Does the product work just as it did before it broke? I've never broken any of my MAC eyeshadows, so I'm not sure, but I'm wondering if it's still as pigmented and if the texture is the same as it was before it broke?
Fantastic tips! I have always had to toss out broken shadows, blushes, etc before and I just tried this and it totally worked! I was able to salvage 2 blushes and it did take about 3 days to dry out completely, but yes, it worked. I am thrilled. When I saw your broken palette and heard you dropped the whole thing, I cringed and wanted to cry with you. Yay for saving the day with this trick!!! Many thanks Julia!
Hi Julia, I purchased the new NYX Prismatic shadows and when they arrived 3 of them were completely shattered (almost powder looking). Would what you did in your video to the Mac shadows work the same to these Prismatic shadows?
Thank you so much for posting this video. I got an order today and one of my shadows was broken. I grabbed my alcohol and spatula and did surgery. Thanks again!
OMG, this happened to me with my brown MAC palette and I literally cried... I have had some success repressing, but I find they are never quite as sturdy after :( Glad you were able to fix everything, that sound when the palette hits the floor, worst feeling!
Please can you tell me which colours you have in your palette as I a trying to make a neutral palette with those colours. Many, many thanks and kind regards, MBx
One of my beloved Inglot eyeshadows fell to it's doom a little while ago but there was no chance of redeeming it! :( But this is definitely worth remembering for the future! Such great tips! Thanks for sharing, Julia!
Yay! Just depotted my too faced Christmas in New York with some casualties. This method works perfectly!! Worth it so all of my favorite shadows are in one place. I don't have to open this little books!!!! Thanks!
Yes! Some pigments work better than others, some just don't have that "sticky" ingredient that keeps them pressed together. I have pressed some MAC pigments this way though.
Hallo Julia!
No one ever answers me. Please, can you tell me if this works the same for matte eyeshadows? I saw at the top of your "fixed" pallete there were some mattes at the top. Did you fix thos as well? Same technique? Thank you!
This so far has been the easiest way for me to do this, I destroyed quite a few shadows when I depotted the jh palette last night, lol but did this method just now and tomorrow I'll do the pressing with coin and put magnet, tfs
You should be able to get it at a pharmacy / supermarket as a 100% rubbing alcohol it is called Isopropyl, just google it. or if in Australia it will be under the name Isocol in a bright green bottle. Also it is very important you do this in a well ventilated area, open a window have a fan on.
Oh, Julia, I felt so awful for you when the drop happened. I know how upset I would have been so I know you were very devastated. Love this salvaging technique, though. What a good idea! Thanks for sharing !!!
My favourite mac eyeshadow that I have is copper plate and it was shattered as soon as I brought it home from the store. I just descided to mess it up further and put it in a little mac sample pot to use as a pigment.
Julia, pls do a video on how long you usually keep your makeup before disposing it. Tyra did a similar show on makeup disposal due to bacteria formation. Since you are one person who has a ton of makeup, how soon do you finish your make up...1 month?, 1 year? ...never?
Mostly it is ok. I have tried it on one very matte shadow and it was a bit different after, but still ok - better than throwing away! It really depends on the formulation of each shadow. It's not a guarantee but usually it works great.
I've used this before on a matte, and as far as I can tell, the pigment remains the same. Since the alcohol is clear, it shouldn't affect the color. If you have a swirled, multicolor product however, the colors will most likely mix a bit since the alcohol basically breaks down the shadow to a liquid state until it dries again. Good luck fixing your shadows! :D
As long as you wait long enough for the alcohol to dry (overnight like she said, or about 8-12 hours), it will evaporate, so yes, after that time it's fine to use on your eye. Even if you did use it early, the alcohol shouldn't hurt your eye, but it might sting or irritate your skin, so best to be patient until it's fully evaporated. :)
I think they still work as well (actually I've heard some people say they turn out even more pigmented after this process). I've only ever done this on a translucent face powder and it worked fine afterward--I've never done eyeshadows though. But if you do break an eyeshadow, I'd say it's always worth a try to see if you can fix it before buying a new one :)
Awesome trick! Too bad it's not easy to get rubbing alcohol here in the UK, or is it? I've never seen it at the pharmacy...still, so glad you could fix that palette, it's very pretty =)
Ethanol is not rubbing alcohol. Ethanol is the alcohol in alcoholic drinks. Rubbing alcohol is commonly isopropyl alcohol. Honestly, either will do.As long as it is able to evaporate quickly and completely, so even something like acetone (nail polish remover) would work. All of these solvents should leave the same effect on the shadows.
I hope and pray I will be able to be as successful as you on UA-cam I only have 790 subbies and love them all but I wish to be successful and share my passion !! You go girl
Absolutely, it just won't be domed anymore. Just had to do this technique with an entire baked shadow palette. They work the exact same, just the dome is gone. :)

Just curious if anyone has had a problem after fixing the broken shadows or face powders, etc. with being able to pick up the product on a brush afterwards? I can’t seem to get hardly ANYTHING on my brush or even a finger for that matter now that I have repaired and pressed my matte shadow with rubbing alcohol. I’ve also tried just adding the alcohol and smoothing it across and not packing it down hoping it would help. Nope. Advice???!? Also, any tips on reviving dried up gel liner??
+Leah Cederquist Hence also why I won't try to waste making a loose setting powder into pressed, or any matte blush (which is all of mine) fixable. It's a mystery... the world may never know!! I did however find a "pressing medium" that has glycerin as the base I think? That might work since its not purely alcohol based for the mattes?? I think I'm gonna try it...

Very informative, Julia! Thank you for the tips. Your renewed palette looks perfect (and hopefully applies beautifully as well) !!!
Wow what a great tutorial....you have help me save so many eye shadows and blushes !!!!
I'm so happy for you Julia; I almost cry in the last video when you drop your eye shadows, good and easy tutorial!
I'm so glad it worked! After watching your last video I've become a bit more careful with my MAC palettes... Will you tell us what's in yours?
SO glad that you were able to repair you pallet. I felt so bad for you when it broke during the tutorial.
Can you do this to make translucence powder into pressed powder?
Ana Villanueva I think so
This palette looks amazing, which colors do you have in there?
I loved this! I'm definitely going to try it on the Balm's Mary-Lou Manizer that I shattered.

Oh yay! I'm so glad you were able to salvage your shadows!
so do you repress it the next morning once the alcohol has evaporated, or while it's still wet?
Wow what a wonderful video - I just learned a valuable lesson - thank you Julia!!!
....oh man! how devastating.......but what an ingenious solution!! thanks for showing this, Julia...xo
Oh that is so great to hear you fixed your eyeshadows up! :D
Thank you so much for posting this video. I got an order today and one of my shadows was broken. I grabbed my alcohol and spatula and did surgery. Thanks again!
THank you so much. I've got MAC's blush that I dropped and now it's better when I did this with the rubbing alcohol ! Thank you so much
Omg this is exactly what I needed! I recently broke my blush and was devastated! So thank you
OMG, this happened to me with my brown MAC palette and I literally cried... I have had some success repressing, but I find they are never quite as sturdy after :( Glad you were able to fix everything, that sound when the palette hits the floor, worst feeling!

I usually break up the broken parts first so they absorb the alcohol better. ♥ Elle
Great tip!
Elle Is For Living that's what I did!!
Wonderful! Are there any negative effect on the eyes or skin?
Thank you very much for that info :)
One of my beloved Inglot eyeshadows fell to it's doom a little while ago but there was no chance of redeeming it! :( But this is definitely worth remembering for the future! Such great tips! Thanks for sharing, Julia!
which mac eyeshadow it was? awesome colour!!
I'm so glad you were able to fix your palette :) new sub!
Awesome tip!! Glad you were able to fix, those eyeshadow aren't cheap..
Yay! Just depotted my too faced Christmas in New York with some casualties. This method works perfectly!! Worth it so all of my favorite shadows are in one place. I don't have to open this little books!!!! Thanks!

oh thank god you posted this, my stila palette dropped and oneeyeyshadow fell, i salvaged what i could but its broken now, gonna try this
Does the alcohol have any effect on the pigment of the shadow or the color?
None whatsoever ^-^
For me, it made my blushes more pigmented! But I think that was a rare thing to happen as my eyeshadows still have the same pigmentation.
It a made my nars blush more pigmented also!
Ah that's so cool! Maybe I should try it again on another blush of mine to see what happens :)
If it's already broken can't hurt to try! Let us know how it works out :)
Will this affect the quality of the product? As in will there be fallout or will the pigmentation be light or anything else?
Does it change the product? If you add alcohol will the color pay off be the same ?
Thank you for this info! Awesome to know they can be fixed!
Funny to see you using a swiss franc :) May I ask where you got it? Did you came in my country lately?
Hallo Julia!
Where Can I buy a pan like the one you have all your individual eyeshadows in?
No one ever answers me. Please, can you tell me if this works the same for matte eyeshadows? I saw at the top of your "fixed" pallete there were some mattes at the top. Did you fix thos as well? Same technique? Thank you!
That was easy. Can blush be fixed this way as well? I am bad about dropping my blush.
Which color is the reddish brown one? Does anybody know the name?
This so far has been the easiest way for me to do this, I destroyed quite a few shadows when I depotted the jh palette last night, lol but did this method just now and tomorrow I'll do the pressing with coin and put magnet, tfs
Does this change the texture/application of the product?
So cool! Thank you for making this tutorial!
So does the eyeshadow still perform the same??
Yes they do. Have done this before.
I didn't know this so thanks for the info :) I'm glad that your shadows came out ok.
Does It change the pigmentation or quality of the shadow or blush

Will this technique work for Mac Mineralise skin finish? Mine fell on the floor. It was a limited edition skin finish.
I am glad you got your eyeshadows fixed Julia, felt so bad for you when that happened in your recent tutorial... but I am glad everything is ok now :)
Since you apply ethanol on eye shadow, is it still safe to apply on skin??? On does the alcohol cause skin problems???
it evaporates.
can you say what color are in your neutral palette?
Does it effect the quality of the shadow , will it still blend the same ?
Mostly it is ok. I have tried it on one very matte shadow and it was a bit different after, but still ok - better than throwing away! It really depends on the formulation of each shadow. It's not a guarantee but usually it works great.
Awesome because I broke one of my pallets and was wondering ! Thank you for responding !
This helped me a lot I just broke a mineral pressed blush I used this technique and it looks like new :)
Wow! Super easy! Thanks for sharing!
Seriously, thank you Julia!
I broke my Mac compact a little while ago. Would it work for it as well?
Wow this was so helpful! Great insight info Julia ! Ps I loveeeeee your videos including the fit diaries :)
Wow, I've never seen that before. That was really cool. I will keep this in mind.
Can i use this technique for the powder? Thanks :***
I love this tip. Thank you.
what colors that i mix to get dusty pink? ?? please
Julia! Does this work for MATTE eyeshadows????? i have broken eyebrow shadows which are matte
will it wreak the pigmentation?
I've used this before on a matte, and as far as I can tell, the pigment remains the same. Since the alcohol is clear, it shouldn't affect the color. If you have a swirled, multicolor product however, the colors will most likely mix a bit since the alcohol basically breaks down the shadow to a liquid state until it dries again.

Since the graduation season is upon us, please could you make a video on makeup suitable for graduation ceremony and pictures. Thank you
Does it not alter the product at all?
Thank you! I just broke this eyeshadow color that I really like, and totally panicked. Thanks for posting this.
does this work on blush as well?
So can we use any rubbing alcohol as long as it's over 70%
Can this damage the eye ? Seems so easy to do but im a little scared that it might cause some irritating or burning .
Dropping a palette that size is HIDEOUS! Thanks for the quick, informative video, very helpful.
:)
Is it safe to put alcoohol in it and then on the eye?

Lochnessa33 does the alcohol affect the way the eyeshadows perform? Or do they still work just as well as before they were cracked?
I think they still work as well (actually I've heard some people say they turn out even more pigmented after this process). Okay thanks :) I'll definitely try that next time I break a shadow then Lochnessa33
I just used this my powder broke and I was a little mad until I remembered your video!!! This was such a great save!!!
Can I use vodka?
it's not the drinking alcohol, it's the rubbing kind so no
not true, you totally can, I've been using it to press all my shadows and it has worked wonderfully
will the alcohol cause problems on the eye? health problems
Lecia Ray It is most likely in your eyeshadow already. It is in some moisturizers too
Lecia Ray the alcohol evaporates, there is no alcohol in your eyeshadow left once you put it on your eyes. Isopropyl works better than Ethanol btw

Apparently it's also called Surgical Spirit, so you might want to look for that :)
they used to stock it in boots but not any more so I bought mine on ebay for less than £5 (99.9%pure, 250ml), look for isopropyl alcohol :)

you are so resourceful it's nuts! if I dropped this and broke it I'd probably cry and give up.
Yay! So glad this is possible.
Can we use water????
AMAZINGGG!! And soo helpful!
I hope and pray I will be able to be as successful as you on UA-cam I only have 790 subbies and love them all but I wish to be successful and share my passion !! You go girl
So glad you managed to repair it!!!! :) xxxx
Can I use same technic with baked products?
Absolutely, it just won't be domed anymore. Just had to do this technique with an entire baked shadow palette. They work the exact same, just the dome is gone. :)

I've had the same problem with my matte eyeshadows. The shimmery ones are fine but for some reason it ruined the matte ones
