Marie Severin was so vastly overlooked. I loved even her work on Sub-Mariner where she’d come in and fill in all the gaps when books were running late and she’d of course turn out the best stuff. And her coloring was epic level.
She's so lovely. I love her on Not Brand Echh, I always thought those were so funny.
It's amazing how underrated she is. Her work on Kull alone should put her in the pantheon of greats.
Her Hulk and Dr Strange is amazing and underrated ❤️🔥
What a great lady and great artist. Thanks for posting.
One of the most delightful and talented people in the history of the medium. I wish there were hours more of Marie talking about her EC and Marvel days. The fact that she says she "had a crush" on Graham Ingels, Joe Maneely and Johnny Craig is a funny revelation. The Craig crush is least surprising because he was a goodlooking guy and Marie called him "Mr. 5th Avenue" in another interview because she said he was always wearing snazzy suits.
WE MISS YOU, MARIE! I feel blessed to have met you and buy a commission (and a photo w/you) back in San Diego in 1998!
Boy do I miss her. I loved her comment about these guys who can't draw women properly.
I met her once at the Marvel bullpen, thanks to David Anthony Kraft. She seemed like a breath of fresh air, and a lot of fun.
I always wanted to meet her. I loved her work. I loved her brother's work. RIP and thanks for the great work and memories. Stuff I still have. Her Dr. Strange stuff ... I think she followed Ditko.
Priceless.
I met her at San Diego con in 1998. Beautiful person. She was doing commissions so I paid for one and it's a cherished memory
Good stuff! Wish it were longer. She penciled close to 200 comics for Marvel alone.
I remember The Incredible Hulk Annual #1. The awesome Jim Steranko cover that got me to buy that issue. And the wonderful Marie Severin interior art.
Marie was a real hoot, and seemed to be a great deal of fun to work with and have around. The amount of cartoons she'd draw and pin up in the bullpen about the people she worked with (Herb Trimpe for example) must have made the place a lot of fun to work in. I think she was greatly under appreciated by many who didn't realise just how much she offered and contributed. I loved her Not Brand Echh work.
Awww. That was waaay too short an interview. But fun all the same! thank you!
Thanks for posting this. She deserves a lot more credit than she gets. Very interesting points throughout. I haven't heard from anything else on the resentment she felt for the code wiping out the livelihood of vets. Very interesting on how she got her break and her thoughts on Stan who the revisionists are constantly trying to make seem like he had nothing to do with Marvel's success.
What a lovely woman. Makes me love my muppet babies page that much more
R.I.P. Marie Severin. Along with Lily Renee and Ramona Fradon, she was truly one of the first female comic book artists in a largely male-dominated medium.
marie ( the she) severin .looooove drawing of the hulk, sufer. and subby.
😎Marie , Ramona are without question two of the best remembered artists in my collection of favorite books. I would loved to have seen a Marie Severin comic strip ; I enjoyed Ramona's run on Brenda Starr even though she didn't have a real interest in it. Too bad these kind of interviews weren't done years ago I would have gone binge crazy seeing comic strip creators and their ghost artist /writers talking about their involvement with syndicated features, and not just the male entertainers but favorite ladies of mine like Marty Links (Bobby Sox / Emmy Lou) , Nadine Seltzer (Sweetie Pie , girly Dennis The Menace) , Dale Messick (Brenda Starr) and one of the truly unsung greats IMO Edwina Dumm (Cap Stubbs and Tippie ; one of the bestest of the boy and his dog themes).
The Hulk artist 😎
This is the one and only lady in comics besides Janet Kahn and Wendy penni. That got my attention 😛👍♥️
😃👍
I just bought a hardcover trade collecting a few issues of the hulk like issues 101 to 105 and the annual and which she draws then her name turns up in my UA-cam feed.
4:04 "I think Stan knew how to use people." Marie didn't mean anything by that comment I'm sure, but that having been said, we have Jack Kirby's story.
Given the amount of positive comments from pretty much everyone else with respect to Stan in interviews like this (see Romitas interview for example), as well as a great many books that interviewed people who worked with Stan, we can take a lot of Jacks 'story' with a pinch of salt.
Kirby's gripes were really with Marvel which was the publisher. Stan was just the editor but the resentment rubbed off on Stan. In fact he offered Jack to stop being a freelancer and to be the art director while he remains the editor but Jack turned it down.
@@anthonygarcia8749, really?
Do you know what Jack Kirby's new contract at Marvel was? You know, what rate of pay for instance?
