  • I came upon a child of god
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, where are you going
    And this he told me
Im going on down to yasgurs farm
Im going to join in a rock n roll band
Im going to camp out on the land
Im going to try an get my soul free
    We are stardust
    We are golden
And weve got to get ourselves
    Back to the garden

Joni Mitchell wrote one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs that epitomizes the whole feeling of that generation ~ and it still continues. Thanks for this great post!

One of the great lines that I never hear commented on: "We are stardust.
Billion year old carbon" has got to be the most scientifically literate line I've ever heard from a musician - not to mention mind-blowingly profound, and the literal truth. In my top 10 songs of all time. Best female song writer ever. Love you Joni!

I'm 78 - a military vet and been through this generation - 60s and 70s of hell. But, Joni Mitchell is one of the very, very, very , very few of the singers of that time that I still enjoy. I don't know what it was about her that garnered so much respect. But even today, she stands out. She beat them all. Just love to sit back and listen to her music. She had a message of hope in her lyrics.

They never called themselves that, it was a pejorative given as they were anti-war, and yes you're right, she was well aware at the time that that scene was dying. This song is about hope and the feelings that the young had at that time and it ended up as its swan song

Listening to this on Ash Wednesday and hearing “We are stardust,

on the scene a long time ago...i am sitting here, have places to go
but i can't get up, simply mesmerizing, unbelievable, beautiful,
saw joni at mann music center in philly back in 1980-1....

All of her music is so amazing it's difficult to choose a favorite. That said, this song really says a lot about life, the universe and what was going on at that time and in many ways, still is. Brings chills up my spine. Joni Mitchell is one of the most talented musicians I've ever known of. Her music, poetry, artwork/album covers, and all of the instruments she plays. The things she does with her voice. She is unparalleled.

My high school English teacher used to make us "study" Joni Mitchell but I didn't realize the depth of this song. We were given light, air, the earth and all of its plants and animals but the season of our discontent was that we realized we had no shirt, no shoes, no house, no bank account, no king.... Our diets now are hardly recognizable as food they are so full of additives, preservatives and artificials. Our water is full of contaminants. We need to get back to the garden, each 1 of us.

Her words are pure and chaste, but she is a real genius in several ways. She just hints at things, like a good story teller should, which is why I think I find her to be so precious. Can you imagine Joni ever telling you something that she didn't think was absolutely true? I can hardly imagine that scenario, as how could you argue with a girl that was arguably a genius, because she discovered that the double-decker buses in England should really have a driver on the top!

Its puts chills down my spine to hear this song. Joni sings about stardust and carbon like she's a scientist. James' version was good. Crosby, Stills, Nash, version was alright. Joni does her songs like no one else. Didn't she write this before Carl Sagan's Cosmos originally aired. I think Carl Sagan borrowed her words to say "We are star stuff". Her music probably inspired Carl. How incredible is that, music inspires science, and science inspires music.
