    Whaaat?! Didn't know an official English version of the currently best version of Dragon Quest 1 was worked on.
    EDIT: I see now. It's the Torneko game, not the mainline games. Weird they'd localize that and not the mainlines games 1,2,3 which already had NES translations they could've re-used.

    First off RIP GI! Man I miss print media. My earliest memories were video games and computer entertainment, then you had :EGM, Gamepro, Die Hard GameFan, etc and now all gone.
    Whats crazy I literally just renewed my GameStop membership where they basically said GI just came with that as of maybe they were preparing for them to close, and making it seem like a bonus option to the pro membership.

    As an art piece, I believe it should be shared. A lot of hard work went into it and it should be appreciated. As a collector, I also see the significance in owning a physical copy. The physical is still valuable and is rightfully treated as such, but don't deprive the world of beautiful craftsmanship. It would be like finding a previously unknown Picasso and hiding it in a closet. If you don't like Picasso, insert your own version of an artist and it still applies.

    • @chrisnelson2948
      @chrisnelson2948 Місяць тому +1

      It is being apprecuated, by the guy that spent 50k on it. It's no diferent from art work being locked away in private collection only for the owner to appreciate. You get to do that when you're willing to pay for it.

    I feel like this year is a dark time of video games.
    I hated how they pushed digital when I asked for physical paper. The last one was a few months ago for Dead Tide 2.
    I would probably never play that game since I'm not a fan of the series, but it should have been preserved even if the archive back up is in an institute with limit access to the public.

    I really dont think the value of an unreleased translated game would be drastically impacted by dumping the rom, I never bought that as the reason these collectors don't dump their rare prototypes. Are there a bunch of examples of a prototype/unreleased game that was going for tens of thousands, and then dropped in price after the owner dumped the rom? I don't think so, maybe there is.

  • @ZimLuvGigan

    With collectors buying these unreleased games and keeping them the collectors makes those unreleased games a trophy item. It is more for bragging rights. It will not serve any other reason then for them to say they have it. I can understand both side of the debate of wanting to share the game with the world and not sharing it to preserve the game. But the main thing a game was intended for is to be played and developers not finishing games and private collectors getting them. It turns the game into a paperweight just taking up space gathering dust. Even if it is never played the game could eventually stop working. I have seen cartridges from Nintendo and Sega that they do not work anymore from not being played or getting moisture in the cartridge or the chip goes bad. So if the cartridge never gets backed up. The next time it goes up for sale it may not even work and be a brick. Most developer cartridges were made to be written and deleted and rewritten . So the save files can get corrupted. That can be the case if it is a rewritable cartridge.

    Speaking as an Actual Archivist, meaning I have a Masters Degree in Library and Information Science, I just wanted to say that Madlittlepixel's take is the correct take; what was once simply annoying has become a legitimate issue, that being the overuse of the word "preservation" as a convenient excuse to legitimize an individual's selfish desires, to constantly collect and consume, period. If you go to any accredited library or archive in the world, you will know that not every single thing is freely available due to a confluence of reasons, everything from respecting the wishes of those who donated a particular item or simply following best practices that have been firmly established by the library & archival profession for countless years. What disgusts me the most are the folks who are the most worked up about such things could be directing those energies towards real problems in the world, but as we all know, this is another summer that is setting record high temperatures and next year's will probably break them.
