The top junior club in America M2, headed by one of the greatest Nittany Lions of all time is right nearby.
There is even a growing MMA Gym sponsored by American Top Team that Nickal, Cassar, and others train at after leaving school.

It’s a backhanded compliment….Taylor and others were on the way to Iowa State, and the wins would have come, just not as fast as immersing yourself in the best talent pool there is.
Also, I believe up until this incoming next year, Iowa STATISTICALLY has gotten higher ranked recruits than PENN STATE in the last few years. Where is the production. And what will Cael do with the incoming number 1 class? Lillendahl, Duke, Sealey, Mirasola’s….What happens if he gets Bassett in 2 years?
If you wanna see development, watch the Haines/Franek match, and watch Levi grab Frank’s wrist and control his arm, and fight off a good TD attempt by Franek, and in turn, get the TD. Plz tell me the last time you’ve seen that.
Cael is getting better production through a better environment for kids. If you don’t think that Dual was the best recruiting video for potential new kids coming in, you are kidding yourself.

At some point some needs to bring up the elephant in the room, brands brothers have to go, I grew up idolizing these guys but the performance that they are getting out of there wrestlers isn't cutting it, iowa was used to winning and now we have become accustomed to coming n second, penn literally justs keeps getting better and better, from there recruiting to there development of getting better every year while they are there, so many iowa wrestlers either stagnant or get worst, woods was supposed to win it and he loses to a guy he beat last year who dominates him this year, amd then a freshman whips his butt, Jacob Warner cassioppi the list goes on, I am tired of it, the brands brothers were lions so I am not taking absolutely anything away from there wrestling skills but i remember very few matches were they weren't trying to pin or tech u, the guys besides Lee obviously just do ground and pound and forget they need takedowns to win or they need to be on point that when someone attempts to score they can't, I am tired of iowa losing to penn and at this point as long as cael stays and brands brothers stay we will keep coming n second, I can't see a power house like Alabama football keeping there same coach for the last 10 years keeps getting them to the 2nd place trophy so why are we ok when it comes to wrestling, do we not deserve better too??????

The Brands brothers can teach you how to wrestle but so can every other D1 coach. Cael went to PSU bc he knew he would get great talent from the east coast. Once the country saw what he was doing it drew the best from everywhere. His staff is great at making sure they peak and are healthy at the right time. Wrestling is inherently tough, the kids dont need to GRIND every minute of every practice year round. I wont pretend to know what it is like at iowa but it is becoming the place blue chippers go to stagnate. Aaron Brooks looks small at 197 but Cael and staff just figure out what works best for him there. It is where he wants to be so they just support him. Tom and Terry seem to think iowa is sparta and you just weed out the weak by grinding. I am a PA wrestling fan but forgot, until I was at Hershey last year, that kaleb young won a state title at 160 his senior year. He wrestled 157 his final year at iowa. I watched him lift and mat return guys his freshman year at iowa one arm. He was strong enough for 165 or 174. He had to suffer to maintain that weight his whole career. I dont doubt that they love their guys but they are becoming obsolete. If you cant adapt you become extinct.

Didn't the Brands wrestle under coach Dan Gable? Very old school mentality, I imagine. Sanderson is a 21st century athlete and sportsman. Sports medicine and physiology really began to develop through the 80's and 90's, and the science has improved exponentially in these years since the turn of the century. The difference between the methods and mindsets of today versus the 70's is like the difference between the old wild west and the modern western world.

I catch myself thinking if Iowa wants to compete with Penn St, they need to get rid of Brands and Co. Then I think back and they won a title 2 years ago and should’ve won 2 in a row there. They are a perennial top 3 team, which says a lot. I think (could be wrong) that they should get better assistants. Morningstar and Telford are probably great coaches, but it’s Iowa, they could probably do better . They need to get a couple guys, say Alex Dieringer, where they can learn to coach for the next few years but still provide elite world level skill. They need to bring an outside technique to the coaching. Someone like Jason Nolf would be perfect, but is obviously a long shot. Just my 2 cents, but I’d bet many people would agree they need to change something or continue to win one title every decade to Penn States 8. Unless Iowa gets an amazing recruiting class, Penn st. Is going to cruise for another 2-3 years unchallenged.

@@Steveo47dog you're right. But why was he injured? Because his coaches the Brands bros didn't manage his injuries well.

@@Steveo47dog False equivalency. Cassar was hurt and didn't wrestle, Spencer suited up and took the mat. Had he not been pinned he would have wrestled, instead he used the injury as an excuse to forfeit out of the tourney.

Coach Brands, you are doing fine. You do a job not for the faint of heart posters & bloggers, but for the true fans. Go HAWKS, Sheldon ORABS, & West Sioux FALCONS; You & Terry were passionate from the day you started wresting. I know this first hand from the 80's in the Siouxland conference. To this day I hate losing more than I like winning in everything that I do; YOU TAUGHT ME THAT EVEN BEFORE YOU WERE A COACH, Thank You both.

Yes you are putting my man Sanders on a pedestal. He is an awesome coach. Can you just put the pride down. Secondly you are not using Gabe correctly. Excuse excuses for not using Gabe. Gabe is much better than your wrestler you are using. A dress that elephant in the room why don’t you. Oh yeah it will expose the truth.
