Gentle giants of the Cambrian

  • More than 500 million years ago in the Cambrian period there was an explosion of animal life. The top predators were from a group called the Anomalocarids, the largest animals of their day. But now, a new fossil suggests that not all the Anomalocarids were the fearsome killing machines scientists once thought. At least one, it seems, evolved into a gentle giant.

    My only issue with this video is it isn't long enough, it left me with a feeling of wanting to know more. Why do they do these sort of things to us? Anyone who enjoys paleontology has got to love the Cambrian even with the very little we do know.

  • @Timurlane100
    @Timurlane100 9 років тому +79

    Considering that Anomalocaris was thought to be two separate creatures until 1981 and that there has been a considerable amount of error in the assessment of past Cambrian era fossils (Hallucigenia, for example), I wonder how precarious this filter-feeder theory might be. I wonder how many of these fossil specimens have been found. Don't misunderstand. The idea sounds intriguing and may be totally correct, but I just wonder about the volume and clarity of the evidence.

      +Shawn Brown - Wow. Two words that do nothing to answer the question.
      Again, as initially stated 2 years ago, until 1981, "fossil evidence" held that Anomalocaris was two separate creatures. My opinion remains unchanged: although this notion is intriguing and may be totally correct, I still wonder about the volume and clarity of the evidence.

    • @Varunic219
      @Varunic219 6 років тому +4

      Timurlane100 I agree. You bring up a valid point that deserves more than a subversive and unintellectual "fossil evidence"comment. I'm afraid it's hard to say what was for sure and forever will be. I'm inclined to suspend my disbelief at times like this and let my opinion make the final call on what I choose to believe. Maybe these filter feeders were indeed king back then. Just maybe.

    Cambrian lifeforms are one of my obsessions. They look so alien and non-conforming to our mental picture of our current water inhabitants. It makes me wonder just how evolution went on to create these creatures and why it didn't try again to make almost all of them.
    It's a shame we can just scratch the surface of their living conditions and habits. It would be priceless if by some means we could replicate them and observe their behavior in the flesh, rather than speculate.

    This was interesting, although it would've been cool to at least compare the mouth parts to a full specimen (or mash-up) to visually explain "what goes where, how and why." There've got to be enough fossils to puzzle an example together. Otherwise, still cool.
    ...but, as this is a science video, and so fact checking should be on point...
    Filter Feeder: Whale.It uses baleen and tongue to push water through "filter" leaving food in the mouth to swallow.
    Suspension Feeder: Clam. It siphons in water and catches particles that land on a surface where cilia and/or mucus carries it through the digestive tract.
    FF = Passive acquisition (neg. pressure in mouth), Active processing (pushing mixed water through baleen with tongue)
    SF = Active Acquisition (constant in/out siphon activity), Active processing (cilia brushing nutrient towing mucus)
    NOT the same thing. The lady speaking for a scientific discovery needs a refresher.

I know fluid dynamics is complicated, but is it so hard to just look up images of sea animals in motion and replicate that in the animations? God. 0:45 is a great example of this failure.

    It would be nice if they would tell us how big it actually was. I've looked at a couple articles about this creature today, and they all use words like "giant" or "huge", but they don't say how big. I'm certain it was nowhere near as big as a whale -- nothing back then was especially big by today's standards -- and in fact it was probably only a couple of feet long. But five feet or 20 feet? It would be nice to know.

      The articule mentions 120 mm long for their appendages and that they don't know the total body length. Anomalocaris size was between 60cm to 1 meter long
