I live in Kalasin and have the same standard of living as I had in Norway for $900 in Thailand as I had in Norway for $4300

Thanks for the video & sharing, if I am going to retire in Thailand which in my early 50's now, I need to have at least $3K in monthly pension & at least $100K extra savings for emergency, going out only 3x a week with a regular Thai lady with no LDs & barfines. That won't happen until late 2025 or early 2026.

No. 1000 a month is not enough at all!
For the normal person who has a normal job in Europe, let's say in the country I come from, he will earn maybe €50,000 a year, of which he can save maybe €5,000 to €8,000 a year. I strongly recommend investing these €5,000 in shares rather than leaving them in a savings account. Spread as widely as possible across major indices, so that after 20 to 30 years he can really have a fortune that will always make it possible to build up a decent living in Thailand alongside his pension.

Why is 1000 the magic number. I’m moving to Bangkok in Jan.
Better question would be moving from the USA to Thailand will be about 60% less.
I probably spend around 3.5-4k a month here and I’m single.
Why is 1k the magic number.

I have a theory on why $1,000 is often mentioned as a gold standard amount. I think that it is because many Westerners who move to places like Thailand are Retired, and living on pensions. And $1,000 per month seems to be a ballpark figure for many Social Security retirement benefits, although this figure will vary wildly depending on the Individual.

Because if your spending 2-3k on average in the US you can get similar here in Thailand for 60% less 🇹🇭 plus it seems to be the bar bones here in Thailand. What’s your thoughts

It's looked at like a gold standard for investments. When your portfolio can pay you $1,000 a month, it basically means nothing while you still slave away in the west, because you could not quit your job and live on that in your 30's-50's yet. $300,000 invested for a safe 4% withdrawal (so as to not deplete the total), is only $12,000 per year, or $1,000 a month. Even with $100k in cash, you'd be unable to retire early in the west. You would burn through $100k living frugally in only 3-5 years. I like the $1,000 a month vids because that is the bottom end for what most people say to have. Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines, Malaysia.... $1,000 a month minimum to survive with a mediocre lifestyle. (that mediocre lifestyle is still close to jungles, national parks, unbelievable beaches, scooter excursions, and other things that are quite affordable to do for recreation. In the west, everything is overpriced, and we are locked into careers that prevent us from travel. A $300k portfolio could pay you this $1,000 a month forever. That means a $600k portfolio could pay $2,000 a month, and so on. $1000 is also easy to look at by daily income if you are a side hustler like myself. We tend to only think how much our assets have to be, to pay us out many years down the road, when if we can just find a laptop side hustle that pays us $34 per day 365 days a year, we are making $1,000 a month. Ask yourself if you'd be motivated to turn that side hustle into $70 per day while working fulltime on some shit career in the west, or while already living on $1,000 per month in paradise. $1,000 a month is only a foot in the door.
