  • Part 2 of the video testing how easily air rifle pellets get damaged.
i used the airmaks katran to shoot some comparison groups of fresh vs damaged jsb exact express then compared them against a budget bsa pellet

Nicely done 👍 I'm sure that running some of those lightly damaged pellets through a re sizer would give some excellent groups.

You're probably right... something to try down the line I guess.
I guarantee though that them rumbled ones, you wouldn't have thought to size them.they looked fine by eye. Most of us would have just put it down to a bad batch. Dunno interesting though..

Love this type of video. Some great info and surprising results. Had some shocking pellets being delivered (ebay from a fishing tackle shop) with only a paper envelope, needless to say tins where dented and pellets bashed up. I complained and suggested they use some foam and bubble wrap next time, they sent replacements with a little bubble wrap and the tins where still dented. I told them I could not leave a good feedback so they refunded me but must still be sending pellets out the same way.

It's frustrating how some retailers are oblivious to how they are sending fragile items.
It was a surprise and still I've more questions than answers 😆

    Interesting results!
I can now use the second group to explain why I cringe when I see someone throwing a pellet tin on the table before shooting haha

Perhaps you should try some new BSA elites I have some they are really shiny clean pellets and although I can only shoot at 15 m in my garden they give five pence groups as easily as any other pellet I put through. They are through a BSA barrel so that may mean something.

I’m a fan of BSA pellets myself, and can’t understand the hatred shown towards any pellet that isn’t considered ‘premium’ these days. When I started shooting in the 80’s I’d buy whatever was cheapest in the shop at the time. Usually Eley Wasps, Lanes Bulldog or Marksman. Never had a problem and was taking down corvids at 40 yards with these pellets through a very cheap Baikal .177 break barrel using stock open sights.
I also put the majority of my shots through at unexceptional distances, so I don’t need to spend nigh on twenty quid for a tin to get competition grade accuracy. The only high end pellets I own are tins given to me by gun shops as part of a ‘sweetener’ deal when buying a new rifle. 😊

Excellent geek-out! I guess a question is 'how damaged are the pellets once they leave the barrel?' After probing, blowing (?!) rifling and choking, the skirts will have undergone a lot of 'correction.' There might be some air leakage (so velocity variance) which might cause elevation inconsistency... My gut feeling is that head/weight distribution is less visible but very significant at longer range. That almost entirely comes down to manufacturing: swaging accuracy and lead/antimony consistency.

Use a 6.5mm audio jack to reshape the pellet skirt and you're good to go. Also works on harder lead mixtures.

the surprising bit of that for me is the pellets that didn't look damaged but gave a larger group, it shows you can't always see the damage

Honestly mate,if I'd given you that tin out the lathe, you would have been none the wiser. They were the pellets that didn't get dropped that I used for the test.

Really interesting and I was very surprised by the BSA’s. I would certainly be very keen to see the same experiment with a different barrel 👍 Woody.

I'm planning a sub 5 quid a tin pellet test. Probably dust the 9015 off and use that.
But I've a few other bits to do in the meantime.
I've got a full target stock build planned but work is making that a bit of a stretch right now.so might put the s200 up against the katran and 9015... that'll be one to watch 😆

If your up for another test could you wash and re-lube a sample of the lathe rumbled tin and also wash/lube a sample from the good tin to see if that makes and difference, or potentially fixes the rumbled ones.

Doesn’t the loading of the pellet help round out the bent skirts

Yo, love to know your thoughts on Katran c for HFT. Accurate enough ?

    • @tillysgunstocks
      @tillysgunstocks  4 місяці тому

Hi mate, it's proving pretty accurate overall but I had Initially planned to use it as an hft rig but it really isn't the ideal layout for hft and doesn't particularly like the cold either. There's plenty of much better options if it's an all out hft rig you're after. It's a great lightweight pest control rig though..
