  • Building the Panzer II Ausf F North Africa kit in 1/35 scale from Academy. This 2021 release is an entirely new tool with excellent fit, a good level of detail, and 7 possible camouflage/marking schemes, including one US captured vehicle. In this video I build the tank ready for painting.

    I am with you MN. I build what looks good and what I want to add. Step 16 with the Jerry cans is a must.

    Nice looking tank. Get yourself a box of single edge razor blades. Purposely dull the cutting edge on one. Use what once was the sharp edge to bend the P/E up against the ruler. Makes a nice crease every time.

      @mikehufnagl8696 Рік тому +1

      You can anneal the PE with a lighter to make it easier to bend. Just watch the heat. 👍

      @@mikehufnagl8696 you really don't want to watch the heat too much. It should be approaching red hot ( or even at it ) to properly anneal. I always use a butane torch and just keep it decently far away and build the heat slowly. It also leaves less residue on the surface than a regular lighter, which makes it easier to gauge how hot it is.
      For pieces like the ones he did in this build though, I prefer not annealing them as it will hold the squares shape a lot easier. Annealing tends to work better for me for things that need to have either very complex curves ( like seat belts), or rolled into circles or similar shapes.

    Oooo, I LIKE how you use a block of clay to place small parts. As I'm getting older this will really help me out.

    I love the idea of the captured decal scheme. When I built my Panzer II, I remember doing some research on the captured Panzer/s and I believe any that were captured were only used for logistics so there was no fear of them being mistaken for enemy vehicles as they were largely behind friendly lines.

    Greetings Nerd, it really is a shame these days that modern kits are not designed a lot better, there should be no gaps where there don't need to be any, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia 👍👍👍👍

    Hi there! Great job! I just finished the Tamiya version of this subject. It went together very nicely, and comes with five figures, but no PE, which I'm not sad about... 😎 In my Tamiya kit, the lower hull is all one tub. I like Academy kits, and did a whole series on them early this year. This looks nice, too, and has colored paint schemes...

      Yes, modern Academy kits are decent. Older ones (white box), much less so!

    Great start, MN. It looks like a neat little tank, easily constructed with plenty of options. Excellent call with the tow rope.....the piece of wire looks spot on and so much better than a piece of string. Look forward to seeing this one painted etc in an upcoming episode.

      @ModelNerd  Рік тому +1

      Thanks. Yes, I'm hoping for a fairly quick painting and weathering process on this one, as a change from a lot of my current projects. I built this so quickly I didn't even show my Patreons any WIP photos! :)

    Hi there, on the subject of towing cables, you may want to try your local fishing tackle shop, as they will sell cabled steel/nickel wire for pike fishing
    or maybe check online. This wire is available in several gauges and will look much better than string or thread. great review by the way, thankyou.

    That is a nice build and I think I will build one of these soon. As for paints and incompatibility | now stick to Tamiya Acrylics for spraying and Vallejo for brush painting. I won't even use the Tamiya spray cans as I don't believe they are 100% compatible with their other paints. I only use the Acrylic clear and flat clear as varnishes.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  Рік тому

      Yes, I tend to go with those paints too. I was just very surprised that Tamiya gloss yellowed over Tamiya rattle can aluminium (rattle cans being one of the sturdiest paints in my experience). Oh well, I have to work something out...

    Nice video.
    I have one in my stash, but I am too focused on planes right now.
    I do have the old Tamiya one built though, with a Panzer I B on one side and a King Tiger on the other. Needless to say, those two early war tanks look like toys compared to the King.

      @@ModelNerd look for the one from Takom in 1/35 scale. The best part is that you get both A and B version in the same kit and you can build both.

    Good video and build!!! I have built a few Academy kits in the past and just do not like them for have always ran into some type of problem. Also, if the kit has the 1-piece vinyl tracks, have discovered that they are almost always just a tad bit too short and, of course, do not realize that until after trying to place the tracks on the kit a few times and have broken the running gear off. Plus their decals usually are poor quality type. Have hade the same experiences with AFV Club kits as well. However, will admit they Academy does have some very interesting subject matter and will purchase a kit if I really really really want that particular subject.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  Рік тому +1

      Their newer kits with this green style box are better. I did a video on their older Panzer IV a while ago now - I gave up in the turret because it was si bad and converted it to a munitions carrier 🤣

    Just because the instructions state you can only choose a particular option, what's not to say you can't choose them all, build it how you like it, so long as your happy with the end result, then that's all that matters.
