  • Psychology professor Jordan B. Peterson points out that a supposed incapability of cruelty doesn’t make you a better person. Quite the contrary, as he widens the argument to the teachings of martial arts schools and even the mythical search for the Holy Grail.
This excerpt is part of Dr. Peterson’s comprehensive lecture “2017 Personality 04/05: Heroic and Shamanic Initiations” you can watch entirely here:

"Blessed is the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth."
...So the second possible translation of this beatitude is:
"Blessed is the man who has every instinct, every impulse,
every unruly passion under control. Blessed is the man
      who is self-controlled."

My martial arts instructor said something like this, "You're not training to fight, you're training to live harmoniously, but if you should happen to get into a fight, it's best to be a fighter with even a low chance of winning, than a coward with none"

This is really the definition of a gentleman. A gentleman is someone who is capable of doing evil but chooses not to.

I am not afraid, I was born to do this : a gentleman is a minor nobleman, often with the right to bear a family coat of arms.

I am not afraid, I was born to do this The fuck? A gentleman is someone who's polite, service-happy, socially excellent, well-presented, and a man. It's not the same thing as Internet edgelords' fantasy of the mysterious, tortured antihero. Choosing to not do evil things is just normal decent behaviour.

John Wayne has a rather famous quote about being a gentleman .. he said in order to be a gentleman you have to be a man first.
Today's society believes that a gentleman is rather feminine, mild by nature but traditionally it was not so, it is a man who controls his "nature" .. his nature does not control him.

    • @ramses7309
      @ramses7309 6 років тому +1

I agree with you. The modern definition of gentleman has been bastardized to be an impotent, and incompetent human carpet. I partly blame the modern (third) wave of feminism and post-modern communists who would love nothing to slap around men, put them in chains, and make them eat shit while they destroy the floodgates built by our fathers, grandfathers, and ancestors (who probably thought of us and loved us way more than us crying about "saving the environment for our children!") to let in the invasion of radial ideologists (fundamental Muslims, runaway criminals, Chinese/NK propagandists, globalists, major OPEC corporation players) and then blame us even more, for not being able to protect them after castrating us when they end up getting raped and pillaged. At one point I was seething in rage after I took the "red pill". I know this term is thrown around loosely and almost canonized as a meme now but I think many of you will understand better what I'm talking about if I use this term. Now after the anger has subsided significantly, Jordan Peterson and many other reasonable leaders have helped me to calmly and clearly see the sides enveloping in this ideological war. World War III may not be be a traditional war fought on the plains and trenches like our ancestors, but it will happen, beginning with the divide in our small circle of friends, to the local community, our workplace, to the states, the nations, and the entire world. We are all connected as humans, whether through the Internet, or to a more esoteric idea of a collective conscious/unconscious, and we cannot deny the existence of this growing divide any longer.
We are a society who irrationally idolizes youth (plastic surgery, cosmetic surgeries, boom in the makeup industry) while not looking twice before throwing our parents and grandparents into a senior home. Our parents may not have literally built this country, but their fathers, and their grandfathers, and the fathers and mothers before that brought us out of chaotic wars, famine, natural predators, depression/recession, and general lethargy to give us many of the liberties we take for granted today.
Do you think our parents, grandparents and ancestors never were in their teens and 20's? Do you think we're so advanced and intelligent now, that we're the only ones that ever sat back and questioned the purpose of life? I'm not saying everyone should live a solemn and linear-planned life, but have some respect for the core essence of work and sacrifice... Starting with cleaning your room, obviously!

I'm going to try and explain my feelings towards Peterson and his lectures. I feel like he's answering questions that have been important to me and my sense of self all the way back to when I was 12 years old, although up until my finding him I didn't even know what those questions were? Like I knew that there was some question in the back of my mind that couldn't be communicated through words, and I imagine that might be the root for the depression I suffered from the age of 12 to fairly recently (I'm 22 now). I am so incredibly thankful to Dr. Peterson for illuminating these issues for me, though I've had strong male role models in my life I was never told or educated on what it meant to be a man, I've had to go through like 3 different variations of what I thought being a man was and none of them are even close.
The years of depression that I suffered were bizarre, it wasn't suicidal or anything beyond contemplative but it was like being on autopilot for 7 years and suppressing my true self. When I listen to Peterson's lectures it's like I'm being provided context for all the time I spent locked within myself, and I no longer feel guilty about all the years I missed as a kid trying to fit in by downplaying my intelligence or my maturity. The great feeling of my life thus far has been 'shame', but after discovering Peterson it has become 'hope'.

He's so right about martial arts training, after I was trained I became even more dangerous but it also ended my fighting days. A good teacher will tell you there is no need to harm the foolish and once you know how to take a life you also know how to avoid fighting in the first place.

2:02 I havent been in a single fight since I started taking martial arts. I dont think it has to do entirely with this, because I never backed down from a fight when I was younger, not once. was a problem actually. But, I could see that maybe acting more like "well yeah I can kick your ass if you try" has been a deterrent a little bit. Its probably not entirely a coincidence at least. Some fights I had to confidence to back off from too because I KNEW I could win. I think a big reason I wanted to be in fights, today still too, is because I want to find out if I can win if I wanted.
so actually... maybe its a better self deterrent than a intimidation deterrent... hmm....

On the one hand I am a very compassionate and loving person. On the other hand I know that I could be an assassin and not feel any guilt or remorse (of course I would only go after bad people like pedophiles). So I choose to focus on being compassionate and caring rather than shutting off my humanity like a flip of a switch. I know I could be a very dangerous person if I allowed myself to be. I prefer to be a good and kind person. I love myself more for it. There are certain people alive today because I can control the dark side of me. People that have seriously abused me my entire life that really deserve to be wiped off the face of the planet, but are still around because of my good graces and willingness to ignore that side of myself that really wants to hurt them. I respect myself like you would respect a lion or tiger, or some big predator. You respect those animals, but at the same time you fear them, and are in awe of them (especially the tamed ones because they fight their natural instinct to an extent). It is nothing to bolster or brag about, or to be proud of. It is something to be respected. The fact that someone knows themselves that well and knows what they could be capable of, yet chooses to do the right thing and be a good person. If you knew me you wouldn't really know that darker side of me was there. Sometimes it would show through if I ran across a really stupid ass person, but I would fight that side of me that would just want to take them out. I HATE stupid people with a passion. Seriously, really really hate them. Yet they are still alive walking all around me and annoying me on a daily basis with their stupidity. That is their right. Who am I to play "God" (Don't believe in the Christian god. I did for 30 years, but now I am pagan). Everyone has the right to life, unless they are evil and do harm to others for no other reason than they wanted to. Those are the people I would go after if I could legally. Anyway, I get what he is saying and he is right.

Very true, same with "an hour", not "a hour", based entirely on pronunciation, not spelling.
On a note though, when you see people argue for "an historic" it's because those people (usually brits) actually pronounce it "an istoric", so for them that is actually the correct way to say/write it. :)
