When comparing two laps at the same track we want to who where something happened, rather than when it happened so that we can take a deeper look at a specific point on the track and see where we can improve, or as the case may be, help someone else improve.
This is because when we look at our position on track vs only time, after the first corner, or even potentially beforehand, the time becomes irrelevant as all you're going to see is that yes, the other car is ahead. For example, if you're 1 second behind and still on a straight when your reference lap is already in a braking zone for the next corner, there is no useful data you can gain when comparing these two data points.
So what do you do instead? When you switch to distance as a reference, the data becomes meaningful as Tim explains with race data to show how it works in practice too.
