- In this video I'll unbox my newest ebay purchase for you..... The first ever release of Star Wars on VHS, released in 1982. As an added bonus I'll put it into my VHS player for the first time and you will see it either play or not (and see a grown man cry if it doesn't play).
It was the actual version that was in theaters in 1977. That's why people want it for those who hate special edition versions.
Mike D No it wasn't the title crawl was changed for the 1st vhs release the only way to view the one in theaters is the 2006 DVD bonus disc
(1) The bonus discs aren't like the original either because they are based on a bad 1993 laser disc transfer. (2) Other than the pan & scan formatting and the title crawl, the 1982 version IS like the original theatrical release. On a CRT (or even a 4x3 LCD) pan & scan (when done correctly) is much better than a widescreen (VHS) presentation because widescreen loses too much detail.
@@specializedwookie229 Or Harmy's Despecialized restored blu ray.
Mike D dude, they realesed the original edition 4 or 5 more times after
@@specializedwookie229 no that's the 1993 laser disk with the original opening craw added back in
And they didn't rewind the f***ing tape!! That has always been the bane of my existence!! Great to have the un touched version. I still have the originals on VHS before the 1997 Special Edition came out.
DO NOT DONATE YOUR VHS TO THE SALVATION ARMY OR GOODWILL THEY WILL BE THROWN AWAY! JUST KEEP WWHATYOU HAVE AND USE THEM! DON'T LET THEM GO EXTINCT!
The picture on your CRT TV looks awesome for a VHS video tape.
Pretty cool talking about the life-time rental agreement. I learned something cool.
I have the same version.
I was able to get the same one we rented back then when our mom and pop video store liquidated their assets due to store closure.
hi mate can i have an epic question? :p I saw this original release many years ago. Try to find this version from 77 on VHS or any digital rip from this source but .. its maybe impossible... anyway i have a one question for u as a movie fan . Does C3PO in the original theatre and VHS release of this 1977 movie a one silver leg??? Any version i downloade is in gold.... thats strange to me and the CGI acenes are horrible.. im looking for this one. So do u remember the leg color in this 1977 version? :p thnx for response
David, I can watch it this weekend and report back.
U wil be great :p
Man I havent heard those TV sounds in a LOONG time, LOL
I have a good condition VHS library rental of star wars as well.
awesome find good sir! I have the laserdisc counterpart to this, tis always nice to watch the "pre-special edition" Star Wars :p
Just found one of these treasures at a yard sale in Fresno, CA last week for a dollar! Thanks for sharing your video!
4:37 the special edition actually made it so there was SO much more storm troopers there.
In 1977, a silent, English-subtitled Super 8 reel version of the film was released by Ken Films.
The very first home video release of any Star Wars film came in May 1982 when 20th Century Fox Video released Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope on VHS, Betamax, LaserDisc, CED VideoDisc, and V2000 tape cassettes.
I noticed on my stereo system that this tape doesn't expand the sound to other speakers as any 2 channel stereo signal should. I am wondering if that was because this was before Dolby pro logic was out. This tape doesn't seem to utilize the Dolby b noise reduction that VHS tapes all had so that leads me to believe they did not encode the stereo tracks. No Dolby logos on the VHS case. No HI-FI stereo logo just(stereo-mono compatible) Usually if pro logic detects a signal without surround info or the stereo tracks are a fold down of a mono signal it will send it to the center channel to simulate proper mono. That is what this does. There is a bit of reverb coming from the other speakers. Thoughts?
by the time Empire came out on VHS in Nov. 1984 they were a little more accessible to the public, but were still priced with intention to rental, about $80-90
Thanks. That must be the original copy! mine has the CBS/FOX logo and 20th century Fox Logo on it. what did you think of the Force Awakens?
You have the 1990 realease. They are the theater version
Can someone explain to me why this tape just says "Star Wars", even tho it came out on 1982? The "Episode 4 A New Hope" subtitle was added in 1981 to my knowledge so in theory this tape should say A New Hope also.
I do still own a copy of the Trilogy box set on VHS when it was digitally remastered with THX . It’s still the originals just remastered and cleaned up. Most recently however I went got the “despecialized” edits from Harmy. They are fantastic ! I also got the “revisted” edits from Adywan. Still waiting on his version of Jedi.
Who ever last rented this tape out, never Rewound it. There used to be a fine at our local library for tapes not rewound.
What is the opening crawl like?
***** A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away . . .
STAR WARS
EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE
It is a period of civil war. etc.
Yeah, I wasn't exactly thrilled when I put in an ORIGINAL, PRE-SE video and saw the evil words EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE staring back at me. SOOOOO NOT COOL.
+Mary Lou Rollins That's because by the time A New Hope was first released on VHS and the other formats in 1982, The Empire Strikes Back was already released in theaters in 1980 (It was also the year prior to Return Of The Jedi hitting theaters). Sometime between those times was when they added the Episode IV: A New Hope to the opening crawl. Therefore there wasn't a home video release without A New Hope on it until the 2 disc DVD releases with the unaltered versions of the films on it in 2006.
Did you know that there is a video rental library version of For Your Eyes Only?
question. i found a big box release of star wars similar to this case no rental thing at the bottom. cbs/fox at top stereo mono at the bottom etc. is it a first release for public sale ? i cant find many similars or any for sale as example
Hi. I have a copy of this but live in Australia so am unable to play it back on my shitty PAL machines. Is there any way we could get in touch and discuss a share of a video transfer of your tape?
So, does your daughter ever use the 2600? i cant imagine it would hold much interest for her given the rest of them but you never know
I have this same Video Rental Copy on Beta.
OH NO! Beta!
He didn’t rewind it. Charge him a fee.😄
I bought the Video Rental Library on Amazon. Thought I was getting the CBS Fox version, but the seller said Video Rental Library copy. I was very surprised and love it. My rental number is R 194028 for my tape. Just watched it and is in very good shape
This is going to sound weird but, can you watch it and see if c3po has a silver right leg? Is it a subsequent change by lucas? Thanks
Thanks man, couldn't remember him ever having a silver leg!!
I have the rental tape, i can't remember if mine has the Foxvid1 or Foxvid2 watermark in the video.
I found it funny you rewound to one of the less controversial changes made to the modern versions, where Solo is chasing the stormtroopers only to descover a larger foyer of stormtroopers around the corner… this one is the original!
does that copy of star wars have a CBS FOX video logo on it or just the 20th century fox logo? also any previews on the tape?
+Tim Entwisle It has the 20th Century Fox video logo on the case and the cassette. There is absolutely nothing before or after the film. No previews, bonus features, or even an FBI copyright warning. Check out the UA-cam series, From The Star Wars Home Video Library by Nathan Butler if you wanna see some cool details about the Star Wars home video releases. The episode about the Video Rental Library release of A New Hope on VHS is Episode 3.
Previews on VHS tapes did not become a thing until 1986, when studios found that marketing cassettes became affordable when finding corporations to sponsor the release. This was when trailers, Diet Coke and toy ads were attached to the beginnings of each film.
Tatooinesky,
Can you please tell me how old is your vhs player?
That's awesome
I wish i had star wars vhs :(

Amazing!👍
There is a remastered wide-screen original theatrical release on VHS. Record it onto high def dvd and its much better 👍
Wow!
Bummer. I was hoping for the 1982 side access drawer case.
I've seen those, but the only one I saw in person with the drawer case is porky's
Very nice video!
Damn, tape rewinding costs $1. And the tape not rewound!
I HAVE THIS!!!!! It's not hi-fi (it says STEREO/MONO COMPATIBLE.) Also, the beginning of the tape plays as follows:
20th Century Fox
A Lucasfilm Limited Production
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away . . .
STAR WARS
Episode IV
A NEW HOPE
It is a period of civil war. etc.
The warning:
FBI WARNING
Federal law provides severe civil and criminal penalties for the unauthorized reproduction, distribution, or exhibition of copyrighted motion pictures and video tapes. (Title 17, United States Code, Sections 501 and 506.)
The Federal Bureau of Investigation investigates allegations of criminal copyright infringement. (Title 17, United States Code, Section 506.)
The label on the top is fine, but the label on the side of the tape, (2:47,) is peeling off. And the reel on the left doesn't lock, so I'm always fixing that. Also, there's a rental label right under the label on the top of the tape.
But the weirdest part is that my numbers don't match. The box is 172874 and the tape is 184089. Reply if you have tape 172874 and/or box 184089. Also reply with the numbers on your box.
P.S. Any word on if rentals exist for ESB and ROTJ?
Was it on beta?
mcog 2006 Yes. I have this same version on Beta.
is this vhs the actual original one where Jubba was a man?
Gogsley Jabba was only in the first theatrical release in 1977 a man. There was a second release in 1977 where the scene with jabba was cutted.
@@lormus6911 Jabba the hutt never appeared in the first theatrical release, because this scene was cut out for some reasons and there are mostly money and time!
Nice!!!!🎉🎉🎉
Great tape , i own this originall tape also and got epire and jedi as well on
The first , us, uk and the dutch edition. Which is awesome and of course much better then the special edition from 1997 /8
So besides the title crawl, is anything else edited
CAn you upload the first 5 minutes pls?,
Had that on tape. But, sadly, fungus spreaded along the tape.
pause at 3:32. I have that exact same component switcher.
The number was for store to look it up it’s not a serial number
Comment
thats a library copy
Star wars should have been just left alone as just the three movie trilogy.
Star wars like this not a new hope
The second should have been called star wars: the empire strikes back
Star wars: Return of the Jedi and Luke still has a blue lightsaber witch was originally the way was done.
Also the opening words should have been blue like the ending credits the stupid yellow doesn't mach with space
But the blue does.
Pan and scan and the word nice DO NOT belong together.
Hail piracy!
I do not understand your enthusiasm for this very bad image, I understand people who come back to vinyl, because the sound is better, just for the nostalgia of the VHS format I would look at the box, but I would not watch the movie! but everyone's tastes
Well first I hope you realize that a filmed image of a TV screen doesn't accurately portray the quality of seeing it in RL. But maybe you didn't grow up with TV using rabbit ears (though truth be told that's still how I get my OTA TV!) so if you didn't grow up spoiled on HD then anything looks good! Mind you, I'm ecstatic with my new blu-ray player! But my first Star Wars home video was the Ken Films' 8mm, 15-min., B&W, silent condensed version you played on a projector in 1977. (I still have it.) It doesn't mean I like bad quality, I just appreciate everything since then since it's only been uphill! :)

I'm right there with you - I have fond memories of renting the Trilogy on VHS repeatedly as a kid, and just recently purchased the entire first release of the Star Wars Trilogy on VHS through ebay.
I can't wait to fire up the VCR and relive Star Wars as I remember it from my childhood. :D
why do you like to watch vhs tapes instead of DVD's? why don't you buy DVD's and bluray?!
