I think vaders choking the rebel the old fashioned way because i think george wants to display how big and imposing with strength before explaining the force later on with luke and the second act
The sides aren't simply cut off, it is pan and scan, which means that the focus moves to where the action is taking place on the screen. The "theory" wasn't that they made it square for TVs. The reality is that early CRT TVs had low resolutions and widescreen presentations looked terrible on them because everything was shrunk down (diminishing all detail). When pan and scan was done right, it looked great.
It's weird to hear the term resolution for technology like this, then again I'm not really sure what the terms means. Resolution, 4K, Frame Rate, and refresh rate are terms I hear all the time but know nothing about. Off hand I would assume pan and scan either changed face or was an old technology by the late 90's. After that time all tapes seemed to say "This video was formatted to fit this screen". Unless that message refers to something else.
johnbrnssr Resolution refers to the tiniest detail a screen can present. On these older screens it's the finest detail you can see that doesn't get overshadowed by blurriness. In cutting off the sides they created a bigger and therefore clearer picture. In modem screens, resolution is limited by the number of squares (pixels) making up the image. Anything smaller than a square can't be seen. The number represents how many squares there are; 4k means there are ~4,000 columns of squares (and ~2,000 rows) while 1080 meant that there were 1080 rows (and ~2,000 columns).
I agree, I like a well-done pan and scan on old video formats. In fact, I'm kind of annoyed that most LaserDiscs are widescreen. They're wasting so much of the resolution that's gained over VHS.
Thank you for making this, I found an old copy from a relative and noticed the addition of “Episode IV: A New Hope” and how the screen is slightly shifted to the left and was worried we didn’t have the most original copy, but this video eased these fears. Thanks!
There are a few other Tell-Tale signs, however if the year on the movie is before 1997, it's the original, all be it with some restoration and Pan and Scan. Anything after that year is the special edition.
I just found these exact copies at a thrift store. Bought all three of them for 49¢ each. From what I understand these tapes are about 35 years old. The picture is pretty worn out which is to be expected but the sound is pretty good.
If the pictures doesn't jump up and down a lot, and there aren't "Scratches" on the picture, it could be just seeing the original version. Let me explain a little. When the movie was first released on VHS, it was pretty much taken directly from the original film strip. As such there where no special effects added to make the picture any better. From my experience the original Star Wars was really dirty looking. I'm pretty used to the THX releases of the movie, and was amazed to see how "Brown" everything looked in the original.
@trossies but it still wasn't intended for sale, especially not when it came out. What I meant was the first one officially released to own as the distributor intended.
There was an official home video release of Star Wars which didn't include "Episode IV A New Hope" in the opening crawl, i.e., the theatrical version bonus discs on the 2006 DVD release.
@@juliabrnssr I only know there were some varying LD releases, and some were theatrical versions.. these dated laserdisc masters ended up on the 2006 DVD Bonus discs and is referred to as the GOUT (George’s Original Unaltered Trilogy)
0:09 The very first home video release of any Star Wars film came in *May 1982* when 20th Century Fox Video released Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope on VHS, Betamax, LaserDisc, CED VideoDisc, and V2000 tape cassettes.
What was better about the VHS and Laserdiscs is that they had better lighting than the DVDs and the blu-rays. These newer formats ruined the coloring of the film.
I'll have to take your word for it. Only ever saw the DVD version once when it looked like this. www.covercity.net/cover/dvd-covers-star-wars-episode-iv-a-new-hope-6236 I do see where you are coming from though. Seems like you can only remaster something so far until it's too bright/Smeared with Colours, or Until the Audio sounds Crystallized. Also there seems to be a Blur effect if the camera moves to fast.
The television reminds me of Fred Sanford and the one he treasured in the show. I’m looking at my exact same year vhs tape in similar condition.I ditched comcast and amazon now I’m back looking through my old VHS and DVD’s
It would be my hunch that (to the question regarding Darth Vader using his hand rather than the force), Darth used his hand for two reason, 1) since he is mostly machine, it may in fact take far much less energy to get his hands dirty at times rather than expend the energy to use the force... and, 2) this was a moment of heated in-your-face anger; the show of physical force demonstrated the real anger or menace he had for the Rebellion. It is my contention that hands-on brute force demonstrated Darths real (mechanical) strength, which I feel is clearly more menacing than he using the force, such as in the case of Darth choking Adm. Conan Antonio Motti.
I'm glad you liked it, if that would be the case you will probably notice a few details have changed. As it stands, I wouldn't dare tempt fate but uploading the whole thing. I'm surprised there aren't even ads on this video.
That is one of the reasons I like to collect the old CBSFOX VHS tapes. They don't usually have commercials. (This one actually does have commercials but at the end of the tape). I guess I'll have to chalk it up to a false memory, I could have sworn the box said 1986 at one point, but sure enough it says 1984. I knew about that last point. I'd say you are the 35th person to tell me this. As for the tape being from 1990, I'm curious how you came to this conclusion. Was it the CBS FOX opening? The Colour of the tape? Or perhaps the sticker on the tape? I'm very curious as to what the differences are.
Odd thing is, I have more Nostalgia for the DVD releases of the Prequels, so I stuck with those. Plus I have no idea how difficult it is to get a hold of Episode III. I've seen I a few times in my travels but didn't see much of a reason in getting it.

I have that dvd
I defaulted to watching those versions when I was 5 when I found out that ‘Jedi Rocks’ wasn’t in that version of Jedi. Even then I found it cringy
The laserdisc release didn’t have the Episode 4 title. That’s how the Harmy Cut was possible
