To be honest, as unrealistic as it is, I would love to see the scene completely animated and placed on the 20th Anniversary DVD or something. I will say though: The choice to cut the song was, in my opinion, the right choice. Not only does the story flow better, but makes the Hobo a far more mysterious character. I think keeping his origins vague makes him a far more interesting character.
Makes the scene of the girl saying she was sure and the boy saying together when stopping the train more impactful. Plus, makes the conflict of believing more concrete and gives steamer and Smokey a reason to exist and transitions into the next scene with them at the light better. But I didn’t think the song fit.

I have to admit, I like the backstory of the hobo. It adds a bit more lore to the Polar Ex. Like these guys see the hobo as a ghost, yet the Polar Express is not entirely of this world. These two aren't technically human, but get freaked out by what they see as a ghost. Like something can be mysterious to them. I find that really interesting.
Interesting aspect about this. While it didn't make it into the movie, the train starting to overheat and potentially blow up, actually made it into the video game of all things. You have to help fix the engine, and get it back up to speed again.
That song was cute but it definitely didn’t fit with the rest of the movie. I also really like they way they only talk in unison, that’s really cool. Now you may be asking, “what does this half to do with the ghost in the movie?” Keep in mind, when he died on flat top tunnel he slipped and fell on the coach. And the conductor mentions that on his first day he slipped and didn’t fall off, perhaps that ghost pulled him up just like he does later when the main character about falls off 1225 aka the polar express. The reason I bring this up is because if you believe in stories of ghosts on trains then the reason they shut the windows on the coach is to protect the people inside the coach, so the ghost in the movie pulls people who almost fall off back up. This would also explain why he tales the main character to the engine, because if he doesn’t the main character would have also suffered the same fate on flat top tunnel. Think about that…

Over the years the Hobo (or King, rather) has become the embodiment of the eerie vibe of the Polar Express to me, what holds all of that "off" feeling together, and the fact that they added a paranormal aspect to the movie in the first place - something that wasn't a part of the original story at all - makes me way more endeared to the movie and captivated by the (literal) haunting atmosphere of The Polar Express; the Hobo feels both like an integral part of the Polar Express story (in being a metaphor for not believing - which is kind of fucked up, or being a metaphor for the Holy Spirit/Guardian Angels, and for adding the mysticism of Christmas by being a ghost in general), but he also feels separate from it all (as in, he was a severely poor man who jumped onto a train, because that's what he needed to do to get around, but then he got killed by an oncoming tunnel and now literally haunts the train, helping kids not suffer from the same fate when they somehow get on top of the roof). Also the animation of his death was really cool. It's just, when you watch the movie, there's something dark there - something that you can barely scratch the surface of, especially if you have no deleted scenes context or knowledge, and it itches at you in a wrong way in the most positive way possible, because somehow you also relate to it. It adds that dark part, a "reality" of sorts, that some other Christmas stories don't have, but quite a few that do which snags my attention more than other standard holiday stories (well, Christmas stories have always been kind of dark, but there's a quite a few without the existential realities of life (like the greed of man, the severities of being poor, or the concept of death) thrown in).
Well, it was 2009 so the way they make 3D animation on a base level is way different today than it was then. It would probably be easier to start from scratch than try to use this base animation to make anything, unfortunately. It’s still cool to think about would it would look like as a finished animation tho🤔☺️
This is incredible, thank you so much for showing us this! This clears up so much of the ambiguity in the film over who the homeless fella was and why he was there. The movie probably did flow better without this scene but my god does it lend some heart and context. I loved this.
An awesome detail about this scene is that at 3:19, 3:24, and 4:09, you can see an, albeit unfinished, rendering of the flux capacitor from Back to the Future above the three dials in the upper left corner of the control hub!!!
I think it would've been cool, if this scene was fully finished. I bet it would've looked pretty neat, as well as for when Smokey & Steamer tell the story of the Hobo. Well...except for this: 3:30
This is such a good movie. One year ago I made a bit of an analysis on the hobo, and even thought he song is good, what interests me the most is the secret story about the hobo. A fan recommended this video to me recently, and its always fun to look at these behind the scenes videos.
The guy who played Smokey & Steamer (Michael Jeter, who passed away in Mar 2003 during the making of the film) is the actor who played "Mr. Noodle's brother, Mr. Noodle" on "Elmo's World". He is also the bad guy in "Air Bud", and got eaten by a velociraptor in "Jurassic Park III". Very talented man that we lost way too soon (he was only 50). A lot of kids who watched him as Mr Noodle would not be born for years after he passed, due to them rerunning all his segments for years afterwards. (the original Mr Noodle is still alive; Jeter was "Mr Noodle's brother, Mr Noodle")
Although the backstory to the hobo is interesting. I'm glad it wasn't in the film. He would've just been a ghost and not a visual representation of the Hero Boy's doubt. I do wish Smokey and Streamer got more screen time as displayed in this deleted scene. We get to see more of their characters. And how they are good additives to the story line and and give the "Teamwork" message volume. In the final cut, they appear annoying and clumsy. But here, they remind me of Timon and Pumba.
I saw this a few years ago and have been looking for it… too bad this scene wasn’t in the Final Cut of the movie! The hobo’s backstory was interesting!

I was just about to search this up, but I guess UA-cam read my mind and suggested this video to me.
This movie is so good it makes me want to cry this movie is good 100% best Christmas movie yet I like that since I was three years old
I love how at 4:03, Smokey's head just clips through the cab roof while he's jumping in the air lol
3:30 If they had put that scene in the movie it would have been my favorite part.
Mine 2
Would have been my least favorite
Its a shame none of this appeared in the film, it would fill in so many gaps in the film!
I really would like it if this had been fully animated, Steamer was always my favorite character in the movie, but I'd never known his name until now.
Okay, I’ve got a serious question if this is still on a computer somewhere, could it still be finished?
I Hope So
If the Mocap files still exist the 3D model of the train and people could be recreated.
@@drabberfrog U Could B Right
Well, it was 2009 so the way they make 3D animation on a base level is way different today than it was then. It would probably be easier to start from scratch than try to use this base animation to make anything, unfortunately. It’s still cool to think about would it would look like as a finished animation tho🤔☺️
@@nola- Yeah
The movements, the lifeless faces.... It's truly something else...
I’m really glad they cut this from the movie.
This is incredible, thank you so much for showing us this! This clears up so much of the ambiguity in the film over who the homeless fella was and why he was there. The movie probably did flow better without this scene but my god does it lend some heart and context. I loved this.
Producer: "thank god that was deleted forever."
The Internet: "hahahahaha... YOU FOOL!"
Man we really need someone to animate this scene. I understand why it wasn't in the film but man it explains so much
An awesome detail about this scene is that at 3:19, 3:24, and 4:09, you can see an, albeit unfinished, rendering of the flux capacitor from Back to the Future above the three dials in the upper left corner of the control hub!!!
4:07 4:08 I think
4:08. I love the locomotive chugging sound
Glad they kept this out. I love how mysterious the hobo is
This movie is a lot more terrifying when it’s not finished
This was disturbing-ly funny, but I'm kinda glad this was taken out.😅😬
Bless their hearts for doing this, but I'm glad this wasn't in the film...
His beard is just flying EVERYWHERE. 🤣
I think it would've been cool, if this scene was fully finished. I bet it would've looked pretty neat, as well as for when Smokey & Steamer tell the story of the Hobo.
Well...except for this: 3:30
My Thoughts Exactly.
I am so glad the fart joke didn't make it into the movie.
"the animation was never fully completed"
you could've fooled me because this nightmare fuel is how i remember the finished movie
I can't think of a worst way to be remembered. I love this.
What
This is such a good movie. One year ago I made a bit of an analysis on the hobo, and even thought he song is good, what interests me the most is the secret story about the hobo. A fan recommended this video to me recently, and its always fun to look at these behind the scenes videos.
4:40 this part is horrifying
Press F to payt Respect To Michael Jeter. He also Played Mr. noodles brother Mr. noodle in Elmo's world.
F
@@camillasantaana9694 that was one of the few times I cried. I grew up watching that movie

The Colorado Railroad Museum includes the "Together" song each year as part of THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride experience!
still one of the coolest scenes at our event!
2:23 me after an assignment graded notification pops up for an assignment I didn't even know existed
😭why so the clip so funny tho
1:20 When The Hero Boy Found The Hero Girl In The Cab. Where’s The Conductor
Have you seen this movie?
And how does he get in there in the first place?
@@elitheyoutubeguyI think he's talking about later in the movie
Soemthing I’ve always wondered why do they go to the back to get to the front by going o too the trains instead of yk walking through the cars
i hope they properly animate this as a DVD bonus or something for a remaster anniversary
Me 2.
4:07 two heads are better than one
im so glad this was cut
It's obvious why they didn't finish this because it was disturbing to see how he was scratching his 3rd leg 3:22
this is beautiful and cursed at the same time
Holy crap! Polar Express has been one of my favorite Christmas movies and, just NOW i'm finding out about this scene
This is what my sleep paralysis demons look like
Train: suffering a meltdowm
Those characters: ok is dance time.
It’s interesting to see but I think they made the right decision, the releases version is just perfect
THIS EXPLAINS SO MUCH MORE ABOUT THE KING OF THE NORTH POLE WHAT!!!!
Those unfinished models are nightmare fuel tho
I will love a part 2 of the movie to understand more about all the polar express crew , hobo and the engine/train history.
Thank god this was taken out lol.
This segment has a totally different feel than the rest of the movie. So glad it was cut.
The song is so great! I wish they kept it in the final cut
Pathetic comment, please delete it
I used to watch this all the time as a young kid I watched it every day
I like this deleted scene is Train cabin story of hobo from The Polar Express.
Me 2.
That little belly touch they awkwardly pause for gets me every time i rewatched
Although the backstory to the hobo is interesting. I'm glad it wasn't in the film. He would've just been a ghost and not a visual representation of the Hero Boy's doubt.
I do wish Smokey and Streamer got more screen time as displayed in this deleted scene. We get to see more of their characters. And how they are good additives to the story line and and give the "Teamwork" message volume. In the final cut, they appear annoying and clumsy. But here, they remind me of Timon and Pumba.
The un rendered (I think) Smokey is so creepy
I am puzzled as to why they would remove this scene, it explains so much about the movie.
Yeah I’m asking the same question
For pacing apparently.
It sort of adds to the mystery
Rest in peace Michael Jeter
4:03 Lmao their reactions
"You want.... their heads to go.... together?"
"YES TOGETHER!"
-real reason this never saw the light of day
I saw this a few years ago and have been looking for it… too bad this scene wasn’t in the Final Cut of the movie! The hobo’s backstory was interesting!
4:40, remove the song, but KEEP THIS. god i LOVE it
