Can the injected cortisone travel systemically to harm other joints? I ask this because: With hesitation, I had such an injection two weeks ago for my triggering thumb joint. It not only didn’t help, but my palm (near where the injection was done) is now giving me problems for the first time ever. I then asked the doctor if she can do a PRP injection (upon discovering your channel) which I would happily pay for out-of-pocket, or at least a referral to hand therapy, but she simply referred me to a hand surgeon. I’ve begun taking UC-ii collagen and glucosamine/chondroitin in hopes of preventing any further destruction. (I had cortisone injections three years ago for both knees-one time only- and at the same time began a keto diet and intermittent fasting and never had any further knee problems, so I was shocked to have suddenly had such a problem with my thumb.)
A cautionary tale. Thanks. Former distance runner who's had an abrasion arthoplasty after delamination of the cartilage on the medial condyle of the r knee. The best "medicine" for the knee has been a switch to swimming and a near elimination of mileage.
How many injections are needed to start the negative effects? I'm schedule for cortisone injections in both wrists to diagnose a carpal/cervical numbness issue. Will a single injection do any harm?
I used to occasionally get Cortisone injections into the facet joint area in my back due to severe back pain. These injections saved my life! It has been years since I have had one, but you will never convince me otherwise. I realize the harm that these injections may cause, but I got them infrequently and eventually did not need them anymore. I would have had to have a radical surgery in my back without these injections.
100%. There is still a use for them. But I don't think a treatment plan consisting of every 3 month cortisone shots is a good one anymore. Glad you had great results!
I’ve been getting cortisone shots for 10 years in my back. it last about 9 weeks so I suffer for 3weeks till I can get another. I’ll do anything then have a 2 level fusion with rods & screws. As a truck driver every one of my fellow drivers told me not to get a fusion
@kurtm.7494 Acetaminophen? Ha! I wish I could just pop a few of those & be okay. Those don't even touch my level of pain. I've been taking prednisone sporadically, and thatbdoes help tremendously, even though they say it's not good for long term use 😢
My mother use to get cortisone shots in her knees for her arthritis. It really relieved her of the discomfort of arthritis & helped her to be mobile. Once the shot started wearing off, her mobility changed. The swelling, pain , discomfort came back. After getting these shots randomly over a period of time, the doctor said they would'nt be able to continue due to risk that those shots can eventually have . What you have explained about cortisone shots is exactly what the doctor told her.
I had one in my knee and I was on cloud nine because I had no pain in my knee! I went from daily pain to no pain. The shot lasted almost 6 months. About 3 years later I've had both knees replaced. I don't have daily pain anymore, but I can't support myself with my legs and knees. If I somehow got down on the ground I can't get back up. So I'm not happy at all with getting my knees replaced. That means only showers, no baths in glorious warm water, not being able to sit on the floor and play with kittens. Do everything you can to take care of your joints.
Yes I had the ops also and I cannot get down on the floor either or kneel,I’m happy I had it done but I hate not being able to get down on the floor to play with all my pets.
If you do decide to get a cortisone shot, pick a Dr that will listen to you. My Orthopedic referred me to get a HA shot at pain mgt Dr office. This Dr insisted I needed a cortisone shot before getting a HA Shot. I told him I was allergic to cortisone and he brushed me off saying my reactions were common side effects. I hesitantly agreed because I really wanted the HA shot. The day of the shot, I again mentioned my allergy concern to the nurse and Dr. 2 separate times. He again said not to worry. Cortisone is very safe. Well, you guessed it. About 5-10 min after the shot, while we were driving I went into anaphylaxis shock. After going to the Urgent care, I now carry a Epi pen. I also got tested at my Allergest office and testing confirmed it. Very, very rare. Be careful and pick a Dr you trust.
Cortisone shots in my shoulder has helped me so much. I only get one when the pain get unbearable which is only once every 4 to 5 years. I am so thankful for them.
My shoulder is also damaged. A torn rotator cuff causes severe pain. The shot that I had relieved the pain for many years. However, the injection was so painful that I chose not to have any more. I also rejected the recommended surgery. I am very careful not to reach for anything that is overhead. Helpful tips include a step stool, a reaching device and placing frequently used items at eye level.
@@asafaust8869 Getting injection on my shoulder next week. Was hoping to not see this kind of message. I am not very good with pain lol. But both my shoulders have been frozen for about 2 years and I can't take it anymore
I was convinced to have a cortisone injection in my knee for arthritis and cartilage degeneration. After that didn’t work my orthopedic wanted to do another one. That was the last time I saw him. And he was a very well respected NFL team orthopedic. Moved on to another Dr that said he doesn’t use cortisone therapy and moved on to gel injections and finally to PRP therapy. Those just delayed the inevitable which was a FKR at the age of 52. I would NEVER use cortisone therapy ever again. Can’t believe Dr’s actually still recommend it knowing the adverse affects long term. Great video thanks.
@@kimrobbins5395 it’s actually the insurance companies that require cortisone first. Thankfully I found a respectable Dr who fudged it and said I already had it so they approved the gel which is safer from what I hear.
I got a cortisone shot and I suffered a very bad anxiety attack. I couldn’t move or raise my arm for 2 days. My muscle relaxer didn’t help. It took 3 days to finally get some sleep. I will never get another cortisone shot.
Yea anxiety hits me like a mafucka. Just worked trough it. Took it yesterday it’s 5am didn’t sleep much it goes away in a few days. Also races my heart which I hate
Took once, not touch my sciatic nerve pain, but then my L5 was slipping off my S1 vertebrae, grade 4. Then the next month a bunch of folks were injured or died from contaminated injections. Narrowly missed that scenario!
My mom was given cortisone shots for emphysema and congestive heart failure. She was ready to go home from the hospital, but they gave her one last shot. She fell back against her pillow, saying "Help me," then fell asleep (or passed out). Next thing we knew, hospital called to say she was dead.
Sorry for your loss. Your mom already had a very serious, non reversable condition. Make sure it was cortisone they gave her. Get the medical records. I've heard hospice/pallitive care nurses say that morphine is given to terminal patients with emphysema and congestive heart failure to help them relax and breathe easier. Hospitals often send patients home or to long term care when when there is nothing else they do for them. Doctors and hospitals really don't explain things to families and friend very well. I'd request a copy of you mother's hospital records and get an appointment with your family doctor and go over the records together and see for yourself. My mother was having renal failure (kidney) and refused dyalasis and was sent to a hospice from the hospital and she died a week later at age 87. Again, sorry for your loss.
I have got Cortisone shots for the past 3 years, but Only once a year for my hip for torn ligament. Yes, it works but once it wears off. Holy moly it hurts to wears there’s limited movement. What you are explaining is what my Dr explained to me since am only 38 years. Am so scared to get surgery.
It was the worst mistake I ever made to my health. I resisted the shots for a long time, but I needed pain relief, and I hadn't known that there were better alternatives. The cortisone shots ate away most of the medial cartilage that I had left.
@@Ntaman8209 There is a doctor in Las Vegas who gives mVASC shots. Do your research, and you will most likely choose to go to him or another doctor who provides them. I had them over a year ago, and I still rarely have pain in my knees.
I’m a retired physical therapist/athletic trainer. In the early 90s, I was well aware that they already knew that cortisone injections actually weakened connective tissue. I would steer patients away from it way back then. What was worse was the physicians that would inject repeatedly…more than what was recommended at the time (no more than 3 injections). What’s worse was/is insurance demanding that injections be tried prior to surgical repair. Why is it that now, some 30 plus years later, they are now bringing attention to the problems when they knew a long time ago. More than 30 years ago, we knew it was a cover for pain, that would often mask it to the point that patients would sustain further injury by using an injured joint, but didn’t “cure” the cause of the pain.
Thank you for mentioning this. From the medical assistant to physicians assistant to every doctor I've been seeing, each one keeps pressuring me to go the cortisone shot route for my OA in my hip. My orthopedic doc said I have "moderate" OA. Yes, it hurts after I've overused it or made a bad move but I NEVER asked them for any pain relief. It's manageable. In fact, I only use an infrared light therapy pad for any pain. No negative side effects. Puts me to sleep, too. I can only guess Doctors get some kind of kickback from Big Pharma for continually pushing these drugs on us. It's kind of amoral, especially in light of possible horrible side effects now known to us. I feel like my insurance (Medicare (Dis)Adavantage) will deny me hip replacement surgery unless and until I relent. I just refuse.
I have had 5 Cortisone injections in my shoulders (In the last year and a half) to supposedly help with frozen shoulders. The last 2 caused me great pain in joints in other parts of my body. One time my Knee flared up badly for about 3 months after the injection. The other time my hip did the same thing for about 3-4 months and then they got better. I have had probably 13 shots in the last 7 years for tendinopathy in my elbows and then Frozen shoulders. They helped short term for golfers elbow. I ended up having surgeries on both elbows, twice in one elbow. I'm glad I saw this video, it confirms what I told 2 of my doctors.
I would get cortisone shots for my shoulder years ago & I would get really bad migraines. After years of not getting them I was forced by my doctor to get it…in the same shoulder because I re-injured it…& I told him that I’m allergic to it & what happens when I get it. He said really cockily “oh you’re not allergic to it…no one can be”!! My mom was with me at the time & she said just to shut him up just get the shot!! Needless to say I relented to getting it & I ended up in the hospital that night with tachycardia!! My heart rate was over 130 & I was really faint & generally felt really bad. Thank god my brother who is an EMT was living with us at the time & took my vitals & rushed me to the hospital.
As a pharmacist and anatomy and physiology instructor at several universities, I warned my father not to get steroid injections in his knees-he didn't listen; 3 weeks later he was crippled
I am 66. I had 2 series of cortisone injections in my arthritic feet (degenerated from years of ballet, hiking. etc) It gave temporary relief but I was worried about long term joint damage. (Which was never mentioned by the orthopedist) I had stem cell and PRP injections which insurance does not cover. I also had PRP injections in my wrists. Best $$$ I ever spent. I found the stem cell doctor on my own. NOT ONE orthopedist, podiatrist, or MD told me to try stem cell therapy. Luckily I live in a large city which has Regenerative medicine doctors. I also do yoga, weights, and walking which keeps my joints mobile. You have to stay active and take supplements to keep your senior joints functional.
Unfortunately I agree...when I was in the military cortisone shots helped me keep going but my thoughts were that it just led to me overdoing things and leading to worse joints. I'm currently in need of 4 replacements...both knees and ankles.
One should watch this video if informed consent has any meaning to cortisone injections. What about the old standbys like acupuncture and treatment by a chiropractor? Looking forward to your next video on new modalities with the caveat that in the absence of long-term studies, the risk portion of the risk/benefit analysis has a way to go before it is fully understood.
I have read some of these studies, and I'm so confused as to why doctors are still pushing steroid injections for the knee. Not one or two rogue doctors, but the orthopedic community, as a whole.
People like me who never abused pain meds in their lives are turning to cortisone shots, thanks to the ones who DID abuse it. Where are we supposed to turn for help? 😢

My doctor hasn't really discouraged me from getting cortisone shots for osteo-arthritic knees. So I've gotten several. They honestly only help a little after the lidocaine wears off in 24 hours. I did not know they were actually destroying my cartilage.
Thank you for this information. I've recently developed knee and hands arthritis. I received just 1 round is cortisone in my thumb joints---wore off in 2 months. Should I *Not get the knees injections??
@@Ivi27 After watching this, I don't think I'll be getting another inection. They are not lasting the full 3 months, but that temporary effect seems worth it. I will be looking for another treatment plan.
If this has been known since 2010, why are they still giving the injections? I had about 4 years, going every 3 months for these injections on both my knees!!! I have severe osteoarthritis in my right knee with no cartilage now in this knee. My left knee has become almost as bad. I am feeling so very betrayed by the medical community right now!
I’ve had Cortizone injections and the other two versions that you mentioned. Cortizone works quickly and lasts a long time. The other two were very slowly don’t really lessen the pain as much and don’t last as long. The last thing I ever wanna do is get a knee replacement. The recovery is extremely painful and takes a long time. Thanks for sharing the information. I hope something brand new becomes to go to medication.
The shots really helped me when I was in the throes of adhesive capsulitis. But two years on I still have periodic pain and not all of the mobility has returned. Not sure if Cortisone injections harmed the tissue but it was a life saver for excruciating pain and ability to do the prescribed PT exercises.
I had steroid injections for both shoulders years ago. Lost all strength inboth arms. Used to take me all day to get dinner ready. Tore my meniscus recently and was given a steroid jab in the knee. Didn't make any difference to pain at all, was expecting that to be the case. Am now going to be booked in for keyhole surgery for it
My mom got a ruptured tendon after a cortisone injection into her shoulder. It did help with the pain in that area but now she has a detached bicep and arm pain. It was not worth it.
Nice discussion. Coincidentally scheduled for epidural injection next month for severe back pain and R sciatica. Have had two back surgeries the last being 4 level laminectomy for spinal stenosis. I have foraminal stenosis moderate to severe at multiple levels due to degenerative arthritis/disc bulging. I would not have the epidural steroid injection if symptoms were less severe. I agree steroids injected should be used very judicially.
@kurtm.7494 Sorry to hear that. My only other option is another major back surgery. I cannot take NSAIDs since affected my renal function when taken in the past. Best of luck to both of us.
@@kurtm.7494 Did you take the 8 hr arthritis & joint pain otc acetaminophen? Did you take the recommended 2 caps every 8 hrs, even before bed? Did it affect your stomach or liver? I've been taking the steroid shot for my back pain every 9 months but want to avoid them. Tia.
I had a cortisone shot to my left knee due to a torn meniscus. I walk 3 miles a day at a fast of 3.5-4.0 mpg 3 days a week. The shot worked miracles. It's been 6 weeks since it was done. Am I damaging my knee? I'm 70 years old.
I had my first steroid shot into my lower back about a year ago. I was having severe pain with sacroiliitis!!! When you are in that much pain it's hard to care about side effects... You're only wanting relief! So far the pain has not returned. Thank God!!! I believe that there are negative side effects to steroid shots, but, I would probably have to do it again if really needed for pain relief.
Often a shot can result in a miraculous recovery. At age 17, 55 years ago I had a portion of cartilage trimmed from my right knee. This knee would flare up from time to time but artritis never set in. X-rays would confirm thru the years that my knee was a little torn up inside. In 2016 I hurt my knee getting into the 3rd of one of those bloody SUVs. I limped for 9 months and even had trouble operating the gas pedal on my car during an extended trip. Finally I relented and went to the Doctor. I received a shot directly into the knee. I experienced relief almost immediately and my knee felt noticeably better as I walked back to the car. By the next day I felt cured. I’ve been good for 6 years. I walk 5 km 4 days a week and I weigh 260 pounds so the knee has been tested. LOL
Insurance seems to pay for things that do more harm than good in the long run. Pharmaceuticals own everything. I have had good success with PRP, stem cells, Traumeel, and BPC157. Germany uses Traumeel (outlawed in the US), which is all natural. It heals as well as minimizing inflammation and pain. BPC157 is a natural-like peptide that also heals tendon and joint damage. There are alternatives out there, but unfortunately, insurance does not cover it.
You couldn't be more right! The minute I go in, from the medical assistant to the physicians assistant to the doctors ALL keep trying to push me to do cortisone shots for my osteoarthritis in my hip. My pain isn't even that bad & I was told I have "moderate" OA. I never once asked them for help with pain relief. Yes, OA is painful but only when I misuse, or overuse the joint. I manage with infrared light therapy pads. NOBODY mentions this device! It's been working well for me. Great for nerve pain & makes me fall right to sleep. NO BAD SIDE EFFECTS! Yes, Big pharma has all medical "professionals" by their short and curlies, or their bank accounts. Some of these med pros are as bad as drug dealers.
I just got a heel injection for my plantar fasciitis last Wednesday. It worked great for a few days and now I am realizing that more rest, physical therapy, and anti- inflammatory diet are the way to go.
It can also raise your glucose levels. Glad you posted this. Because after my shot in March in my knee I now have pain in both hip areas even though I had replacements in both. Blood work showed pre diabetic & had always been ok before.
I had transforminal epidural injections 2- 2 weeks apart. Feel whacked out, pain horrific for last few weeks. I’m 7 days out after last injection. Heart racing, pain getting better a little. Yesterday I felt scared all day. Ugh never again.
Hi all I got injection yesterday on my right hip due to severe pain.. Turns out I'm so worse off today as I feel it's trapped on a nerve. I hope & pray this passing very very soon. I'm so much worse off.. Saying all this I got one 6yrs ago before my left hip replacement and I got over 12mts of pain relief...... Keeping the faith 🙏
The corticosteroids joint injections are for temporary relief of joint pain. It is not good if the underlying cause of joint disease is not addressed. For example in R/A .in O/ A the patients are better by the exercises and more when targeted exercises are recommended according to the diagnosis weakness of one or many of the muscles involved. The biggest problem I found after cortisone injections is as because pain is reduced or diminished the second day the patient started using the joint as a normal joint. Keeping in view of the underlying cause is not reduced or finished yet the careless use of disease joint is demaged more because before it pain itself was protecting the joint excessive use . Two things if used l reduces the further damage is ask the patient to take care of the joint as it was before the injection. Not squat or walking longer distances. Give problem DMARD medicine in R/ A patients and keep on monitoring the progress through blood tests and in O/ A patient try to find any cartilage or ligament damage by MRI and take care it by exercises, rest and if possible corrections by arthroscopy. Injection into the tendon is the worst thing, never ever to do it, if needed just infiltrate outside the tendon or ligament parallel.
Years ago I had a total of two cortisone shots taken over three months time for Morton's Neuroma - a pinched nerve between two toes. My Doctor cautioned withing the first 5 minutes of our first meeting that I could only take a total of three shots. No one else could diagnose the problem but he was totally certain of the problem. He was right. The pain stopped within minutes after months of suffering. I now have a torn Gluteous minimus muscle. They want to give me a cortisone shot to alleviate the pain. I am uncertain if I want to do that. I take Celebrex and it helps but wears off before I can take the next pill. Surgeons are hard to come by and I am on hold right now. Good video.
@@corrinemischiek1487 - Corrine, I am thankful it turned out well for you. It was a very painful experience for me but I found a doctor who knew what he was doing. I think women suffer from Morton's Neuroma more than men because they wear high heels. In any case, it's good to know about the problem particularly if you happen to run into someone with the symptoms who needs help.
Cortisone shot worked great long time ago for neuroma. Had one recently after reactivation of it and had soreness and swelling for a two months now one toe is numb and I can’t walk well at all avoid it’s used too much doctors harm people !
@@lisafiel8457 - Lisa - it seems to me my problem occurred in about 1990. My problem was caused by trying on a shoe that was put in the wrong sized box at a Genesco store in Nashville. In females, I was told it is sometimes caused by wearing high heels. That could account for a repetitive problem. I feel for you. It is not something I ever want again. I recall the doctor mentioned that I might have to have surgical intervention if the shots didn't work. I hope it gets better on it's own.
I got several of these shots in a couple years time, and developed avascular necrosis in my hips, knees and shoulders do you think this could have contributed to that?
Not to mention It spikes my glucose for a couple days and I'm already borderline type 2 diabetic but I'm thin. Started getting the injections after a snowboarding accident, and quickly had to curb them. Type 2 diabetics is genetic in my family and we're all average weight. Is it common for doctors not to ask about diabetic family history when giving injections? I feel like because I'm underweight maybe he didn't ask and if I were overweight he would have?
I've got 3 cortisone shots in 4 months in my hip because of GTPS, and none of them worked! In fact, the last injection I got 7 days ago has made the pain WORSE! I've read that increased pain last up to 48 hours, but now I am 7 days after the injection with INTENSE pain! The last injection I got was a kenacorte, because of pollen alergic. I asked the doctor if he could inject it into my bursa in the hip because I know kenacorte contains cortisone. He did put it into the bursa, and now I have intense pain in the area, and also in my lower back and in the leg and ankle on the same side of the injection. I really regret the last injection, I thought that the two first injections didn't work because the doctor missed or something.
I had a C--Shot 14 years ago, for a meniscus issue. My knee STILL feels good. I'm 73, and I continue to punch and Kick my punching Bags. AND-----I'm considering getting a Shot for my shoulder, after going through 8 months of Therapy.
I had CMC arthritis in both hands. I suffered for several years and had enough. I saw my doctor and decided on surgery on my left hand first and cortisone injection during surgery on my right. I was able to go 2 years before I was ready to do surgery on my right. My hands are everything to me. If I wasn't able to use them, I don't know what I would do. I might even check out of this life. I got the surgery on my right hand last Feb. 17. After 5 months, I still have pain and still need my thumb brace after a day of working on cars like today, or heavy yard work. My left hand is still weak even though its been over 2 years. I am also feeling the effects of age. Normally I get more fit by this time of year but it's just not happening this year.
Four years ago, I suffered from a tear in my left hip labrum. The pain was unbelievable and the worst I had ever felt in my life. Nothing would stop the pain, except for Kratom, which would only last about 30 minutes, or 800 mg ibuprofen, which didn't get rid of the pain. It was only after getting the corticosteroid shot directly in my hip along with time was I able to resume a normal relatively pain free life. I haven't needed any additional shots since then. I doubt this physician has ever experienced that kind of severe pain; like most physicians, he probably follows flow charts and does what he was told to do in college rather than actually listening to his patients and understanding the severity of their pain.
I had 3 Cortisone injections within a year in 2017, one in my shoulder that had a Rotator Cuff tear and the 2 in both hips due to Osteo Arthritis. They helped a lot BUT, in late 2019 I was, unknowingly, basically dying and this culminated in Feb 2020 with me unconscious and with a trip to Casualty/Emergency. The Triage Nurse struggled to find readings on multiple tests and I was taken through straight away. After a multitude of tests, brain MRI, CT Scans, Heart tests, etc, I was diagnosed with Addison's Disease, an Autoimmune Disorder. My Adrenal Glands are no longer producing Cortisol. FYI, we NEED this hormone to stay alive. So now I take Hydrocortisone steroids everyday, for the rest of my life, just to stay alive. I was told by a medical person that the Cortisone injections could have impacted my Pituitary and Adrenal Glands into falsely thinking I had enough Cortisol in me. I will never have another Cortisone injection, no matter the pain.
Thanks for your information. I had trigger finger on my right ring finger from years of grasping tools. Got a shot and it fixed it after over 5 years of locking joint. Over used my hand/grip again and have the same condition again.
Have you considered having a surgical release of the trigger finger since recurrence? It can be done in about 20 mins under local anesthesia, wide awake. Very effective.
I spent 15 years having injections in my arthritic thumbs. All connective tissue is gone. Now, it is bone-on-bone, and I have to have a serious surgery. The pain relief was amazing, however.
With bone on bone knees and now in my shoulders it doesn’t feel like I have choices. One knee had a total replacement but I’m aware shoulders are not repairable either. Have had two shots in my shoulder so far 8 months apart. I will not get another one they are too painful. Thanks for your info. Keep in mind insurance doesn’t pay for more reasonable treatment.
3 years ago a shot helped my hip and supported rigorous walking. 3 years later the hip is painful. what's really changed though is weight. It rose about 45 lbs and made me more sedentary. i'm 85, male. If i were to get another cortizone shot i would do some major weight reduction. But that's me. thanks.
A dear friend had numerous cortisone shots for hips when younger. Ended up with double hip replacement at age 60. I had one. Headaches, no gain, apparently it didn't stay in the " capsule". Other friend has been getting PRP and loves it. Not cheap, but works for her. Gotta do you, but i will go alternative at every opportunity.
I’m having hip replacement of a hip in 2 days for this exact reason. Talk to your doctor about this. If he doesn’t know about these findings ask for a referral to an Orthopedist. I followed my family doctors advice and now I am having to get it replaced by a specialist that uses robotics because it was too severe for the first 2 Orthos that saw me.
I had one cortisone shot on my shoulder, my concern was that one Doctor said I had two minor tears in my Rotor Cuff another Doctor said I didn't.. this was after I had an MRI. What should I ask the doctor?
Three years ago, I received a Cortisone injection into my right shoulder. Within 6 months my shoulder was necrotic and I had to have a shoulder replacement
As a .microbiologist the side effect I worry about is the fact it makes you immunocomprimised because it suppresses your immune system so you can get seriously ill or die from things you would normally fight off.
I have deteriorating spinal disease and have severe crushed nerves and my doctor has been trying to get me to start those injections in my spine but it scares the daylights out of me so I haven't
Lots of studies that suggest cortisone is no better than placebo injections. Lots of studies suggest physical therapy is just as good as cortisone shots. Hyaluronic acid injections done under ultrasound guidance are superior to cortisone. Platelet rich plasma injections are also significantly better. Even dextrose injections are better. Trigger point injections around the musculature also significantly reduce pain and symptoms such that some people on the waiting list for knee replacements decided to take themselves off the list. The reality is that there are MANY other options out there. Whether or not your doctor discusses them with you... ua-cam.com/video/z3veeAgR8AQ/v-deo.html
I just had such a shot yesterday....hip. The doc told me they weren't good for me. So what do you do with the pain you are experiencing? Guess I'm in line for a total hip replacement.
I say wrong they kept me going to 65 I started getting them when I was 40 years old I got to where I couldn't even get out of bed and now at 65 I'm better than I was when I was 40 never had a surgery I got shots in my neck for cluster headaches, shots in my back for sciatica, I get shots in my shoulder for arthritis and bursitis, I get shots in my knees for torn meniscus. if you're a laborer all your life you'll beg for those shots almost immediate relief. Sometimes it takes a few days you go from can't hardly move to no pain at all! Now at 65 I haven't had a shot in 2 years!with no ill effects!🤞
Notably, for the last two decades, i've been receiving periodic (about 3x/year) cortisone shots ([n my buttocks (not directky into my joints)] to successfully treat (clears up) my chronic eczema (which flares up in my fingers every few months). I'm 66 years old and have not noticed any significant side effects; in fact, I'm still able to walk/run and perform full range of motion without any severe joint pain other than the normal temporary pain of exercise that subsequently subsides. I wonder if the side-effects mentioned in the video have more to do with the dosage level, the frequency of injections and the site of the injection.
I recently had this cortisone shot in my left hip! My hip had bad arthritis ! It was a 2 step shot given from the front of my hip. The shot didn't hurt much, but when the injection was given it hurt like hell! I had really good relief for about 5 weeks after but now!! I am having the most worst pain ever in my 79 years on earth! Lots of "popping" very painful, way more than I had before the shot! I made an appointment with my Dr, he looked at a Xray that morning and said he didn't want to operate on me until I lost 30 lbs!!?? now i am suffering what should i do? cant stand this angry PAIN!!!
After 10 monthes with Plantar fasciites i decided to get some cortison injections. After some weeks without pain i went back to the tennis court. So i ruptured my plantar fascia. After another 9 weeks without sports i am hesitant to start running. My question being: are these side effects of those injections reversable? Or is this area forever prone to injury ? My rheumatologist insisted I have cortisone injections. The second injection made my hip bruised for Months and that hip became progressively worse. I’m not getting a hip replacement because Of various other illnesses. I’m waiting for the new Treatments to be available where I live. Is there hope For those of us with bone on bone hip arthritis?
I had a cortisone injection in my knee. Several hours later I got a severe headache untouched by Tylenol or ibuprofen. Began vomiting and headache was so severe I went to the ER. Had a CT which was normal. IV fluids, IV torodol, Demerol, zofran and comparing. It took IV dilaudid to stop the headache. At the time I did not relate it to the cortisone. Injection worked wonders and knee still has not flared up years later. Then I got cortisone in the other knee. Same thing happened but my PCP gave me RXnarcotics and zofran so I weathered it at home. Have you ever heard of a reaction like this because the ortho I am seeing now for foot pain looked at me like I was crazy? We went with a prednisone pack. I have a mild headache after first dose but nothing like the injections.
I Had a cortisone flare and it ruined my finger, the shot was in my MCP for mild arthritis and my whole finger went bonkers, like it was filled with broken glass, now the knuckle has to be replaced due to significant loss shown by x-rays prior and post shot... and my finger has a curve to it like a Dupuytren's contracture . i have had cortisone shots in my knee and never a problem so i thought it would be fine to get one in my hand...yikes big mistake
I had an injection of Kenalog into my knee about 2 weeks ago , my knee pain has been 100 times worse than before I got the injection. I now have pain in my hip, thigh, leg and ankle. I believe my saphenous nerve was punctured during the injection. I am so sorry I gave in and got this injection, my pain was manageable now it is out of control.
1 yr. ago I injured my knee, MRI showed complex meniscus tear, Baker's cyst & bone contusion & tissue edema. 6 mos. later I had a partial meniscectomy. 10 mos. after my 1st injury, I injured my other knee. I was in denial and still can't believe it. How could I injure both knees in 10 mos.? Went back to my ortho and he couldn't believe it either. He thought it was a underlying degenerative issue, although I have no significant arthritis & mild cartledge space loss. I didn't believe his diagnosis. So he gave me a cortisone shot, so I thought it might help.. 2 days later the worst pain I ever had, I could not stand up or walk w/out severe pain. 3 wks. later I am no better I cannot walk w/out a walker. I am at least 50% worse than when I had the shot. My knee feels tight and has swelling, and has electric-shock-like pain, & throbbing & sharp pains. I went to the ER thinking I had DVT, but, a D-Dimer test was neg. The PA gave me Tramadol, I never asked for it, but, I needed it l. I go back to my ortho tomorrow. I think he should do a MRI, which hasn't been done yet. Something is wrong. I just can't do another knee. I could scream! A nightmare injury! I want to wake up from this nightmare. I know about the Cortisone Flare, but, don't think it's what I have. Is that common?
I've had a cortisone injection in my ankle recently because of long term tendonitis. The pain is very much reduced and I'm fully mobile again for the time being. There is a big BUT. Despite being fit and healthy I'm experiencing horrible side effects making me feel dreadful. How effective is the platelet therapy for ankle tendonitis?
I got a cortisone shot once Never again! My pain was nearly un bearable for days Plus I’m diabetic and my sugars were over 400 for almost 3 days It was extremely resistant to insulin So never ever again!
Im not getting it in my foot its not broken or fractured just pain when I jumped down steps i had one in my knee years ago it helped scared of needles thank you from NYC you should het a MRI before any injections
Dr Peng just had a MRI on my spine my spine is crooked disk narrowing; arthritis has just say eat the disk away plus right at my tail bone looks like a y arthritis has almost eat that up now the severe pain can't walk get around now the shots like u r talking about what u have talked about has really help me what to do??
I get Cortizone injections in my SI joints every other month. At one point I was unable to roll over in bed and they have helped. I do notice pulling like scar tissue at the injection site area when I lay on my side now. What kind of damage are these injections doing to me. I also need facet joint injections in my lower back but I don’t want to get too much cortisone. I might switch off every other month. My father always told me not to get Cortizone injections because they will kill your other organs. I don’t know if that is true but I can see by what you talked about you both maybe saying the same thing.
I injured my knee 6 wk ago. My MRI showed I have a significant medial meniscus tear, a bone bruise & a leaking Baker's Cyst. X rays showed no arthritis in the knee. I'm still in extreme pain and the DR vaguely mentioned he might think about a Cortisone shot for pain. After watching your video, I definitely have questions for my DR. I don't want to invite more problems than I already have Thxs
Why not get surgery for meniscus tear? Plasma injections can be good, unless you have cancer , have had the jab, or blood transfusions since the jabs started with spike protein transfer.
@@pattijesinoski1958 I didn't get the jab or have cancer. My DR said if I were younger I would have already gotten the surgery. It's a complex tear in the white/white zone, so it will not heal. He has ordered PT in a few wks and has mentioned a cortisone shot. He said if I have my knee lock up, they might do a arthroscope. The Baker's cyst might never go away either. It's 9 wks today since the injury and I'm still in a lot of pain.
@@pattijesinoski1958 I did get the surgery 6 mo. after the injury . You will not believe it, but,2 mos. ago I injured my other knee. 3 wks. ago I had a cortisone shot and now cannot walk w/out extreme pain and need a walker to get around.
Dear Doctor, My mother have knee ligament cracks and she is undergoing severe pain. Also mother is a kidney and diabetic patient. Consulted an Ortho Doctor and have advised the knee replacement surgery. But consulted another Ortho doctor and have advised the steroid injection. I’m now totally I. Confusion that the injection or the replacement surgery would risk my mothers condition due to other illness. Kindly need your advise🙏🏻
Are PRP injections covered by insurance yet? When I had the option of having the blood plasma, none of it was covered by any insurance and it was very expensive.
You have to weigh the quality of life against the side effects of the shot. When you have chronic pain and are unable to walk at 69 do you take the shot or do you take the wheelchair?
When joints are not working Drs don’t care about damaging them they are just going to replace them. I had it done once only worked 3 weeks! I need both knees replaced
I just had a shot yesterday in my knee. Today I hurt my knee just from getting off the step it's usually how i hurt it and it shuts down. But I'm not sure if the injection is to blame for this or if it's keeping it locked where I can't straighten it out it usually goes back to normal after 30secs its been over 2hrs. I'm confused. The pain is coming from my acl. I'm 33yr
Congratulations on those who took the injections and it helped as for me a doctor give me an injection 1 week after the pain came back and he administered another one so 2 injections in 2 weeks couple days after my tendon ruptured from the Bones having to do surgery using 2 screws to hold down the muscles cast from my leg to my feet for 6 weeks now no cartilage in my right hip bone on bone rubbing pain every day daily now they saying hip replacement wow thanks Doc u screwed my life all it need was ice daily wowwww i am still screwed

You are correct, but I wouldn’t put a 😂 after saying that only because it’s not funny when you think about how many people have gotten hurt. I just got a shot in April 2024 and it gave me neuropathy and I’m in pain 24 hours a day and even my face is numb. I’m 55 if I don’t get any better I just feel like dying.
I have issue with my left ankle. I was offered a cortizone by 6 different doctors and refused it each time. I was close to accepting the first time. Since the first piodatrist I saw for my issue refused to do have me do a mri unless i got a cortizone. He said that my insurance wouldn't approve an mri without me doing cortizone and some other treatments. I realize he might have been trying to milk my insurance. So I went to a new piodatrist that had me do one within a month after issuing me anti inflammatory for a month. Although I eventually left him after a little over a year n a half as he was trying to make me feel pessimistic about my issue at least thats what it seemed like. Said my issue wouldn't resolve without surgery which is misleading. also I had a bad foot issue in my right foot which eventually resolved on its own but piodatric care failed to help it. I was considering cortizone shot for it but my old piodatrist whom i seen years ago for it never brought it up.
I got back shots for a few years and they helped. When they stopped helping I stopped getting them. I got a cortisone shot in my knee and it hurt like hell and has hurt ever since. 🤷🙄
So thankful I didn't let a doctor I saw for knee pain give me cortisone shots! Turns out after going to another doctor the issue is osteoarthritis in my hip causing referred pain to my knee (there's nothing wrong with my knee!).
At last. I refused cortisone shots after the first one put into my knee. I found it was of no benefit. I ended up having bi-lat total knee replacements at the age of 46 in 2000. I still have them.
What questions do you have about cortisone / corticosteroid injections?
@@DazLarson In theory, I suppose that might be possible. In practice, the chances of that happening is likely close to zero. Good luck!
Had a cortisone flare, what are other options available
I used to occasionally get Cortisone injections into the facet joint area in my back due to severe back pain. These injections saved my life! It has been years since I have had one, but you will never convince me otherwise. I realize the harm that these injections may cause, but I got them infrequently and eventually did not need them anymore. I would have had to have a radical surgery in my back without these injections.
100%. There is still a use for them. But I don't think a treatment plan consisting of every 3 month cortisone shots is a good one anymore. Glad you had great results!
@@JeffreyPengMD Thank you so much!
How about Hyaluronic injections to lubricate knee joints ?
100%
Glad to see some doctors do this !
Same here. I cant find my robo vac and can’t get down on the floor to look for it.

You have to strength train after joint replacement...

Me too..anxiety attack..dizziness..pain...😢😢😢
This corroborates the stories I've heard that people who get these types of injection end up needing more and more to cope with the pain 😕
😢 I'm sorry for your loss.
Sorry to hear that
Sorry for your loss.

It was the worst mistake I ever made to my health. I resisted the shots for a long time, but I needed pain relief, and I hadn't known that there were better alternatives. The cortisone shots ate away most of the medial cartilage that I had left.

So who do we go to for these platelet plasma injections?
What were the alternatives ?

You have to stay active and take supplements to keep your senior joints functional.
with joints at least, these shots give you temporary pain relief but at the same time are causing even more damage.
Unfortunately I agree...when I was in the military cortisone shots helped me keep going but my thoughts were that it just led to me overdoing things and leading to worse joints. I'm currently in need of 4 replacements...both knees and ankles.
Thanks for sharing, good luck!

"The recovery is extremely painful and takes a long time" It's not. My 88 year old father was back to normal in a few weeks. Never happier.

LOL
Amazing!

Give problem DMARD medicine in
R/ A patients and keep on monitoring the progress through blood tests and in O/ A patient try to find any cartilage or ligament damage by MRI and take care it by exercises, rest and if possible corrections by arthroscopy.

Good video.
I had Morton’s Neuroma. Had cortisone shots, but ended up getting surgery. Haven’t had an issue with that since.
Yes, definitely increased blood sugars as well
I've got 3 cortisone shots in 4 months in my hip because of GTPS, and none of them worked!
My knee STILL
feels good. I'm 73, and I continue to punch and Kick my punching
Bags. AND-----I'm considering getting a Shot for my shoulder, after
going through 8 months of Therapy.
Great video Jeffrey!!!!!!

Unfortunately, PRP isn't covered by insurance. Typical.
My wife and a friend's wife had massive pain from the shots. I have had a few with no issues.

So, what are you saying? People should just live with pain or undergo expensive surgery that may be worse than the shots?
Lots of studies that suggest cortisone is no better than placebo injections. Lots of studies suggest physical therapy is just as good as cortisone shots. Hyaluronic acid injections done under ultrasound guidance are superior to cortisone. Platelet rich plasma injections are also significantly better. Even dextrose injections are better. Trigger point injections around the musculature also significantly reduce pain and symptoms such that some people on the waiting list for knee replacements decided to take themselves off the list. The reality is that there are MANY other options out there. Whether or not your doctor discusses them with you...

I just had such a shot yesterday....hip. The doc told me they weren't good for me. So what do you do with the pain you are experiencing? Guess I'm in line for a total hip replacement.
Such valuable information! Any chance of spreading this news to dr.'s who keep giving these c. Injections !?☹
The word is spreading! Slowly... but spreading

"Leverage" isn't a verb, it's a noun.
Dont wanna be scared forever.
I had my first cortisone injection a couple days ago. I did notice I had a dull headache yesterday🤔
That shot spiked my glucose level ,now I am a full pledge type 2 diabetic.
Without cortisone shots in my back for sciatica, I don’t know where I would be now.
rhizotomy
I'm convinced the ortho surgeons gives these so that you'll be back in no time for joint replacement surgeries.
I definitely get that feeling, too. 😮

Thank you so much for helping to understand what I got myself into !!!
You're welcome!
If my doctor lets me deteriorate to the point of needing joint replacement, they're also gonna end up needing it
I just had a shot yesterday in my knee.
I get them every three months or so…SI Joint Injections…they work for a short time but I have so much pain if I don’t get them. What else can I do?

You are correct, but I wouldn’t put a 😂 after saying that only because it’s not funny when you think about how many people have gotten hurt.
Thank you 🙏 Does HA or PRP help for swelling knees with osteoarthritis?
Yup!
Thank you for posting this. I have knee pain and was considering getting cortisone injections, now I'm thinking... should I cancel the appointment🤔
The worse side effecting I am having is severe pain & can no longer walk !
