The Solutrean culture, dating from approximately 22,000 to 17,000 years ago, was a prehistoric culture of the Upper Paleolithic period primarily located in what is now France and Spain. It is renowned for its distinctive and finely crafted stone tools, particularly the unique, bifacially flaked Solutrean points. The Solutreans are also noted for their artistic achievements, including detailed cave paintings and intricate carvings. This culture is significant for its advanced lithic technology and its influence on subsequent Paleolithic societies in Europe.

Next: Thank you so much, @NORTH02, for making this amazing series!
As someone who has tried to read up on these topics on my own, I understand that you must have put an immense effort into making these videos. I greatly appreciate your effort of collecting and collating so much information into these extremely informative videos. Not only that, but also your great work in turning these “material complexes” into relatable groups of people with ideas, cultures and ways of living.
Again, huge thanks for your hard work!

Honestly, there's no other channel like this one. I hear people point it out all the time so this is by no means a new observation, but I can't overstate the impact of just having a regular voice calmly delivering the information , without any other BS. Other channels either have unnecessarily loud music, a "UA-camr voice" trying way too hard to sound like a stereotypical narrator, etc. This channel is singlehandedly responsible for my deep interest and knowledge on this topic. THANK YOU, MR. NORTH

If Paleoindians survived above the artic circle,
Solutreans could have crossed the Atlantic fishing off the edge of the ice.
I'm not sold on the progression from Solutrean points to Clovis, however I believe there is evidence on East coast that shows they predated the Clovis folks.
They just did not thrive there, possibly wiped out by Yellowstone volcano.

I think we are giving disproportionate attention to cave dwelling. Caves are simply one of the places where artifacts are best preserved. We wrongly assume from this, that caves were the primary place of residence for these peoples. In reality, they probably lived in shelters besides caves that have not survived as artifacts.

    • @goss1961

We can only really argue from the evidences that exist, not from lacks of evidence. Obviously, if the people migrated from cave-camp to cave-camp and the cave-camps were more than one day’s walk from each other, they must have spent some time utilizing some other form of shelter. But until some evidence of such a non-cave campsite is established, it’s only a logical conjecture, not a scientific fact. No matter how blatantly obvious it may be.

I wonder if those oversized points were teaching examples. The most experienced napper in the tribe surrounded by all the children, like a classroom, making an example that's big enough so they can all see it take shape and see the technique all at once while they follow along. The symbolic burial could even still make sense in this context as a tribute to the nappers' greatness as teachers.

Love the inclusion of the actual knapping demonstration. It helps a lot seeing the process with a description of specific flaking techniques like overshot flaking etc. I’ve dabbled in knapping random chert I’ve found just to see how it breaks.
I’ve got my own small collection of points and tools I’ve found over the years. No words can describe the feeling of holding something thousands of years old, pondering who made it, how they made it, for what purpose, and how it ended up right where I am standing all these thousands of years later. Oh what stories they could tell if they could speak.

As part Inuit I can't help thinking that those lost coastal regions of the Solutrians would likely be full of mittens with sea mammals like seals, and possibly whales, sea birds, fish and shellfish. They seemed very industrious and resourceful, but of course that remains speculative.

As a little bonus fact - my father is Danish (very, very much from Lolland, with besides some Swedish admixture, dating his family back to the late 1500s, and by then already very local and established) At his highest he stood 1.72 m - very slenderly built.
My mother from mixed (mainly Greenlandic Inuit) descent, with quite a bit of very sturdy Danish and North German admixture. At her tallest, she stood 1.50 m, with a slightly more rounded torso, but very delicate limbs.
If you look at my picture, I look quite a lot like my mother, but despite my colours, my physical build is very much my father - genetics are odd! I stood 1.695 at my tallest. Unlike my father who was able to grow a full beard, the stubble I have in the picture is my fullest extent of beard - so an actual beard never was an option for me 😂

What I suspect is that whoever made these Solutrean points was simply devoting all his time to mastering his/her skill, basically it was his job, unlike modern flintknapers who, most likely, invest their time in various other activities such as family duties, probably a daytime job, etc.
Being a full-time flintknaper was indeed a job back in time.

Well, I'm sure that just like modern humans, there were better flint nappers, better hunters, better sewers, as well as medical people, spiritual leaders, etc. But unlike today, ultra-specialization wasn't likely a 'thing'. These skills were learned literally from childhood on, so 'everyone' knew how to do it, but some were more proficient than others. But I doubt there were 'professions' in the sense we use the word.

She used a lot of the available research for her books. I was impressed with her accuracy, by 1980s standards. I disagreed about Neanderthal speech and science now has shown that they were capable of speech.

First class videos, period! Thanks for producing these, amazing info. Regarding their tools, everything we've seen shows them to be almost a carbon copy of the paleo-natives of the Texas panhandle, great southern plains of 12,000-15,000 years. Their stone blades/tools are identical...how can that be?! We are so blown away by what you've "learned us". No venus figurines here, though. Cheers👍

My dad's side of the family does a lot of napping, though they prefer to machine cut slabs and grind off 45 degree angles to easily get extremely fine results. My uncle invented this larger tool where he just caps elk antlers with the bits of copper/stone, similar to the boppers you're using but with almost an entire antler as the handle sorta like a crutch. But the way he's cut the elk antler lets him use his legs and body weight to nap with essentially no effort at all, only using your hand to guide the tool, and of course your leg strength can nap much longer flakes.
Not saying the natives did the same, but it wouldn't have taken anything more than them being able to cut antler to make the same tool.

I think your overdue for another video or two on hunting.
How native americans hunted bison is worth its own video i think. From the ancestors of the clovis and folsom, the bison runs, and the introduction of modern horses which shook up plains politics (mainly the rise of the comanche and the establishment of consncheria)
I also remember an exhibit in.....cody or jackson hole wyoming of the shawnee chasing a ram up a ramp that led into a tiny pen

North, I really enjoy watching your videos. I wish i had known back in college that ancient human studies was my calling and true interest in life.
Can you help me with my notes and provide a chronological order of cultures? For example, cultures like: Aurignacion, Gravettian, Solutrean, Bell Beaker, Corded Ware, Yamnaya, AND different ages/periods, for example Stone Age, Copper Age, ect..
I would be so happy to learn and receive a response from you. In 15 years of UA-cam usage, you are the first and only created that I've contacted with comments or questions.
Thank you for your excellent ancient human education and videos!
    Sincerely,
    Charles Nelson

Laurelleaf (is that how its spelled?) This was a lovely video! I especially appreciate how you gave the bulk to the main topic, while still respectfully showing the Solutrean Hypothesis. Personally, as someone who admittedly knows very little about flint knapping, I feel like there's only so many ways to knap a stone into a tool, and similarities across such vast distances and times are more likely to be two peoples stumbling upon the same or similar methods.

If the Solutrean stone knives and spearpoint are being found in stockpiles, in combination with their high quallity shape and difficulty level of making, I wonder if they where used as a kind of treasure/financial trove instead of a common day tool. I have the impression that a 25 cm long and 1 cm thick blade will be easily break during battle or hunting. Which would be a pitty.
But also, they are just beautifull, and as they are found in erea's with a dense population for those days.
