The speed 1 was the shoe that unlocked so much for my running back in 2020, I’d tried the Pegasus turbo & zoom fly’s and was so underwhelmed, at that time I was relatively new to running so just assumed it was me, then I got a pair of speed 1’s and it was that eureka moment, I remember laughing out loud when I finished a run and looked at my watch to see the paces I never thought I could achieve. The Pro 1’s were the same so I’ve been loyal(ish) to saucony since. I had that same laugh out loud moment when I ran in the Elite 1 so I’m looking forward to the Elite 2 but probably will wait until my Elite 1’s fade. From what I’ve heard about the incredi-Run foam is that it’s “non-nuetonian” in that it changes it’s characteristics based on the forces applied to it - so for an easy run it could feel soft and cushioned but when the pace picks up it firms up and provides a more responsive feel - not suggesting it could be used as a daily trainer but it’s certainly going to be interesting when it lands. Hopefully Saucony send you a pair of Elite 2’s for review 😜
I absolutely loved the Speed 1 and 2. Versions 3 and 4 were a drastic departure and just plain blah for me. Unless I hear version 5 is back to the feel of versions 1 and 2, then Saucony has lost me. The mutant color is not going to entice me as it is probably just an application of a favorite lipstick.
The evolution of the speed series has parallels with the novablast. The NB developed a cult following as a versatile shoe with some top end performance but the latest iteration is just a bog standard daily shoe. At least the speed still performs.
@@chrispugh6161 I dont understand the difference between 1 and 2. I love the elite 1, because of the agressive feeling I have in them, like I can only speed up. Do you think there is the same feeling with the Elite 2, or because of the softness, I will just sink in the shoe ?
Saucony guy, here, been using all the Ride models (since version 8) and later Pro 2, Plus and 3. I must admit the shoes mentioned above are really good. Unfortunately, grip in wet conditions (aka running in the U.K.) started to be decent from the release of the Pro 3. Other brands (such as Puma) made a very smart decision in offering shoes that prioritize this feature. Of course, except the Fast-Trac. 😉
For marathon distance running, the Pro 4 takes some beating especially 3:15 - 4:30hr finish time where comfort and stability is needed. ‘Fresh feet’ at the end, the legs however…😜😎
Great content as always, Andy! Love the run down. I’m a newer runner, but I did grab a pair of Speed 2’s on clearance and I still love them -probably 3-400 miles on them. But yeah you know my thoughts on Pro 4’s… we’ll see how those Elite 2’s stack up. I prefer the firmer side for race day as well. Cheers!
Never been the biggest Saucony guy for some reason, their designs just never resonated with me all that much. But can't deny the greatness of the Endorphin Speed back in the day. The Endorphin Elite is also one of my favorite Racing Shoes ever. I'll definitely try to grab a pair of the v2 as soon as I can. It's 300€ so better be good...
I think you should definitely try it… you’re a fan of a wide range of supershoes whereas I definitely prefer a mid/firmer shoe so it’ll be interesting to hear your thoughts!
Loved my Endorphin Speed 2s but hated the 3s and didnt bother with the 4. But my Triumph 22s have been incredible for Easy Runs and ever since using them I've had NO calf or achilles issues. Durable too! For racing im a Nike/Adidas man though.
The speed 1 is goat. So simple design. Everything was clean. Saucony tinker too much, made it wide, make it clunky, silly wing plates, stupid grooves, the new plate is now ribbed just over engineered when it doesn't need it. Even the outsole is less durable. Trying to do too much
I think you hit the nail on the head... "trying to do too much"... simplicity is key when it comes to tempo / speed shoes, dont overthink it, the speed 1's were perfect the way they were!
Great video, thank you! I am buzzing to get the Elite 2, I never tried the Elite 1 as I favoured the AF3s. Speed 1 and 2 were outstanding and still run in them occasionally after 100s of miles of use 🙌🏽
The pro 4s are my first super shoes and I love them but have nothing to compare them to.Did notice my ankles getting a bit tired with the slightest camber in the road so think I definitely don’t need anything less stable. Love my kinvara 14s as well!!
Thanks for this Andy and I will look forward to hearing how you get on with the Elite 2 because as you know like you I have been a huge fan of the Elite and found that I think my preference is for a firmer foam over recent years. I had 3 pairs of the Pro 3 and have found them amazing training shoes for intervals or tempo sessions but a bit lacking on race day perhaps due to the softer foam. I also had just the one pair of the Speed 2 which I loved and I agree with you that it would be great if Saucony released a shoe more like that. Other than the Alphafly v1 which I couldn't get past the arch issues all of my best runs have come in firmer plated race shoes in recent years - The Endorphin Elite or the asics Metaspeed Series - so that tells me something. My favourite trainers from last year are the Brooks Hyperion Max 2 and the asics Tri Noosa 16 (again firmer shoes with a little bit of cush but definitely not sink in and bounce type shoes). I currently have that box-fresh pair of Elite's and the Sky Paris with just 39 miles on them so no need to rush into any race day shoe updates 🙂 I do maybe think that I should have opted for the Edge Paris rather than the Sky as feel that would have been closer in feel to the Elite than the Sky Paris. If we get bad weather in Boston though I will probably run in the Sky Paris over the Elite and may opt for them anyway as wondering if they may offer the legs a little more protection over that undulating course? I too am worried about have Saucony ruined the Elite 2 for those of us who loved the original Elite, but I have plenty of time to see what others think before hopefully trying them or something else.
I had speed 3’s - loved them so bought pro 3’s and love them also. Speed 3’s are retired but pro 3’s are saved for race days and still have a couple of half’s and I’m planning to run London marathon in them. I have bought speed 4’s and have been slightly disappointed- just doesn’t feel as fast on foot for me as the 3.
Huge fan of the Endorphin Pro 3, running through the last pair now… not sure which brand/shoe to use to replace it as the Pro 4 doesn’t sound like that will be it 😢
Genuine question here... On various running forums when the subject of supportive daily shoes comes up, replies will regularly be flooded with recommendations for the Saucony Tempus, yet they never get coverage in the media like the shoes in this video. I use the original Tempus as my dailies and they are fantastic, meanwhile the Tempus 2 came out last year. The pair I have in use at the minute have done well over 450km and are still going strong. They are comfortable, responsive and lightweight (roughly equivalent to the emdorphin speed 4's for a stability shoe) and feature a good chunk of high end pwrrunpb foam. If so many peoples personal experience of the Tempus is so good, why does the media never seem to want to cover them? It baffles me.
Speed 1s were great for tempo and speed work, really enjoyed the 3s for every day training but werent as fast as the 1s. Had marathon PBs in the Endo Pro 3s at 3.08 and 3.02. Looking forward to the Speed 5 🫡
Downgrade the line so they secure sales on endorphin elite… I’m a 2:55 marathoner and I’ll tell you the pro 3 it’s better than the elite . No such a reason to pay that more amount of money for something inferior. Pro3 it’s a masterpiece.
Yeah lots of companies realise they are onto a "winner" with a shoe so they have to water down other versions so sales go up on the "main shoe"... I am sure thats why they nerfed the novablast a bit, because they wanted the superblast to shine! Same goes across all brands really
I like the Pro4, but haven’t raced it yet, so will use it for Alicante half. Will probably go for the Elite 2 to break my alphafly habit. I’ve had 2 pairs of Speed 3s, so will get the Speed 5 for training as the colourway is great, and ultimately that’s the most important thing 😂
Having started in stability shoes, Saucony has a special place in my heart because of the old Guide and Tempus. The Elite 1 is my favorite race shoe, and I am a little nervous about the 2 being too unstable for me. I am hoping the Pro 5 goes in the direction of the Elite 1 (Doctors of Running hinted that Pro 5 is gonna be a snappier shoe), and so us lovers of Elite 1 don't get completely lost. I don't think Saucony should discontinue pwrn hg just because they have incredirun now, it is still a great foam.
Ah really? well I hope they are right... fingers crossed it will be snappier! PWRRUN HG worked 10/10 in the elite 1.. but blending it in the pro4 just didnt work... i'd love to see the pro 5 use full HG with a plate!
Pro 4 is an absolute banger for me. Ran an lot of pb's in it. Speed 4 i got also but used it due to weather conditions up till now just on the treadmill, but seems to be a speedy daily Trainer. Speed 3 where a bit more poppy. After 900km i had to retire them. Used them always for speeddays or racing (did 2 Marathons in them)
I personally think that the Elite suited you so well as you are a bigger heavier runner as many people found them fast but very uncomfortable over longer distances. Saucony will want to optimise the shoe for more runners so this is where you miss out. I had the speed one and used it for over 400 miles and to be honest it was a good shoe but I felt it wasn’t worth the hype it generated. I think if most people put a pair on now they would probably be disappointed in the result. Absence makes the heart grow stronger and at the time it was an outlier but not anymore.
Although previews came out end of 2024 I think it's a 2025 shoe - the Ride 18 is a banger 😂 like many, I've been a cult-like Saucony follower since the Speed 1 but my new years running resolution is getting 'back to basics' with shoes and the Ride 18 is excellent!
Before my injuries, my rotation were Speed 1 and Endorphin Shift or Hoka Clifton. The latter two were used interchangeably, thus I basically had a two shoes rotation. I'd sometimes add in other shoes just for the fun of it, like the Ride, NB 1080, Rincon, Adidas Boston, Brooks Ghost, Kinvara etc. but those three (Speed, Ship and Clifton) were may main ones. I used the Speed for both my faster pace workouts and for races. I felt the carbon plate on the Pro would have been too aggressive for speeds, weight and level. I'll always have a soft spot for Saucony, since the Kinvara was my first real running shoes and the shoes I ran my first Half Marathon in.
The shifts were massively underrated... loads of people hated them as they were bricks but I found my shift v3 to be a great mileage shoe, they worked so well alongside the speeds!
Yeah, I think the world of exciting shoes and foams made us forget what makes a good daily trainer. I think that’s why shoes like Novablast 5 are not having the same reception as previous iterations among content creators. I bring this example up because I think you seem to get it, despite being an experience faster runner. For me a good daily trainer is one you can log mile after mile after mile and have fresh legs to do it again the next day. I agree, the Shift, I only ran in the 1st gen, was vastly underrated. Hoka Clifton is another one. Might be a bit flat for experienced runners, and I wouldn’t blame you if you aren’t particularly fond of the Clifton, but for me it’s another one that just promotes those faster recovery periods.
I love my Endorphin Pro 3, although it does give me a little bit of forefoot pain. However, the Pro 4 and Speed 4 were not good at all for me. Not enough cushion under the forefoot and i didnt really get any pop from the foam or plate. very strange
I was never really interested on Saucony but heard the Speed all the time here on youtube and the comments. 2nd hand i got new pairs of Triumph 20 Runshield for wet and winter and Triumph 21 for summer. Didn't get to run in them yet (besides at home in the living room). Now i took for little money someone elses rotation of speed 3 + pro 3 + axon 3, which have all km on them, but aren't through or dead yet. Seem to fit me very well and are someone sympatic to me. I now ordered a Speed 2 2nd hand with 180k on them. Since you all said speed 1+2 were really speedy and speed 3+4 were more stable daily trainers. So i guess or better: i hope the speed 2 are really speedy - for your all sakes 😄 Lets see if this will even be my 5-10k “race“ shoe - competing with Mach 6 and DN3 :)
Agree about the Speed: the Speed 1 is still one of the greats. Since then it's become a bit of a yawn: has been replaced by the New Balance Rebel v4 and Puma Deviate Nitro 3 in our rotations. The Tempus though is great. Also I'm interested in the Trainer as a few flat footers seemed to like the Kinvara Pro.
What Saucony is pulling off with the Tempus is a rip-off. To demand the full price again just because of an upper update for a shoe that is almost 3 years old is disingenuous. On the other hand, Adidas Puma is more than fair, see for example Magnify 2 Tech.
I finally gave into the Speed hype train for the Speed 4, whoops, its now spoiled the brand for me, I just felt it was too soft and bent too much, admittedly I had spent the year training in the Superblast, so most things would have felt bendy! It kind of makes me want to find a pai of speed 2 or 3s as my wife loved them and they feel much more rigid when conducting that ‘technical’ test of the bend it in your hands!!!
Haha that’s ok, I know they worked for some people, but the overwhelming feedback I’ve had is they’ve been a let down… if they work for you then that’s the main thing 👊
I liked the speed4, but that plate gave me peroneal tendon issues so it doesn't surprise me that they're changing what was essentially a stupid idea. Really hoping 2025 will be a year where brands take away all their stability silliness they obsessed about in 2024.
Oh wow, that’s not good! I fear the stability silliness is hear to stay for a while, if you listen to the marketing teams talk about their shoes it’s all about appealing to a wider audience…
the market in general is still going the opposite way further away from my persoanl liking, higher stack, softer midsoles, plates in many shoes.....nothing i really like for the last year my raste for running shoes fits more to adidas and Hoka....hard times for Saucony
@ i prefer somewhat firmer shoes, so at the moment the Hoka Arahi is my favorite Hoka, not a bestseller but a durabal stable shoe, the Mach 6 is softer, but still a good ride. Regarding plated shoes i still love my Rocket x V1............. and unfortunately long ago discontinued my all time best Hoka the Huaka. Back in the day i stocked up on those and still have several parirs i run in
What Saucony is pulling off with the Tempus is a rip-off. To demand the full price again just because of an upper update for a shoe that is almost 3 years old is disingenuous. On the other hand, Adidas Puma is more than fair, see for example Magnify 2 Tech.
Your honest reviews are what keep me coming back! I Appreciate the balanced take, Andy! 💯
Thank you!

Honestly the Pro4 are more forgiving than the Pro3 the last kms on a marathon when you start to fade away. So I prefer them (47years, 75kg, 03:19 PB).
Thats some good praise for the 4s! great to hear!
It's so nice to trust your reviews everytime, honest and fair
Thank you 🙏
Like the Pro 4 much more than Pro 3. not fussed about the Speed 4. Preferred the 3!!!

It does run parallel, thats a good comparison! Although I do like the novablast 5 much better than the 4!
@TheFODRunner fair enough. I prefer the 4, but I like firmer shoes.
Yeah Novablast 1 and Endorphin Speed 1 were the absolute shiz that year.
I managed to get the pre release Endorphin Elite 2, ran 2 PBs in them, but nothing like the Elite 1!
Oh wow! Now that’s valuable feedback for everyone, thanks!
@ 👍🏻 very soft foam to touch and walk on, but it seems to firm up when running faster. I am going to try them over 5k tomorrow night.

Lets see if this will even be my 5-10k “race“ shoe - competing with Mach 6 and DN3 :)
Ah super, glad you've been able to pick up some pairs, I really hope you enjoy the 2s and you feel like you can race in them!
My speed 3’s were excellent. I found with the 4’s they’re better at a faster pace.
I’ve had the speed 2,3 and 4 and the 4s are my favourite but it seems I’m in the minority 😂 top video as always Andy!
I fear the stability silliness is hear to stay for a while, if you listen to the marketing teams talk about their shoes it’s all about appealing to a wider audience…
the market in general is still going the opposite way further away from my persoanl liking, higher stack, softer midsoles, plates in many shoes.....nothing i really like
for the last year my raste for running shoes fits more to adidas and Hoka....hard times for Saucony
Yes it does seem to be going in that direction... plus adding carbon plates into daily training, just bizarre!
I feel the same.I really like Adidas streamline and nimble designs. Not sure about Hoka, they are just getting higher and higher stacked
