The treads on the tyres are filled with water and have no purchase to the road surface, so the driver loses control when driving at speeds not suited to the conditions, very dangerous to all road users in the vicinity. Hello from Nordrhein Westphalia (where all the images are from) , everyone. Thanks for the warm wishes, situation is already improving, army's out as well on SAR operations and debris clearing. Rescuers are still doing their best and some of the lost lives are on their side unfortunately, while trying to save people. As mentioned, situation is already improving, got power back here in Stolberg a few hours ago,though there are still areas without power and some without drinking water as well. This region usually sees a lot of rain (probably the most in Germany) but it's usually constant over time and there are plans in case of flooding everywhere(floods rarely happen, and even more rare on such a scale). It happened that there was sudden super heavy rainfall on an already water saturated soil, which led to this. It happens unfortunately and it will happen more and more, hope lessons will be learned by those not experiencing it so that they are prepared when it happens in their area. Greetings from Rheinbach NRW, we also just got power and communications back, two villages in Swisttal are still not fully accounted for as all communication had collapsed and only visible people were able to be evacuated. Currently we are still apprehensive about the Steinbachtalsperre collapsing though while still in critical condition the situation seems to be back under control for the moment and an army of help and rescue teams from all over the country has just arrived here some hours ago. We usually don't see any rain here due to being situated between the Eifel mountainrange and Rhineplateau so we were not prepared at all for such an event. The Sirens are still going off constantly and people are still unaccounted for, though now that at least most of us have been reconnected to electricity and communication grid some hint of normality is starting to come back to those of us lucky enough to still have a house to stay in. It's kind of a trade-off though. Valleys can be wonderful places to live under other circumstances. Mountaintops get cold and plains are often heavily deforested and have wind-related disasters like tornados. Valleys tend to protect wildlife, trees, and rivers, not to mention they guard against external weather events. Of course, it's at the risk of things like floods and landslides.

There have been reports here in Germany that farms take in animals from other farms. There were pictures of frightened horses, dogs and cats rescued by civil protection in search of surviving people. These people do a lot and have often been on the job for 48 hours. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to save everyone

Only two weeks ago, we had heavy crazy rain fall ( one month volume rain fall in one day !) landslide in Japan . But this looks far worse. Hope the rescue workers would find many of those missing people.
German citizen here....the south and west of the state North-Rhine-Westphalia (the densest populated area in Germany ), the area of the Eifel as well as the Ahr (Altenahr 18 deaths) in the federal state Rhine Landpfalz as well as Cologne and area were hit extremely badly. The connecting rivers in the Eifel lead to floods in Belgium/German border especially Eupen, Liege, Luettich etc. I am not sure about Luxemburg but it is also connected via rivers, too. In the east of North Rhine Westphalia the cities like Altenar/Unna were severely hit, several deaths also 2 firefighters. The city of Hagen and the area around it was so badly destroyed that only vehicles from the army can access it. In general many villages and rural parts are not yet accessible, the electricity is down, mobile phones do not work, gas pipes open, bridges and roads gone. Count of livestock, horses etc unknown (and many have horses in the rural areas and ranches) some people asking for drones via FB in order to see if their animals still live The rain bringing weather will now turn south near the Swiss border and hit Munich, Bavaria meaning the river Rhine might get more water and it already flooded parts of Cologne on its way up to the Netherlands and into the North Sea , so this is not yet over at all. Fingers crossed that no more victims and damages are ahead of us. 🙏🏼

🏴Reminds me of the same flooding in Gloucestershire a few years ago and the West Country and a wet stormy July that flattened the cereal crops and rotted potatoes in the fields and the Cumbrian floods and the October super Gale that was famously not forecast and the 1952 North Sea flooding and the 1947 great freeze that lasted over a month when crops were frozen into the soil . These events are well noted going back centuries in these isles, they have all been devastating with this one no less so. Lessons will be learned hopefully and measures put in place to help prevent a recurrence.

Only two weeks ago, we had heavy crazy rain fall ( one month volume rain fall in one day !) landslide in Japan . But this looks far worse. Hope the rescue workers would find many of those missing people.

German citizen here....the south and west of the state North-Rhine-Westphalia (the densest populated area in Germany ), the area of the Eifel as well as the Ahr (Altenahr 18 deaths) in the federal state Rhine Landpfalz as well as Cologne and area were hit extremely badly. The connecting rivers in the Eifel lead to floods in Belgium/German border especially Eupen, Liege, Luettich etc. I am not sure about Luxemburg but it is also connected via rivers, too. In the east of North Rhine Westphalia the cities like Altenar/Unna were severely hit, several deaths also 2 firefighters.
The city of Hagen and the area around it was so badly destroyed that only vehicles from the army can access it. In general many villages and rural parts are not yet accessible, the electricity is down, mobile phones do not work, gas pipes open, bridges and roads gone. Count of livestock, horses etc unknown (and many have horses in the rural areas and ranches) some people asking for drones via FB in order to see if their animals still live
The rain bringing weather will now turn south near the Swiss border and hit Munich, Bavaria meaning the river Rhine might get more water and it already flooded parts of Cologne on its way up to the Netherlands and into the North Sea , so this is not yet over at all.
Fingers crossed that no more victims and damages are ahead of us. 🙏🏼
A small village called Schuld in Rhineland Palatinate is particularly affected.

🏴Reminds me of the same flooding in Gloucestershire a few years ago and the West Country and a wet stormy July that flattened the cereal crops and rotted potatoes in the fields and the Cumbrian floods and the October super Gale that was famously not forecast and the 1952 North Sea flooding and the 1947 great freeze that lasted over a month when crops were frozen into the soil . These events are well noted going back centuries in these isles, they have all been devastating with this one no less so. Lessons will be learned hopefully and measures put in place to help prevent a recurrence.
