Especially when you consider that the image she tore up was a particular Pope who had some high personal prestige beyond his high office. This is after the Pope that once threaten the Soviet Union that he would resign and return to Russian occupied Poland as a simple parish Priest. I watched the Sinead episode live that night. I remember when she tore it up, the strange thing was it was totally silent. You could tell the live audience didn't know what to expect or what exactly happened or how to react. I guess they didn't show the applause lights for that reason either. So it was just silence afterward. That was back before the internet, and most people didn't see it live and it took days for talk of what happened to spread around. It was the final song at the very end of the show, and that's also by the time a lot of people have stopped watching because it just ends so late at night. I then saw that in a rerun not too many years later and they cut that out. Anyway, it was cool I saw it live and knew that it was unscripted and was going to be a big deal.

I'm not convinced the Super Bowl halftime thing "destroyed" Janet Jackson's career, per se. Her next few albums - the certified-platinum 20 Y.O., followed by Discipline and Unbreakable - hit 2, 1 and 1 on the U.S. chart. Granted, her singles success dwindled after the wardrobe malfunction, but that's probably because radio airplay figures into the Hot 100 (as opposed to the albums chart, which is strictly sales-based).
Meanwhile, Janet continued to appear in movies and still had a successful string of tours. It was unlikely that her career would ever return to the Control/Rhythm Nation levels, and that incident certainly did not help the cause, but Janet didn't fall off the face of the earth in the same way others on this list seemed to.

I don't mean this to sound insulting but yes, that is, and always will be, an obvious fact. The goal of any company is always profit. That is not a bad thing, we need companies to make money. We certainly prefer they make money by promoting goods and services we actually want but if they can get away with it, they will produce what is profitable and hope they can tell us what to want. Business-mindedness is absolutely necessary to make it in any industry, ESPECIALLY entertainment.

He was prosecuted for taking the girl out of state, not for statutory. And he dated white women, which was an issue then. As far as his songs went, he was just playing what was popular then, its not like he was a Joe Biden: Rock and Roll was still young and it was teenage girls that were buying the records. And he did a lot of cool songs that werent about Sweet Little Sixteens: Roll Over Bethoven, Brown Eyed Man, Maybellen, 40 Days, etc, and his autobiographical Johnny B Goode.
