it's being shed from hiking clothes, boots and backpacks.
Look into Denim Production in Occupied Japan after WWII. A lot of Allied Companies (lead By the American Military and English Military) sent textile looms to Japan to aid in economic recovery. Many of these companies either abandoned the looms/mills or kept trade agreements after the occupation.. Yarmo may be a company that produced textiles in Japan. REGD is an acronym for Registered.
On the subject of how there are Japanese versions of heritage western brands, you are most likely correct with your 7-11 analogy. The most well known example within the fashion world would probably be The North Face in Japan, which is essentially a different company producing clothing under the TNF license. It got so popular that it's known as purple label TNF now, and there are international consumers. Similarly, within the luxury space Burberry Blue Label/Black Label was produced in Japan by Sanyo Shokai under a similar licensing agreement. Burberry has since withdrawn the license, but the line was so big in Japan that they simply rebranded to "Blue Label/Black Label" and remained popular. To be more topical, within the workwear space, you might be interested in Ben Davis, a heritage workwear brand that was once ubiquitous in the Bay as the workwear uniform of the San Francisco longshoremen. Now, Ben Davis is barely sold and seen even in the Bay. Instead, they are remain popular in East Asia, where you will find Ben Davis, presumably also operating under a license, in every Americana shop. I can personally attest to the brand's popularity in Taiwan. Ironically, the Ben Davis clothes in Taiwan and Japan are still emblazoned proudly with the text "San Francisco", despite being largely forgotten in its home city.
this video suddenly popped up on my feed and I really love how you introduce cool fashion. Also I love how gender neutral is since I am a male. Thanks from south korea
Ugh I’m dreaming of the perfect wide wale corduroy pants. Men’s, probably 90s, Ralph Lauren? Timberland? Ll bean? 100% cotton. Wide cut. Big cuff. Double pleated. Warm med brown. For $30 on eBay or at my local thrift please I’ve been good this year 😇
Yarmo probably sold the license of their brand to a Japanese Company. There are a few examples of this the most commonly known one is probably The North Face Purple Lable which is owned by Goldwin in Japan and Korea. I think this is quit common in Japan.
A designer/individual/group from Japan probably bought the license to use Yarmo’s name for that heritage. People love heritage especially for workwear.
lots of Japanese companies hold licenses to western brands, but operate completely independently, allowing them to craft their own look and interpretation of the brand
"approach shoes" (by Scarpa and La Sportiva - not all of their shoes are like this but generally the extra toecap = approach shoes) at 16:10 are for rock climbing / designed to be worn on the "approach" or hike to a rock climbing spot in the woods. please do not turn them into fashion because the outdoors industry already struggles with overconsumption, dilution of quality because of fashion over function, and price depending too much on trends rather than practicality. i encourage anyone to get into climbing and buy the right gear, but like the Arctery'x fashion craze is stupid and wasteful - environmentally harmful because overconsumption, and if a brand is struggling to meet demand, quality usually goes down so we all have to deal with that

LL Bean is good, if you want something warmer the 70s-90s Pendleton wool shirts are pretty good price and are very versatile.
