For someone like me 55 and just picking the guitar up you are absolutely the best teacher on UA-cam that I have found. Please keep doing what you are doing. Because you are helping a lot of people. If I lived near you I would definitely be asking you for in person lessons. Cheers to you. This was a great lesson.
I wrote acapella for about 25 years, began guitar in my 50's , then in the swing of things, had no time or energy to play from my wife battling and loosing to cancer, then 2 years after, I'm nearly crushed to death in a 70 thousand pound mixer roll over up side down, now 11 months after all that, still in a Lot of pain, I stumble upon your youtube stuff. You have been a huge blessing in helping me get my mojo back, thanks so much
I appreciate that, Maurice! You could write a lot of songs with your life story. Don't forget to subscribe to my channel. Please become a member of my guitar lesson website www.song-bike.com and access lots of videos NOT available on UA-cam. Please check it out !!
I really appreciate that @janehanser2099! If you're interested I have a FREE Blues Guide PDF & video available at my website www.song-bike.com. And I do a UA-cam guitar Q&A livestream Saturdays at 5pm ET - check it out ! (here is the playlist of dozens of past livestreams: ua-cam.com/play/PLDv6rn4Y4BTsleyZoZ632uE1CFS6MVD36.html)
I'm a 59 year old beginner, again. I did not pursue the guitar when i was younger because I couldn't tune it. Now with electronic tuners and teachers like you, I'm progressing. Had I known that knowing 4 or 5 chords I could play so many songs I probably would have continued. It took the death of a guitar playing friend to finally make the commitment. Watching your videos is certainly helping with things that other UA-cam teachers are leaving out. Thanks.
+Matt Busby Thanks Matt ! I hope your friend can hear you ! Please check out my newest videos at www.song-bike.com. Other videos are at ua-cam.com/users/jkehew1. And you can receive news, updates, giveaways and cools posts if you 'like' my facebook page: facebook.com/mysongbike.
+Song Bike - jkehew1 Jonathan - I am a professional musician with absolutely no need to watch videos like this. But I did, because you were engaging as soon as you started speaking. Then I watched a bunch, read a lot of positive comments and I was moved. Keep it buddy. Very nice approach for beginners. Nice work and glad to see so many positive comments. :-)
I wanted to play since I was 5 years old, a woman broke up with me, I was sad, so I played the guitar. I was 29 years old when that happened, been playing off and on ever since, I'll be 47 in July.
I'm 70 just starting. I have been watching and learning from your videos. You have made this a great experience. Thanks for the "tricks" on how to play chords more simply. You are a great teacher....you go over the lesson numerous times then add something that's easy to catch on to. Thanks so much for doing what you do.

This guy is one of the best guitar teachers I've ever come across. Walks you through so slowly and easily and so careful, with such a connection with the student or viewer. You cant go wrong.

Great beginner lesson! Same way I taught my sons to play. AND if you simply add E minor chord, you have the chords of the "four chord song" in the key of G: G > D > Em > C. With that, your beginners can play countless songs they've heard on the radio...Amaze their friends and family with the 4 chord song!
I like you're attitude, Jeffrey! By the way, I have great guitar books and e-books available for instant download at www.song-bike.com. On sale through April - 30% off! Promo code: thirty
I have seen many youtube lessons. You are the first person that has a great way of explaining both verbally and visually that gives the viewer something that they can essily learn and use. Especially where you take the time to show the placement of the fingers over and over. May G-d bless you to continue to share your skills with others and may it provide you with good income. Those who give to others end up to also receive. Eliezer Ben Daniel
Jonathan's a fantastic teacher. Paced really well, methodical, clear and doable. Starts off basic and develops the lesson, and doesn't assume his audience already knows certain things. Nothing but admiration for someone who has the skill, is able to teach and willing to teach. Winning combination. Many thanks. 👍 BTW I have the same guitar rack as Jonathan, but sadly that's where the similarities end! 😀
Thanks so much DG! I have a new e-book out, the third in a series... "The Guitar: Year One" You can find it at www.song-bike.com. Check it out! Jonathan
Johnathan, I am nearly 62 and have been playing since I was 12. I thought I had learned pretty much all the tricks there were until watching this video. Now I know you CAN teach an old dog new tricks as I learned something from you and I can't wait until I get home in 4 hours to try it out. I admire your hands on method of teaching and look forward to more. Thank you, Jim
Professional guitar player for 40 years. Everything that you just said was something that I already knew but you explained it very well for people that are just starting out. Good examples and Clarity of what you're talkin about. I'm sure this is going to help out a lot of guitar players just starting out. Thank you for sharing

Kenny I am one of them people. I used to play the guitar 47 years ago. I had brain problems and forgot most of what I knew. I'm 67 now. and this guy is the best I've seen yet. at teaching.
No one is more surprised than me, YofC! The one time I tuck in my shirt turns out to be my Greatest Hit. Damn it. Mr. Kehew, you have no idea how much your video means to me. January of last year I suffered some disabling injuries in an accident. I was thrown out of work soon after. I'll probably never work again. I have a guitar but never really tried to play it. With nothing but time on my hands I've picked it up and have started learning in earnest. This one video is a treasure and once I've mastered it will move on to the next. Living on less than $1,000 a month means this is a real bright spot in my life. Thank you!
I am so happy that youtube exists. With so much to learn I can never get bored. I wonder what people do in bars gossiping, when there are so many good people freely sharing their knowledge in so many subjects!!! I am also learning yoga.
+Univ Univeral Well dude, after learning music from these terrific videos, I recommend you go out to that bar and play with people. I started to play music after my 25th really, but 10 years later I've played music with over a hundred different people from dozens of different countries. To play music with other people is really a magical experience to me. Like a dance perhaps, or some form of Tantric sex :p.
melanieenmats Yeah, you have enough time at your age. I don't believe I will ever play like that in a bar, unless I really learn more. Hard to keep up with the beats when moving between chords. Also, I don't like gigs because they are too loud with the amplifiers and electric guitars... that is detrimental to the ears. Maybe I would enjoy playing out-doors in a village setting where there are no amplifiers. Secondly, I have a lot to learn. I have learnt only for two months, but you say at age 25 you played gigs for 10 years, meaning you learnt the guitar well before your 25th birthday. I should not aim that high because it is not realistic.
I should have clarified. While yes I play stuff for 10 years, I have never played a gig, or even a prepared song. Only Jamming with people, mostly around a fire when camping. Those years ago I also thought I would never get to play with people. But you just have to try it. Just find a friend or group who is welcoming to beginners, and listen. You only need a few notes to be able to play with people. I recommend listening to BB king for inspiration. He's my great example showing how you need not many notes, but good listening effort. The reason I write this much to you is that for me discovering that this road was open to me was hard to describe with words. Truly magical, a very intimate way of interacting with friends. If you don't find the right spot, don't do it. But one of these days you will be in the right spot, with teh right type of people. And in that moment. Put away your fear and self-doubt. Because you only live once, and music with people is too beautiful to not try. Skill is utterly irrelevant!
+melanieenmats that is so very true, you don't need mad guitar skills or be a great singer, a lot of people play and sing better than me but people love me because i play great classic and forgotten songs . I started playing at a Pot Bellys sandwhich, shop,in town and I was totally petrified now after of year of singing 2 hours a week I'm getting gigs everywhere just have to step out in faith
I used to play years ago, I stopped because it was always a struggle to me to make the chord changes, now 20 years later I decided at 55 to try again, I came across your video and in 10 min. you showed me more than I ever learned before. Thank you and this should make things easier for me.
+Chuck1960 Thanks Chuck - that makes my day ! Please check out my newest videos at my new website: www.song-bike.com. You can 'like' my facebook page for giveaways, cool posts, and more: facebook.com/mysongbike.
I purchased the "Easy Guitar Chord & Lead Tricks" book which comes with 24 videos. Never will anyone find a better bang for the buck$$$ anywhere on how to learn to play guitar. Jonathan Kehew is an outstanding teacher in his other UA-cam videos online as well. If anyone wanted to learn to play guitar, buy, this mentioned book, watch the videos, and learn easily. I slowed down the videos to half speed and my learning curve went through the roof. I am 73 years of age. THANKS, Jonathan !
Johnathon Is the only guy I can learn from!!! Hes not pretentious like others that make you feel like fool... Hes calm, cool, and collected...THANK YOU JOHNATHON
After 50 years of scratching the guitar and managing a few old faithfuls without any real progress, I really enjoyed getting back to basics with your first video lesson. I look forward to more. Thanks. Les

Just got my first guitar electric acoustic guitar today at 65 years old found this video and going to learn it from beginning to end can't thank you enough think there is quite a few weeks of practice for me learning the D-C-G cord trick never ever thought 3 cords could sound so great so thank you for your help.
You're welcome and good luck, SG! Please check out my website www.song-bike.com for more videos NOT available on UA-cam. You can become a member and support what I do !
Thank you and will definitely sign up to your site as after watching loads of tutorials on here really think yours are much easier for a bigginers like me.Mind you after having an accident last summer with an 18inch wooden propeller on my rc model plane with engine going full chat and somehow index and middle finger got mangled and now need to have an inch removed from middle finger think it might complicate my learning to play but another one of my bright ideas is I have a new 3D Printer coming and am sure I can make something to stick in finger
The simple reason that D-C-G works in all its variant permutations is that D major and C major are both diatonic chords in the key of G major. Excellent video, Mr. Kehew -- I'm sure that many beginners are benefiting from your generosity.
I appreciate that, PB! By the way, I just wrote my first guitar book! It goes along with my D-C-G Trick video: ua-cam.com/video/3_qpDtfLgs8/v-deo.html And I made a NEW D-C-G Trick video to go along with the book - you can see it and buy the book here: www.song-bike.com. 76 been playing ukulele for 4 years.. decided to learn guitar while on a cruise to St. Marteen. I bought a baby guitar. It was new but a mess. I replaced the tuners, found silk wound strings, lowered the action and now I’m happy! This is the first video I’ve tried and I’m thrilled.. great video

I have been playing rythem for many yrs and I use that system at times, but I also use Bar cords, mainly because it is fast, simple, and you get a full cord every time. I have enjoyed my visit with you and appreciate your time and sharing this with everyone. You are very good that is evident. Please don't take offense to anything I have said sir God Bless you always !🙏⭐⭐

When I was a kid about 1970 I got my first guitar for Christmas. My mom had never played guitar only clarinet and marimba back in high school. She taught me three cords and how to play Red River Valley my first day using the little booklet that came with the guitar. I'm 64 now and that remains my only lesson. She taught me to read chord charts and turned me loose. If people follow your instructions they can learn to play in one day too.
I love that story, Joel ! Please subscribe & check out my website www.song-bike.com to see my other learning materials like books, e-books, PDFs and of course more videos!
It's never too late to start playing! You can make it as easy or as hard as you want, and is a great relaxation therapy technique. Like golf, you focus to the point of ignoring things like money, laundry, and work for a moment. I feel that music is as close to actual magic as you can get. You can make people laugh, cry, feel good, or feel sad. You try to share as much of it as you can, without giving any of it away. This video shows that you don't need years of study to have a little of this magic for your own.
I like your attitude, Michael! I'm a self taught guitarist who's been playing for 30 years now and what you're calling the D-C-G trick is how I've been naturally switching chords in this progression since I was a teen. I never thought of it as a "trick" rather just the easiest way to seamlessly switch between these particular chords. Also the"Hard days night G" is the only way I ever play G in a full chord form. I feel it's important to note that for certain songs you do have to play the full major chords to get the right sound but in general this "trick" is the best way to go, especially for beginners and people who don't quite have the dexterity to seamlessly switch between major chords. Mr. Bo Jangles is another nice descending bass line using this basic same chord progression. Kudos to you for giving out free instruction via social media. Sure wish there was You Tube when I was a kid but, then again having to figure things out on my own has probably made me a better player in the long run.
I'm a fairly accomplished guitarist and was just curious to see what the 'D-C-G' trick was all about -- but what a lovely gentleman! I'll be recommending this guy's videos to anyone wishing to start out on guitar. I love his style and gentle nature, and he's dead right about the D-C-G trick -- and his exploration of the more sophisticated variations are essential. Fantastic stuff!

LOL Frank. I am in with you. I started at 15, but it was a friends grandpa who tought trumpet and guitar and piano. No chords tought, just notes, scales and old folk songs. I wanted to play James Taylor, Santana, lol. Now I am picking it up again and UA-cam tricks making it more fun. I stumbled upon a gold mine! This is great information. Thank you! Ringo might have said "It don't come easy," but playing guitar isn't as hard as people think. I thank my wife almost every day for this gift ❤ I'm in my 6th month of strangling the guitar but we're growing closer every day 😄
You make playing so easy. Started playing around 18 years and stopped due to many years of post graduate school. Now, I'm restarting all over again. The best video I've seen thus far.

Great decision to show everyone the G fingering with the middle, ring and fourth fingers. I had planed for decades using the traditional index, middle and ring fingers and only then "discovered" the fingering that you point out on my own. I now move between different fingerings without even thinking about it, sometimes even during the same song. I urge beginner and novice guitarists to adopt this tip and learn both fingerings for the G Major chord sooner than later.
This is the best lesson I have seen in years, ever. I taught myself the chords ages ago but never really learned how to make music with them, strange as that might sound. Now I can.

Man, I come back to this 6 years later and realize even more how much gold there is here. This chord at 11:38 that he calls the "Hard Day's Night G" I call it the "Wonderwall G." Oasis used this modified G throughout that song. They actually left their fingers unmoved on the 1st and 2nd string for the whole song. I love that

Jonathan, great lesson! I’ve been flat pickn’ bluegrass for the past couple of years and this lesson has opened a few more doors. Thanks for the inspiration. You’ve got an outstanding teaching style.
I guess I am lucky. I am 63, but I have been playing the guitar going way back to 1966, that is 53 to 54 years now. I have heard most of those D-C-G chord combinations in so many ways, from so many different bands, it is a amazing set of chords for the beginners to learn. From a old player like me, you Jonathan Kehew have a wonderful video.

Thanks so much for making this video!! I have been "playing with" the Guitar for over 20 years and have never got anywhere past a few cords. Now that I'm retired I'm dedicated to doing this and while I can play some cords now cleanly this gives me a direction into something that may sound like music. Thanks for the tips and that shortcut on the G cord is interesting. Thank you again so much!!

I wish I would have found you 20 years ago. I've figured out that for most of us that playing guitar is basically learning a thousand tricks and linking them together seamlessly! Not sure if it's that way for a virtuoso or not but it's sure that way for me! Great video and planning to dig deeper into your stuff. Thanks!

Finally I'll mention vids by Joe Pass. Not for beginners but he is so likeable and helpful that you are sure to pick up something or other.
Putting aside some of the douchy comments offered by some other people, this is a great lesson! As a beginner guitar player it helps a lot with chord changes and immediately helped me to play more musically. I have been working on Pink Floyd, Wish you were here. It has a lot of D, C, G in it. Thanks for the help.

This is truly eye opening for a beginner. I'm practiced enough that I can play all these chords without much difficulty, but the info this video really put things together for me. Best guitar training video so far IMO for beginning level / "3 chord strummer" guitar players.

Started playing three months ago, age 53, and have to say this is a wonderful video. Funny things is, as a beginner, you sometimes do the hammer notes and smooth chord changes without knowing why - and then get it all wrong the next time and wonder why. This sure helps explain a lot. I'm subscribing.

@@jkehew1 I did not even know about this DCG thing but the first 3 chords I learned were DCG in that order. I discovered I could move easily from one shape to another, then I find out that "millions" before me also discovered this. I started playing about 6 months ago (I figure I have about of 120hrs of practice, I am 65 I bought a Yamaha FG 830, it needed action lightened). I discovered the DCG thing at about the 60hr point. I was having some good trouble with the G chord (E string finger touching A string) but I stuck it out (relaxed but still with power) and it worked. I do this DCG thing constantly during practice (3x20 minutes per day). My fingers do get sore so then I one hand it with a strap on (standing up) and just work the GB high E strings. Playing notes off these 3 strings, one handed while standing up is very relaxing, let that fretting hand rest a bit. Steven Stills can be observed with this one handed bottom 3 strings only technique in the Suite: Judy Blue Eyes live videos (he also likes to tap on his guitar, which I think makes a cool sound)
Many thanks, as an "intermediate" rythmn guitarist who already knows those three major chords very well I really appreciated the way you broke that lesson down and showed the various tricks and transitions between them.. definitely helped me to explore new ways to play them. Thanks.

+Matt Busby Keep it up Matt. Nothing is as rewarding...
Well it's the truth. :)
How can you teach guitar when you can't even tune one ????
@@soundguy5813
What?
Great beginner lesson! Same way I taught my sons to play. AND if you simply add E minor chord, you have the chords of the "four chord song" in the key of G: G > D > Em > C. With that, your beginners can play countless songs they've heard on the radio...Amaze their friends and family with the 4 chord song!

@@jkehew1 You may want to fix that first link - it goes to some sort of anime site. Looks like there is a space where it shouldn’t be.
Thank you!
+Logical Prepper Hi LP, I'm so sorry for the troubles you've been facing. You make me want to film a lot more videos ! Stay in touch, Jonathan
I bet by now you are sounding really good.
Charles Diaz what are you up to now?
Good on you. Charles. Hope you are a master now and playing in public somewhere.
+Univ Univeral dont learn of youtube forever
Thank you and this should make things easier for me.

l with you, my friend
8 years late and I'm an experienced player but I still enjoyed watching your video and seeing you work that stuff out
Just got my first guitar electric acoustic guitar today at 65 years old found this video and going to learn it from beginning to end can't thank you enough think there is quite a few weeks of practice for me learning the D-C-G cord trick never ever thought 3 cords could sound so great so thank you for your help.
The first real guitar player I found on UA-cam and still tied as one of my top two. Thank you Jonathan.
Hi Tyco, hope you're doing well. Happy New Year !
The simple reason that D-C-G works in all its variant permutations is that D major and C major are both diatonic chords in the key of G major. Excellent video, Mr. Kehew -- I'm sure that many beginners are benefiting from your generosity.
Been a guitar and bass player for 35 years and everybody’s has their own twist. Excellent explanation for beginners to moderate playing
I appreciate that, PB!
By the way, I just wrote my first guitar book!

I just started my life long "dream" of playing the guitar. Wish I wouldn't have waited till I was 50. Great video and a lot of help thanks.
I am with you there, I took out the guitar just 4 years ago at age 46, should have done it long ago. I like the videos as well has helped me immensly

Don't feel alone! I'm 22 and started at 19. The advantage is we know how we learn the best. Use that to expedite your experience. Use your wisdom to sift through all the livks and stuff you don't need to know, and focus on the fundamentals that will help you take off. Good job on getting started :)
Don't let that trouble you. I just took up the mandolin at 55. You're never too old to learn.
Great Instruction Jonathan, really nice insight to the good old DCG magic.
76 been playing ukulele for 4 years.. decided to learn guitar while on a cruise to St. Marteen. I bought a baby guitar. It was new but a mess. I replaced the tuners, found silk wound strings, lowered the action and now I’m happy! This is the first video I’ve tried and I’m thrilled.. great video

Nature Good - I think this is the FUNNIEST comment I’ve ever seen on UA-cam. Especially coming from someone named Nature Good. Thx for the laugh!

My newphew is in a band in Houston and always gets my guitar and it sounds good when he plays it. I want to do it too.

THANK YOU !!! I have learned more from this video in half an hour than many hours of
frustrated "practice". Great video, so well explained, well done.
This is the best lesson I have seen in years, ever. I taught myself the chords ages ago but never really learned how to make music with them, strange as that might sound.

Man, I come back to this 6 years later and realize even more how much gold there is here.
This chord at 11:38 that he calls the "Hard Day's Night G"
I call it the "Wonderwall G."
Oasis used this modified G throughout that song.
They actually left their fingers unmoved on the 1st and 2nd string for the whole song.
I love that

Thanks so much for making this video!! I have been "playing with" the Guitar for over 20 years and have never got anywhere past a few cords. I just started learning to play guitar. I cant believe how hard it is to control that left hand, fingers, not to mention pain on the tip of the fingers. :D Kudos to all guitar players...you rock, hopefully Ill join soon ...in few years at least! :D

This is truly eye opening for a beginner. I'm practiced enough that I can play all these chords without much difficulty, but the info this video really put things together for me. Best guitar training video so far IMO for beginning level / "3 chord strummer" guitar players.
I appreciate that, Rob! I have a e-book that goes with this video, plus a newer version of this video.

Hey CLS, I have an e-book that corresponds with this video. It gives about 30 examples of the DCG Trick, many drawn from famous tunes. Check it out at www.song-bike.com
What a great lesson. 3 months into learning the guitar and this has given me some really useful inspiration. Thanks.
I've been playing, writing, and singing my own songs pretty much all of my life. Yet, I have to say, in something that is very simple for you, I have to say, I have learned something of value, which opens the door for new things. Happy to have watched your video. Thumbs up.
I really appreciate that, Seamus!

Thanks, Harry - I really appreciate that!

Good for you man! Never too old to start learning!!
Many thanks, as an "intermediate" rythmn guitarist who already knows those three major chords very well I really appreciated the way you broke that lesson down and showed the various tricks and transitions between them.. definitely helped me to explore new ways to play them. Many thanks and subscribed.
You're very welcome, Johnny!

Brilliant instruction, thank you. I've just had an elbow rebuild having somersaulted my scooter. The nerve controlling my pinkie and ring finger is slowly coming back and, with it, my desire to get playing once again. Your tutorial cements that. Stretching up the fret board with a non-responsive 'wandering' pinkie ain't easy!
Ouch! Good luck, Anthony - you can do it!

Thank you for this Jonathan! Excellent lesson and trick. Needle and the Damage Done was the first song I ever wanted to learn to play. 40 years later (admittedly with a long break) and I'm ALMOST there! However, what I hadn't realised was how much more widely applicable this sequence is. I know what I'm going to be doing today 😃
