  • Join me as I search the beach with my Garrett AT Max metal detector in Nome Alaska. I detect in an area that was camped on by the gold miners back in the early 1900's. I hope to find a double eagle gold coin, but have to settle for other treasures.

    I think I may have found the cause of your rocks with holes, Piddocks
    Pidocks are unique in that each side of their shells is divided into 2 or 3 separate sections. Furthermore, one of the piddock's shells has a set of ridges or "teeth", which they use to grind away at clay or soft rock and create tubular burrows. The shape of these burrows is due to the rotating motion of the piddock as it grinds the rock to make its home. The piddock stays in the burrow it digs for the entirety of its eight-year lifespan, with only its siphon exposed to take in water that it filters for food. When the piddock dies and leaves an empty tubular burrow, other marine life such as sea anemone, crabs and other molluscs may use the burrow.

    We find lots of beach glass here in Buffalo NY on Lake Erie. Red is a rare color but black and orange are even more rare. We find beach glass marbles also that have been tumbled around the lake bottom for decades and decades. They get all frosted up too. There are a few ways so many marbles got into Lake Erie. Kids way back when would break Codd bottles for the marbles that were in a groove of the bottle neck and were used for stoppers. Ships carrying loads into Buffalo used marbles as ball bearings to assist in the unloading of cargo at a dock. Sometimes marbles were used as ballast. When the ship was loaded, marbles were dumped into the lake so the ship wasn't too low in the water. Marbles were cheap to use for ballast back then.

  • @Skiddols

    The holes in the rocks are from smaller rocks rubbing against them every time the tide comes in and out. Its not from multiple rocks it is usually from a one single rock that is stronger then the bigger one it is rubbing against. You can even find these "holy Rocks" under your roof where the rain drips water itself will drill through rocks in a year or two.

    The piddocks clams made the holes in the rocks.
    The natives also used the rocks to tie to their nets to hold them down. The natives didn't drill the holes.

    The rock forms that shape from water basically when the water hits the rock it will create a soggy rock but there will always be a party of the rock that soggyer than the rest of the rock. once the rock dries up the soggy bit will still be there but you might not notice it then when the sun hits it it creates a hole causing the rock to transform into a different shape x

    The stones with holes in them are known as adder stones, hag stones, fairy stones (or by like a million other names). the holes can be caused by water erosion, friction from other rocks or by a type of mollusk called Pholas. just FYI.

    Holey rocks, either eddy formed in streams, or maybe they are tools for holding the spindle when using a bow drill for starting a fire. I believe it's called a bearing block. Not sure, though...

  • @loosemoose4134
    @loosemoose4134 7 років тому

    The rock could've been used to straighten arrow or atlatal shafts, or been used as a flywheel in a pump drill. The hole was more than likely made by a process called "pecking" where a rock that is harder than the piece being worked is banged against the rock that you want to be used, over time a hole will appear, the tapering inward is usually found when a rock has been pecked.

    In the time span we're talking, the bullet could be either a .30-40 Krag or a .30-03 Springfield or .30-06 Springfield.
    It may be hard to tell since they're all .30 caliber bullets. But it looks like a .30-40 Krag.

  • @jonathanadler7103
    @jonathanadler7103 7 років тому

    That bullet you found could be a 30/40 Krag, from the Krag Jorgenson rifle. It was a military rifle from that time period that was used by the US military for only a few years. It was just not powerful enough for the military so they dropped it from service.

    Hello Aquachigger, the holes in the rocks are caused by little rocks and sand caught in whirlpools and they swirl around and over the years they carve holes in rocks and stones. I have seen that alot in South Carolina in the Great Falls area.

    I dont know what is causing the holes but I do know that in the reefs, clams slowly secrete some type of acidic membrane that allows them to slowly dig themselves into the reefs surface until only their "lips" if you will, are sticking out of the rock.

    Nuggetnoggen must of been on your beach a few days before you. He also found an exact copy of the watch fob you found, you can read the writing on his and it also looked like it may of been gold plated. As to the holes in the stones, i read that they often can be found in waterfalls. and appear to be formed by small pebbles dancing on top of bigger rocks in eddy currents. The taper would possibly come from the smaller rock wearing away as it danced about there for cutting the tapered hole.

    Those holes are caused by water expanding and contracting and breaking minute particles of stone each time. When it eats all the way through over hundreds are even thousands of years the rocks are scooted over the sands and stones and that widens the diameter of the stones on the bottom after it can no lpnger hold water The small started holes simply have not had enough time for nature fo finish the project, Here locally in Central Texas we have large granite stones such as the famos Enchanted Rock near Fredricksburg that have near perfect bowls that are caused the same way,
