What a lovely video! As a Dominican from Santo Domingo, I always like to say that the Dominican Republic is just not beaches and coconuts. Visit the mountains, especially Jarabacoa and Constanza (maybe you can visit the pyramid in Valle Nuevo!). Also you can visit the desert in the south coast (Dunas de Bani), you can go to Samaná and look for whales (whales season is from January to March in Samana). But, if you're into the music, get to know Dominican music (listening and dancing merengue and bachata). And there's a lor more. I guess that DR has most of the things.
…..In addition, if you would like to know about history, here you can find the oldest European construction in the new world, since here was where the Spanish first settled down in America. You can start right next to you….in the town of “ La ISABELA”, and you Weill find also a beautiful beach there called “LA INCENADA”. Next step for history is, la ruina Vega vieja and capital, Santo Domingo and others places☺️ Welcome 🙏 to DR and thanks for choosing our beautiful country. now, let’s dance 💃 some bachata, merengue, son montuno, palo and much more……some Dominican phrase, “Ya tu sabe que lo que”. It means, you know what’s up 😎🙏🇩🇴!!!!
I'm glad my fellow Dominicans have touched on some of our country's cultural offerings. The DR is a melting pot that is rich in history. You are right by Sosua, a town that welcomed the Jews when so many other places shut their doors. You can visit its synagogue! Our beautiful spanish, our uplifting music, and flavorful food reflects all of these influences.
All his videos are very interesting, the truth is that a nice option to stay and live in the Dominican Republic, the climate and the places are wonderful, hug from Uruguay
In regard to Dominican Spanish,; it was the first Spanish or even European language spoken in this continent. The particular way in which it is spoken is due to the rich influence of old Spanish, Portuguese, Taino, various African languages and even Lebanese and Chinese languages. Dominican Republic is an authentic melting spot.
After coming to the Dominican Republic for 15 years mostly in cabarete and the North Coast I would have to say you guys made the right decision cabarete is definitely a hidden gem. True the town has grown in size about the last 5 years but it's amazing. If you want some tips on some off the beaten path places to check out just let me know. Nice to meet you guys and I'll probably see you around town
We are so very happy for you both! We are living here in Casa Linda for the winter months, returning home end of March to sell our Canadian home and build our villa here in Casa Linda. It’s very exciting! Playa Cabarete is pretty cool too, except for the beach vendors. Everyone needs to make a living they say! Happy life in the beautiful Dominican Republic! 🤗🏖🍻
Just starting watching your channel. Love it!!! I am from Ontario Canada and have family that live in Halifax Nova Scotia so have been there many times. Envy you so much being able to be away from the winter. Our plan in a few more years is to live 3 months in Dominican. Make sure you go to Las Terrenas. This is where we are wanting to be for the winter months. It is beautiful as well. I think we need to visit Cabarete as well at some point. I also agree with you. You really don't get to experience the culture of any country when only doing a all inclusive. We have done many of those as well but the past 5 years we have rented in Las Terrenas. Dominicans are very friendly kind people!!! Thanks for the great videos!!
I'm Dominican and I've travelled to us twice and I can tell a common citizen of the middle class on the US could live like the high class here. The dollar value a lot of times more here than in the US. With 20 dollar you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner. (of course depending the place where you are going to buy the food)
You guys are so lucky to be away from the Canadian winter this year! I’ve always wanted to spend a winter away but I have two cats and always felt it would be too difficult to plan travel with them or leave them that long. You’re right about judging places based on the all inclusive resorts. I visited the same resort you guys went to at the start of this series, I was there about 10 years ago. It was a pretty bad experience, rude staff, dirty room with bugs, inedible dried up food, it was really bad. Then we got unlucky with the weather as well, so I chopped Dominican off the travel list after that. Also was told it was too dangerous to leave the resort, by the looks of it, that was not true at all. I’ll have to re-visit the possibility of really traveling there proper! Btw, I do a little dance when I hear your opening song, I swear it’s gonna have to be in my earbuds the first time I get to travel again since covid!! Makes me giddy thinking about it!!
Good Morning. We love Cabarete! We have a home about 15 minutes outside of Cabarete. We haven’t been in almost two years due to covid but will be back for a month in February. I’m enjoying your series on the DR! I look forward to watching more. Vagamundo is my favourite breakfast spot. You have to try the breakfast bowls. Magnificent ! I think you will also enjoy the 27 waterfalls tour . They are amazing
I will be visiting DR for the first time next month. I will be staying in Cabarete so when this popped up in my feed, I got a bit excited. No resort, as I want to have the full experience. Dining and shopping, etc. Looking forward to seeing more videos of the area to get a bit more familiar with where I will be staying and visiting. Thanks!
New subscriber here, started watching your videos after this series began, love watching them, I can feel your positive vibes through the camera, people like you are always welcome in our beautiful half island, also love seeing my country from a different perspective, there are a lot of things we take for granted that should be more grateful for. Please keep these videos coming. Much love and stay safe 🇩🇴❤️✌🏼
"Bacon, maple syrup, on waffles, OMG!" Gordon says! HAHA! Great videos guys. I wanna know how many beautiful sunsets you will see over the 4 to 5 months!👍😀
@Delightful Travellers so cool, the sunsets. We have never been to the DR, were looking at Punta Cana but now you have us pondering other locations. We'll see if the DR is in the cards for next year. I will be following u guys
Welcome to my country. I'm so glad you both are enjoying your stay. Thank you for shedding a positive light on the island. Let me know if you make it to the Santo Domingo area while you're here.
I love the DR. My husband's family is from there and before the pandemic we would go regularly and especially to Cabarete. I want to explore other areas as well. Thanks for sharing about your experience moving over there.
I started following you on your channel and I love your content about daily living in the Dominican Republic God bless you and keep posting videos like these
Just found your site to watch. We have gone down to DR every year last 11 years ( except with COVID) . To return in feb😁😁😁.....So fun to watch how excited you are to be in Cabarete. Cheap to get around between Cabarete and Sosua with the local Gua Gua. Makes for a fun and cheap ride. Cheaper than uber😁.. for sure go visit the Monkey Jungle, Sosua beach, WIlsons bar ( where river meets ocean east of Cabarete), Blu lagoon, Diamanté beach, Crazy ranch restaurant , Alicia beach in Sosua....just so much to see and do. Have a wonderful time. We will keep watching you vlogs and see your excitement..🌴🏖
Hi guys, loved the livestream and this vid! You all are looking super tan! And, your Spanish is going to come A LONG way in the time you're there, totally awesome! I will be waiting for and watching every DR vid, thanks as always!
Good content as always! Looks peaceful and healthy. I was thinking it would be cool for you to dive into the baseball side of the DR for an episode. More professional Pro players come from the Dominican than anywhere outside of the U.S.. -surely there must be some incredible local baseball games unfolding across the country? Maybe not? i have no idea but it might be a cool feature down the road…cheers from Sydney. Stay safe
Great video again! My wife and I are kicking around the idea of buying a condo in the DR for a place spend the winters and hopefully allow us to pull the retirement plug a few years earlier than expected. Your videos are very informative and frankly give us hope that there is a way to get out of the rat race a little earlier than we thought!
For us (Dominicans) Cabarete Is expensive 😂 because there are many tourist so you can try other cities like mine (Nagua) cheaper than Cabarete and also so beatiful ✨I love your videos guys 😍
New subscriber here! Hope you enjoy your winter months in the DR. These months are actually a few degrees cooler here, so you're getting milder weather than normal, still pretty hot. One of our favorite holiday traditions is going to the beach on January 1st after the festivities. Make sure you try all our holiday food, it's the best.
NIce to see a video outside Sosua!!! I recommend traveling to other places as well. Go to Jarabacoa whenever you want to see other than beaches views. Enjoy DR and thanks for sharing!!!
You should go check out the Punta Rucia Lodge, amazing hotel and especially in off season is affordable. Probably the best place we’ve been. Also, there’s a fantastic restaurant on the road through the mountains from Cabarete to Santiago. It’s on your way down the mountain, gorgeous views and amazing food
I’ve had the experience you describe, namely staying at all inclusive resort in DR, and having a so-so experience. Thanks for doing the leg work and providing a more comprehensive review. I am now better informed. 👍. Cheers and stay safe guys. Dan. 😀✌️🇨🇦
2:03 did an all inclusive in Playa Dorada (called Sunscape these days?) and remember checking out the mall across the road, as well as being stunned by the well groomed grounds left and right while walking to a local casino (felt quite apprehensive at the same time🤔). When we stayed at another all inclusive resort near Samana, right by the Bridge to Nowhere (Bahia Principe Grand Cayacoa), we ventured into town. We weren’t as fearful as the first time on our own while checking out sights and stores - lots of larimar jewelry, but mostly rudimentary settings 😩. We actually enjoyed the hours outside of the all inclusive - gotta say, most locals under 35 were focused on their phones rather than their prospective customers…. My two cents: While in the Dominican, enjoy sun and surf, but also walk into a real jewelry store, look for and buy a well crafted larimar pendant 😊😍
I believe I just turned your 90K Subscriber!!! Yayyy.. I hope you guys enjoy my beautiful country, and get to know a bit of every part, dont forget SAJOMA, BARAHONA, SAMANA, LA CAPITAL, and so many other cities.. Be safe!
Hey guys, how are you? I love all your videos from my country, specially from Cabarete. Soy de Sabaneta de Yasica una comunidad que queda cerca de Cabarete, me imagino que deben de conocerla. Ahora mismo vivo en Viena, Austria y me agradan mucho sus videos. Soy un seguidor mas de ustedes. Muchos saludos.
If you ever get a chance travel to Puerto Rico. There is the big cities, but there is the mountain small towns that are beautiful. Beaches are amazing. If you go to the big cities it is expensive. There are alot of places that are affordable. Take a trip there some day. You'll like it.
This sojourn is going to remind me of all the delightful fun you had "trapped" in the Philippines. . .but, like you said, with a much easier Exit Strategy, if need be, than before. 😀 You both look like you've soaked up a fair amount of sun!
Don't forget to visit playa preciosa in Rio San Juan area its beautiful. Your less then a hour away from it the sand is golden and next to it there's another beach called playa grande where they have the most expensive hotel I know
We visited Bayahibe/Romana area last summer and it was amazing. If you haven't checked out Playa Dominicus it was beautiful. Also loved the natural swimming pool on the way to Saona Island. I would rent a private boat and chill there all day LOL. We're now planning a trip to Cabarete because my boyfriend is really into kite surfing so about to binge all of your cabarete videos!!!!! +New Subscriber :)
DR and Mexico are a lot cheaper than CR. So that was an easy choice for a longer stay. We've never properly 'took in' the DR so that's what we wanted to try out. We know we'll always go back to Mexico! 😀- Trevor
I have so many questions, but I'll narrow it down 😆 What would be your monthly expenses there? Why DR over Mexico or Costa Rica? Thank you for helping pave the way!!
We have a cost of living video coming out in the next couple weeks. In general though everything is 1/2 the cost of Canada. Costa Rica is more pricey than here and MX. We came here to the DR because we never properly explored the country 😀 - Trevor
New Sub here. Great video. I am retiring in April and thinking about hanging out there for a few months. Please do a video with nice affordable apartments
Thank you guys. My partner and I just spent a month in the DR, trying out life here. Like you we are escaping the Canadian winter and hope to make it into a lifestyle. We’re staying in Bayahibe, but visited Puerto Plata, Cabarete for a couple days. We loved it and noticed the prices in Puerto Plata are much lower than Bayahibe. Food, café, etc. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Subscribed and will be looking forward to more from you. Cheers.
Great video guys! On my first trip to the DR in February 2015, I stayed at a resort in Punta Cana that has apparently closed within the past couple of weeks. The grounds were beautiful but the food and room were very subpar. I'm glad I didn't let that stop me from returning. Just so you know, I save every restaurant you visit and recommend in Google maps for future visits. Keep up the good work!
So we met Danny Boy today. It turns out we are staying at a different Dreams, not the one in Macau. Anyway, long story short, he took us around a few places my wife wanted to go. As we were on our way to Macau Beach, I was suddenly struck with horrible pain from a kidney stone. He helped us get to medical attention. I spent seven hours in the ER but we're back at the resort now, pain free. But it was a scary time for a couple of hours.
So what special things do you need to do to stay in a country for 4-6 months? What kind of visas or whatever do you need? Are they DR based or does Canada require special papers to be filled out. Basically, I guess I'm asking what kind of extra paper work is necessary to stay that long in another country. Thanks
There's an extended visa form you can fill out online for an additional 3 months. But that didn't work for us. Every expat that lives here has told us you just pay on the way out as a tourist. They charge by the month. So there's no real 'special papers' required. - Trevor
If you’re spending the winter in Cabarete you really should get into kiteboarding. It’s a La Niña winter so the wind should be great. Unfortunately Cabarete isn’t the best place to learn the sport, but it can be done.
@@DelightfulTravellers you might check out The Body Temple on One Ocean Drive. The guys there will definitely sort your back out and start the healing process.
He my guys Next time go to samana is beautiful 😍and is cheap i was there a few weeks ago I rented a beautiful villa on Airbnb from a French lady the name on the place is apartment Cosy coco on a mountain about 4 minutes from the beach a beautiful view only 45 dollars a night I recommend it…. Sorry for any grammatical am Dominican my native language is Spanish
Guilty of doing just that in the DR simply because we never had more than a week at a time and the "word on the street" for the DR was always that it was too dangerous....the same has been said on Mexico but our last trip we had two weeks to explore and loved it so much...if we ever tire of Mexico( not sure that will happen lol) we would give the DR a try...thanks for the great info...Viv
I’m glad you have a good time in Mexico and feel safe. Not disrespect to Mexico, but here in DR, you won’t find that about carteles, guerrillas kidnapping people. I understand Mexico is a way bigger country and here in DR isn’t perfect like any other place, but at least this is still a peaceful country and has lots opportunities to make business if you can. The most dangerous and corruptly people here are the politicians, which we are working hard to get them out, even though our new president has good goals, but let’s see if he really means it😎🇩🇴🙏!!! Enjoy your staying in that beautiful country too, Mexico 🇲🇽🙏😎
Caba used to be good in the 90's early 00's, those were the glory days of the town building up, now too many people know of it and it got way more expensive. Good spot to learn how to surf, not so good for business, very slow periods. If your a wealthier person you can afford to leave and come back but, much better places to do that if finances aren't a thing. The pricing was the balance before, bad roads, hospitals, power and economy don't match. Go to Sosua or Sabaneta and see what the locals live like. Can't do business in a local town so living local makes no sense, very poverty stricken. A few tourist towns in DR, north shore being adventure/sports side of the island. The kite school game is saturated along with the surf schools and restaurants. 2 years most businesses last along the strip. Good place to visit, good place to leave too lol

Wow you two are tanned! That waffle looks amazing! Look forward to next video, stay safe.
Thanks! Tans are slowly coming on indeed... and oh that waffle! Yum - Trevor
If you ever get a chance travel to Puerto Rico. There is the big cities, but there is the mountain small towns that are beautiful. Beaches are amazing. If you go to the big cities it is expensive. There are alot of places that are affordable. Take a trip there some day. You'll like it.
We’ve been there and have videos on PR on the channel 😀 - Anna
@@DelightfulTravellers iI guess I didn't see that video sorry. The Dominican Republic looks amazing. Hsve a great winter stay.
This sojourn is going to remind me of all the delightful fun you had "trapped" in the Philippines. . .but, like you said, with a much easier Exit Strategy, if need be, than before. 😀 You both look like you've soaked up a fair amount of sun!
Great video... thanks.

I’m glad to see you finally escaped to warmth and sunshine. Are you planning any day trips to explore Haiti?
Thanks.. we will not be going to Haiti given the state of the Gov there. It doesn't seem safe - Anna
Very nice video. Thanks for the info. Take care.
Thanks for watching! - Trevor
That breakfast looks incredible. Its such a bargain for the quality and portions.
Love it! ☀️🌴🌊

Thank you for sharing your experience! Why did you pick DR over Mexico or Costa Rica? (Also known to be DN locations)
Bienvenido a República Dominicana tiene que visitar tanta playas a samana. Miches.bahia de las águilas y muchas más
Try the Campesino bfast at Stevens Alicia Beach, Sosua.
Excelente.RD. desde NYC.
New Sub here. Great video. I am retiring in April and thinking about hanging out there for a few months. Please do a video with nice affordable apartments
Thank you .... I like beer also lol hugs
Cheers.
Have you stopped at Cabrera? Check out Casa Lambi or Apartmento Carey on Airbnb.
Not yet! We'll look those places up
Great video guys!
Andy that's so cool you save the restaurants on Google Maps. We'd luv to know what you think of some of them once you visit 😀- Trevor
- Trevor
How do you compare the Cabarete or Sosua areas with Punta Cana communities?
Looks lovely and relaxing and 30 C weather, what more do you need.
A mojito! 😅Just kidding... everyday is beautiful here though - Anna
If you’re spending the winter in Cabarete you really should get into kiteboarding. It’s a La Niña winter so the wind should be great. Unfortunately Cabarete isn’t the best place to learn the sport, but it can be done.
I've been thinking about it but... my lower back isn't the best (from time to time) so I'd be worried I'd mess it up - Trevor
We haven't found it dangerous here at all... same with MX of course. We think you'd both luv it here in the DR 🤗- Anna
Yea
About the weather do you mean that in town it's always uncomfortably humid all year because there's no breezes like there is right at the beach???
Have you done a tour of your apartment yet? I'd love to see it.
That video is coming this Sunday! Editing it now 😀- Trevor
What is the cost of living of the Dominican Republic as compared to Malaysia?
❤️
