There will be no videos in the next two or three days. I will be preparing for the 10K subs special. Thanks to all of the kind comments I received in my previous video :D
In my opinion a scalper is someone who knowingly buys as many items as possible with the primary intention of reselling them to maximize financial gain (profit). As opposed to a collector, who will buy only the minimum quantity they need (to fill gaps in the collection, for customizing, for gifting / trading with another collector). Naturally there will be times when a collector has a genuine spring clean and sells some castings they feel they no longer need - potentially turning a profit on items now considered rare - but this to me is part of normal collecting cycles and not scalping. Just my view..
I'm a college kid for context, but I will typically check out the stock of my stores and see if there's any overstock. If there is I'll buy a couple to resell typically leaving most of them, if I have blindbags I'll sell my duplicates and the like.
LOL The first time I watched your video, I didn't even notice that you included a screenshot of my response. I plan on talking about the subject and your definitions in the Weekend Show. Have a great week!
I'm not a scalper, but if I see a good car it's mine. I have the mentality that, "If I don't pick up this car, I might never get the chance again. Buying it is off the table because I know and have seen the same thing reselling for ridiculous prices." If there's a lot of what I want, I won't take it all. Maybe 2 is enough for me, but I leave the rest for the other fellow collectors. Sometimes right after I buy I see a kid get excited to find what he's looking for. It makes me happy knowing I helped out someone else. I don't want to resell, just keep and collect. :)
@@nissan300zxtwinturbo2, I see nothing wrong with that plus, it also depends on how many are available. For instance I had just enough money a little over a week ago to pick up some action figures that I felt like I could afford. The store had three that I was after. Three different characters. One of the ones I really liked was left and I was really impressed with it's appearance and happy that someone left one for another fan. Another nice one had just two copies left so, I got just one and decided to leave the other one for another fan. I will not go after the other one no matter how much I'd like to have another one to customize unless they either get more in or it stays there after about a month. That will give other fans an opportunity to have a crack at that one which is fair and considerate.
It's hard to stop a scalper, but when I see them at the store with a pile of the same castings, I just grab from their pile since they so nicely sorted everything out for me.
Mattel doesn’t help the situation at all either, with the way inventory is distributed and quantity. They should know which models are in high demand and produce more, and increase the number of supers. Or have a direct way to purchase specific cars.
Exactly, word for word my opinion also. Nearly all licenced models are snapped up very quickly. Mattel knows this very well but they keep supply numbers for each model close to their chest. This frustrates buyers who think they may miss out on a model, so when they see them on the pegs they just go nuts and grab everyone. This is not scalping...its a psychological response to Mattel’s awful supply and distribution.
Pc Genjin If they produce more supers, they no longer become as desirable. They make regular versions so it's not like you can't get that casting. You want a super but don't want it to be as hard to acquire?
Pc Genjin-- If Mattel increased the number of supers, the people who presently buy all the supers would just buy all of those also, which doesn't solve the issue at all.
Why doesn't Mattel just wait until the end of the year and make a Holiday run of all the most popular models of the year in a super version and charge the 5 or 7 dollar premium price? make them in large quantity and everybody gets an awesome car and the scalpers get nothing. Mattel would actually be keeping the money they usually give to the scalpers.
4 years on, and this video rings more true than ever, my guy! I'm in the UK, and the new Sierra caused absolute havoc over here. People would take as many as they could find, and resold it for about $30 on eBay once they got home. I was blessed to find two of them before the hype really started, so I've got one carded and one loose. I've seen about three more but left them all for other people, even though I could've made bank off them. It just kills a bit of your love for the hobby, knowing other people do it for money rather than desire to find the new cars. Not to mention that it only takes one scalper to poison the well for a pretty large area. People often say "well you're not in my area, so stop complaining", but here's a thought experiment; in the UK, most of us live close to other cities, so it's realistic that a scalper could hit 2-3 cities and all the major towns in between within a couple of hours, especially if they drive for work. That'd be about 20 stores, and every one of those stores suddenly becomes a no-go zone for any of the decent castings. Then other collectors have to go even further away to get their cars, and they might feel like taking 3, 4, even 5 of the car, since it took so much time and effort to find in the first place. Suddenly you've got a situation where everyone is taking too much and fewer collectors can find what they want without paying ridiculous money to get it online. Yes, they have a bit of FOMO and they need to stop feeding into scalping, but they wouldn't be doing that in the first place if they could find just one in the store. I do have hope, though. Most of these good castings fly off the shelves like hotcakes, but Mattel definitely takes notice of that. They'll obviously keep releasing new colours of popular casts as it makes them more money, so eventually everyone will get at least one casting of a car they love, even if it's not the original first casting. At least that's my somewhat optimistic take on it, lol
Stop buying on the Bay, a dollar car is not worth $30. Some times the later casting & paint schemes are better anyway, & half the fun was finding on the anyway.
I agree with 5 being the limit before crossing over to hoarder land. I bought 5 matchbox charcoal escalades to use as security escorting my vips around. With my favorite castings, I'll buy 3. With 3, I keep 1 carded to display on my wall, 1 loose and clean in my collection and 1 loose to beat up on the track. 90% of the time, I'll buy 1 of each color of the castings I collect. I keep them loose and clean. If I mistakenly buy a duplicate, I give it to my kids or one of the neighborhood kids.
I’ve been on UA-cam since 2008 but was absent for quite some time. I’m slowly getting back to making videos and watching videos from other channels. I must say that I enjoy watching your videos. I appreciate that you consider customizers a good part of the diecast community. I am a collector and also a customizer. Thank you for all that you do. Keep up the great work. 👍👍👍

I got some comments from viewers on a video for buying 3 m2 super chase Datsun 510’s last month. Couple people said “you should’ve left 1 for another collector”. Dude, if I didn’t buy them, the next Collector will right? I bought them because I knew I was going to trade them for something else I don’t have. Did I scalp them? Some say yes, some say no. I like trading with other collectors so if I run into sought after Hot Wheels, I’m buying them.
Rivera's Hot Wheels Yeah Ive seen that video. In my opinion, it's not. They're hard to find and you did have intentions of helping other collectors out by trading them away
RC Bulldog - i see you point. I don’t care about what if the next guy buys them all. But it was also fun how I went about trading this. Again like i said, I don’t collect 1/24 scales so the thought of seeing what I would get for trade was my main reason why I bought them. Shit man, that day I spent $70 on these things lol. I’ve never spent that much on diecast. I was bombarded with offers. I declined 5 Supers! But at the end, I think we all won. They got that nice super chase and i got some cool pieces in trade out of them. BTW, that m2 1/24 57 Chevy Bel Air Chase with them flames, oooof! Super Hot piece congrats on finding that.
Rivera's Hot Wheels Yeah man the matte black and green flames, SWEET ! Finding it in the wild is so cool, but buying it online or a vendor market for twice the price just isn't the same. Cheers! Glad We ran into each other here and cleared this up a bit.
Buy stock not Hot Wheels cars if you want to make real money collectibles not where the big pay day of money is awaiting. Hot Wheels is fun but not when you have to pay crazy prices for new hot wheel releases.
I understand everyones struggle when it comes to scalping. We have a local guy here who travels literally 100 miles in every direction buying every hunt, Super or chase or popular casting he can. Sells them on his ebay page (even though he still has dozens of old hunt from years ago still there) never NEVER leaves anything behind. I no longer collect the hunts but haven't found one since November 17'
You explained the definition of scalper very well. In some case, some people will call you a scalper if you beat them to a super treasure hunt or any chase car in a store. If you buy 10 or 20 of the same car for customising or (like in my case) doing a police chase stop motion video, you are fine. But if your only intention is to grab every license car off the pegs to resell it at double, triple the price you are nothing but a jerk. The lamley group got exposed a few year ago because he sided with a scalper in las vegas in one of his topic.
I'm a true collector I've been collecting for 34 years I buy one casting par variation either tempos wheels or paint..or even different countries... I love Malaysia and Hong Kong castings. I'm just glad that hot wheels are still around after all these years I take great pride in my collection and it shouldn't matter how many castings of one or as many. Just please be fair on pricing...and it's not the same without the flame....
Great 12 mins knowledge shared on scalpers! Can't understand why buy same cars with same colour combo in this huge quantity.a customizer needs at max 4 same cars one for original and others for different stuff.
I know that JDM cars are not actually rare to find and didn't scalp a lot and there were no JDM scalpers until 2014 when the Datsun 510 wagon (mainline) was released meaning more scalpers especially JDM cars are going non-stop after the 510 wagon release
I think the most I have every bought of one car is 5 white F&F Supras. My Dad collects Supra because he owns one so I bought him one and me one but both were bent. Then I bought two sets of the F&F series just to have because i'm a big fan of the movies and one more to customize. Haven't sold or traded any of them
I agree with a lot of the arguments you're presenting about scalping. Although it's all relative; some people would consider it's scalping if you buy more than one car, although that's not the general rule. I usually buy 3-4 from the castings i really like (from the cheaper brands like Hot Wheels mainly), but not all the time as it can get expensive. Buying 10-20 samples of the same casting, if you're not customizing them, *then* it's scalping (stage 4?) for me. It's all relative really. Nice Video.
Great video on the topic of scalping! Personally, the perfect number is usually 3. One kept as carded, another as loose (to play) and lastly to display. Friends are the most important when collecting hotwheels I think. It was thank to other collector friends that I was able to get certain castings which I couldn’t even get previously! #saynotoscalpers
Very true.. I really hate the idiots who have too raid the Zamacs at Wal-Mart.. like when the 510 Wagon Zamac was released they were raiding the cases like crazy. I don't think any of them ever reached the pegs.. so I had too beat them too the punch, which I ended up doing on a couple of occasions.. I will also hit the dump bins and grab a bunch of the more coveted castings and put them on the pegs, but I would put them closer too the back so at least some people can at least have a chance too grab some.. other than that there's not much you can do..
5:10 i would travel back in time. not for the bugatti, but for the side drafts and ms-t suzukas *also i'm not selling my side drafts and ms-t suzukas* edit: I'm picking up way 2 fast and evil twin on the way
dear drifter very well said man im a customiser and i love making them.ONE DAY i ran into a scalper i was with my uncle and he was very the scalper gave 2 510 wagons .Also at the moment the jh2(japan historics 2)scalper trend is starting people take 3 sets than they a couple of sets to custom also they night buy a few and sell them from 60 to 100 dollars or 2 for 120 $$$$$. well this in newzealand other people as well as me are on the for historic life.good video
The problem with collecting errors is that most errors can be easily faked. I did buy a Batmobile with a very badly placed tampo, figured it would be more trouble than what it is worth to fake it.
3:48 That reminds me of the people who do the same stuff with actual cars, they buy them right now and keep them in storage in like a vacuum bubble so no dust gets on the paint just so they can sell them at an auction a decade from now.
I keep thinking about the idea of trading models with other people you mentioned. Couldnt it be your channel a way to communicate with other collectors and find the models we want? Imagine a monthly video were you help us advertise the models we are looking for and we would like to buy to the other subscribers for a fair price (or trade for another one, of course). 10K is a big community! Great video as always! Say no to scalpers!
Marc de la Cruz Hmm that would be an interesting idea, but it's quite hard to implement. If youtube made some sort of community feature here on my youtube, that might work
Yes, not easy. I was thinking of some sort of special "Say no to scalpers" monthly video were you could feature the subscribers comments asking for models. Of course this comments should be done as response to one particular video and featured on the next month one, as the Race Grooves host does on his weekend show: ua-cam.com/video/pYYidOeHDgI/v-deo.html Also a Twitter hashtag would do, but that wouldnt be as successful for sure.
@@DrifterD There is such a group on the RLC fan club page by mattel. Can trade with other folks. Scalpers in my opinion are those folks that buy more than say two supers. I typically buy one for my collection and IF I find another I will grab it to trade with another collector for a car I missed. Fair I'd say. But scalpers are at the same stores every day when the stores open, they take ALL the supers, and ALL the reg th, hurry home and immediately post up on ebay at a substantial profit.. leaving none for anyone else.
I like Derek Smith but he is a stage 4 scalper...he has to have people on pay role to have the bead on so many stores. I almost thought my son would never find a STH due to the local stage 4s but I randomly found an untouched display case on a cart at a Walgreens and he pulled a UC Bone Shaker out of it which was amazing. I will admit that I will buy every single STH and TH I run into but I give them away to friends. And at the same time they give me STH and TH they find...hell I just received a STH 2000 GT-R
I actually found a nice guy who sells hotwheel cars. He has lots of the same cars. But guess what? He's the opposite of a scalper. He actually sell hotwheel cars for very cheap. 3x cheaper. I respect him.
I totally agree. I have grabbed multiples of several casting and I'm in the process of trading or giving all my extras away. My new rule of thumb is to no longer collect what I can't display on my walls in a normal collection. I'm also quitting any purchases off of eBay. SAY NO TO SCALPERS!!!
I think there is one kind of scalper that aren't entirely evil. They are the ones who get region limited cars and ship or bring them in from other countries and only sell at a price that helps them cover their cost and don't make a big profit. Or maybe they are a kind of stage 1 scalper that we so desperately need.
Stage 1 the hook up artist. (Hooks people up cars they want) Stage 2 the caster (love that casting) Stage 3 the optimist (I buy this hoping it goes up in value.)
Hi Drifter, Sort of stumbled on your video of scalpers by accident. Understand totally what you are saying but I've bought tickets to sports events from scalpers where I've paid more than face value but the thing is, I did'nt have to go queue at 4am, 5am, whatever time to get those tickets in the first place. Same as Hotwheels cars maybe the scalper has travelled to many different stores spending hours searching for these cars he knows will make him money. Whilst I don't sort of condone scalping, on the other hand I'm happy to pay whatever it costs for something I so greatly desire. Whether it be sports or concert tickets, or hotwheels cars if I collected them. Cheers, liked your video.
What I don't like is when someone buys only one car in a set. Making it impossible to buy a full set, then you see them later with them at crazy prices.
0:34 I once met a weird scalper in a toyshop and i was frightened.I was short back then and he was very tall. While i was looking for some hotwheels in the clear vertical cylinder dumpbin(we have those in turkey)That man came and pushed me away and said these are all mine and bought alot of them i was scared back in the day because i was just a kid back then

I know that JDM cars are not actually rare to find and didn't scalp a lot and there were no JDM scalpers until 2014 when the Datsun 510 wagon (mainline) was released meaning more scalpers especially JDM cars are going non-stop after the 510 wagon release
Love your Videos i never scalp and I never will the most i ever get are 3! Great video and very informative!
Nice explanation. Can't wait to see your next video
Nice Video.
JohnSTF72 Agreed with your points man. Thanks for watching 👍
I wish i was like u so many cars
Congratz on 10k
im a ford mustang person too
Yooo!! #roadto10k hey drifter thanks for sharing about scalpers I learnt a lot bro! And the dislikes were the idiots (level 4 scalpers)
Emre Adam Thanks adam 😎 Yup probably LOL
Great vid love you,bye the way you are my favorite youtuber
5:10 i would travel back in time. not for the bugatti, but for the side drafts and ms-t suzukas
*also i'm not selling my side drafts and ms-t suzukas*
edit: I'm picking up way 2 fast and evil twin on the way
Happy #10kSubss Drifter Congrats!!!!!
5:08 i think that is a good idea
That is the best scalper in my opinion
I buy one or two cars as souvenirs from every place I go
Is funny to choose one car from an ocean
another great vídeo. thanks for your opinion and knowledge. I agree.. .. say no to scalpers!
Indeed! Say no to scalpers!
Cool and informative video thumbs up.
I like ford Mustangs too Drifter D
#DrifterGang almost 10k bro
Congrats for 10KKK!!!!!!!
dear drifter very well said man im a customiser and i love making them.ONE DAY i ran into a scalper i was with my uncle and he was very the scalper gave 2 510 wagons .Also at the moment the jh2(japan historics 2)scalper trend is starting people take 3 sets than they a couple of sets to custom also they night buy a few and sell them from 60 to 100 dollars or 2 for 120 $$$$$. well this in newzealand other people as well as me are on the for historic life.good video
Iv been collecting for couple years and been watching your UA-cam videos. Could you do a video on Error cars that are also collectable
The problem with collecting errors is that most errors can be easily faked. I did buy a Batmobile with a very badly placed tampo, figured it would be more trouble than what it is worth to fake it.
Interesting video Drifter! Keep up the good work. Btw I'm so excited for 10k special!
But scalpers are at the same stores every day when the stores open, they take ALL the supers, and ALL the reg th, hurry home and immediately post up on ebay at a substantial profit.. leaving none for anyone else.
yep, i buy all of one kind of casting and none of others, i rarely resell but i will trade from time to time
Great dissection of the word "scalpers".
Orion-Fine-Art Thanks :)
I'm a new stage 2 scalper cause the 1986 toyota van is my favourite hotwheels "car" and also my favourite actual car.
YAAAYYYYYYYAYAYAYAYYA!!!! CONGRATS Drifter on 10K
Great video today #saynotoscalpers
Lillie Bot Not quite there yet, but yea thanks :)
Hey Drifter, when will you upload another peg hunting video. Missing them hahah. Also handy information, very detailed. Thank you
I actually found a nice guy who sells hotwheel cars. He has lots of the same cars. But guess what? He's the opposite of a scalper. He actually sell hotwheel cars for very cheap. 3x cheaper. I respect him.
Scalper, someone who gets the cars first.
Awesome video drifter, good luck on 10k
You're almost at 10k subs!!!
When I first started collecting. I hardly bought hotwheels in pairs bcuz my plan was not to open them but now I know to buy them in pairs.
When the new Forza Nissan Silvia S15 arrive here in the Philippines I'll buy 3. Cuz that's my dream car
Guitarded And Broke Props to you my man 👍👌😎
You speak like a young Jackie Chan when pissed haha LOL peace.
The point: You like you buy it, you don't like it you leave it, don't buy something you don't like, done as simple as that
I think there is one kind of scalper that aren't entirely evil. They are the ones who get region limited cars and ship or bring them in from other countries and only sell at a price that helps them cover their cost and don't make a big profit. Or maybe they are a kind of stage 1 scalper that we so desperately need.
Good luck for 10k and I hope you've planned something super cool.
Eyyyyyy another video from my favorite hot wheels UA-camr :D
Filipino po ako :)
Andrei Gillo Mabuhay po!
Great vid! Congrats in 10k!
theres nothing but xraycers and fun park cars in stores in my area
*Thanks, scalpers.*
Stage 1 the hook up artist. (Hooks people up cars they want)
Stage 2 the caster (love that casting)
Stage 3 the optimist (I buy this hoping it goes up in value.)
Kingsize Customs Hmmm those names might work hehe
Good information drifter
Cool video, nice explanation because I never knew what a scalper was :)
I take only one
Loose one sometimes two for carded
Interesting information, and gd luck for your next vid preparations
Steve Dingman Oh man I know right?? It happens all the time :(
Aaaaaaaaa 10.001 subs i am so proud of you!
This really helps. Thanks drifter!
MAybe a video about HOARDERS who hoard everything for themselves. Also creating artificial scarcity.
