  • The latter part of the ITN Morning News from the early hours of Sunday, 9th March, 1997. Stories of the day include mandatory HIV screenings being considered for doctors, an overhaul of the pension system, possible contaminated water, Prince William's confirmation, and the fact that in China you could see both a solar eclipse and the Hale-Bopp comet simultaneously.
Sports-wise, David Coulthard has just won the Australian GP in which Damon Hill somehow went out on the parade lap, Man Utd lost to Sunderland, free-scoring Bolton hit seven, and there were mad scenes at the Goldstone Ground which saw Ray Wilkins attacked by a pitch invader. Straddling the news and sport divide, the match-fixing trial of Bruce Grobbelaar, John Fashanu, Hans Segers, and a Malaysian businessman had reached a deadlock with no verdict returned. All were eventually cleared of all charges (subsequent libel actions notwithstanding), though personally I've never been convinced in the slightest that nothing dodgy was going on.
Also contains two ad breaks a few promos.
Many thanks to Ben for providing this recording.

A very " unfashionable " yet attractive Nicorette ad 😮

It's a strange one, isn't it? It sort of insinuates that men fancy women who they think smoke, but then quickly go off them if they find they use Nicorette. I'm sure that's not the message they intended, but...

What makes this finding of episodes of Emu harder than some of the 1990s shows is that the TV series broadcast in late 2000s/early 2010s, which was at the end of the time when people stopped recorded things on VHS tapes, at that time I think shows were recorded on a sky/freeview box dvr, strangely enough I’ve never thought of this did people ever record tv shows on a dvd? At least the TSC uploads might open up a bit. Some People nowadays are looking for 2000s shows as the generation moves on, this might help a little bit. If I don’t think it’s going to be that successful am going to another wiki on lost media wiki. If I might plan to do a video blog about the tv series in the future, like some UA-camrs have done to a couple of shows. A think very little people remember that it had a reboot, I think some didn’t know that a reboot existed. Anyways as always I hope you will keep digging for more episodes or asking your fellow friends.

You're absolutely right about the timing involved in this - Toby's Emu reboot was after most people had ditched VHS, but in 2024 it's now this era that's starting to come into the 'nostalgia' window.
I definitely had a DVD recorder at the time, both for VHS transfers and occasionally to record something from the telly which I wanted to keep, but they were a lot more faff than they were worth for the general population. Herein lie further spanners in the works: DVD±R(W)s recorded 15 or so years ago may very well not work any more, especially if they were cheap discs. Also, computers these days don't come with DVD drives as standard, potentially making the process of getting any recording onto UA-cam even less likely.
Not that I'm giving up yet, of course, and I'm glad you're not either. Do let me know if you get round to that video blog you mention.

I sometimes ask, how many people do remember that there was a reboot a of Emu, I don’t think that many, I think some people didn’t or still don’t even know that a reboot existed. Another way is could you ask some others that might have recorded it on DVD? Especially Season 2? If only you recorded it at the time, either Sky box for DVD, it could actually work, but it’s just foresight. The TSC with his episodes extracted them from Skybox to mp4 in order to work.

@@mathgoodison8096 Yep, I can't believe I didn't record certain things when I had the chance. My priorities were very much elsewhere for most of the 00s.
You're right that Toby's Emu was never that well known, compared to other CITV shows from the decade like (say) My Parents Are Aliens - again, timing is everything, and it probably came just too late. I'll keep up the search.

As Toby Emu wasn’t well known, or is now heading towards obscurity, I am in the early stages of planning my video retrospective documentary review on the series, I am planning out the early stages of the script currently and the intro. I’ve been thinking of doing this since other UA-camrs did reviews on other obscure shows such as Underground Ernie, Trapped, Jungle Run etc. my plan is to that the intro will brief on the earlier Emu series, quick mention on other reboots such as Basil Brush etc, and then start to mention the reboot Emu series, a review of series 1, a review of series 2, quick info about Toby Hull and a conclusion of the series. Should be around 10 mins long. That might spark some attention. Unfortunately I don’t think you ever recorded it? I never had a recorder at the time and I wish I did.

@@mathgoodison8096 Just seen this comment - that video retrospective sounds like a great idea! I don't want to rush you, but mid-July could be a good time for you to have something Emu-related online (as we're coming up to a certain 40th anniversary). No guarantees, of course.
