It is important to note that the mechanic of throwing in tani otoshi is the dropping of tori's body (otoshi), who sits low and drops uke with them. It is not any kind of blocking or reaping of the leg of uke (as would be the case in the much less common side sacrifice throw, yoko gake). As you can see in this video, tori just extends their leg to sit low. There is no contact at all between tori and uke's legs in the attack version shown first, and minimal, inconsequential contact in the counter version shown second. This technique injures so many knees (and maybe ankles too) because many judoka misunderstand the mechanic of the throw and apply pressure on the leg of uke in ways they shouldn't. The worst offender is straight-up sitting on uke's leg sideways, but I'm pretty sure to be safe, one shouldn't intentionally look for action between their leg and uke's at all. It's fine if uke happens to trip over tori's leg (and it's probably always gonna happen in scrappy situations unlike in this demonstration video), but I just wanted to point out what is important to look for when performing the throw (proper drop and bringing uke down along), and what is not important / undesirable (blocking uke's leg).
Wow It is good to find such comments. I realized this problem several years ago and found many serious injuries videos on UA-cam. I think the injuries are mostly from BJJ jodos. Many players do this move by holding and turning body while falling in order to get upper position and score. This can apply a great torque on uke’s knee, sometimes even knees. I was once very close to bad injury but I quickly kick my foot to air and fall. The instant move saved my joint but I still felt there was a lump in the knee for almost a year. Be careful of those who do this wrongly.
@@runningcat3504 As someone who was previously injured this exact way by a BJJ brown belt, I cannot agree more. It took me almost a year to regain full and painless knee mobility.
I guess im asking randomly but does someone know a trick to get back into an instagram account..? I stupidly lost my login password. I would love any tips you can offer me.

I was about to ask, why some judokas think it's a dangerous throw. Your comment cleared my confusion. Thanks.

why are there mostly english speakers on a Japanese sports page xD
Asking why there’s English anywhere is kinda strange.
1.3 billion people speak English around the world, and Judo is an international interest.
