    When I first started to learn all those decades ago I used to wonder why soloist were going from one end of the fretboard to the other. I thought that they were being flashy, but then realised that they only probably knew one pattern and were using that. Of course due to harmonics the same note sounds, the tone if you like, different when played at different locations.

    Great job John, enjoyed this and learned a lot about playing over the chordal changes, cracking sound as always. Is it magic ? No its just you, thank you for all your hard work in making these videos to teach your undoubtable skills and knowledge to the masses by example and unlocking the age old mysteries of the fret board. Superb video.

    love the way you've established a musical motif,even in a "one take" solo...another great lesson that'll take time to sink into the brick!

    I know all the pentatonic positions, but... If a song is in the key of C... I just stay in that key for the whole song..using all the pentatonic positions in C.
    So if the song went C, Gm, D... I'm playing over everything using C pentatonic.
    I have learned what works and what doesnt from just doing it for so long, and I throw in notes from outside the scale too, but generally I stay with the pentatonic scale of the root/key.
    Playing over the changes... or superimposing the chord scales as they go by and playing within them is something I need to learn.
    Thanks for the cool lesson!

    Interesting lesson john. This is very different to how i think, I learned the same way as Brian May David Gilmour and some others did. instead of seeing the chord changes as scales, i saw it as chord shapes over a respected pentatonic scale the key is in. for example in A minor position 1, id play away, then when for example D minor arrives, i will visualize the D minor chord within that pentatonic position. In this case it would be the A rooted shape so i'd use the notes there and emphasize them while that chord is being played. The clever thing about this, is that you notice most of the notes fit exactly into the pentatonic shape and you can get out of the scale very easily as you can put emphasis on the minor 3rd and also the 7 and it still works wonderfully and can really make the progression flow. After a while, you memorize where the notes are for a chord in any key in that position quickly. It does take learning the CAGED system though, for me though it killed 2 birds with one stone, as i learned different inversions which helped my rythm playing, then helped me become more melodic with lead playing too.

    • @tyroneholmes6354
      @tyroneholmes6354 5 років тому

      Hey @RagingDragonBlues. I'm new to improv and currently trying to decide between the system in the video and the caged thing you describe! Problem is is that I keep jumping between to two and end up learning nothing. But I see the merit in both but I also like the way you say it helps with chord tones and basically keeping the scale. Is this easy to do and do you recommend the caged system more than this change the scale method? I mean as in total knowledge potential from each system?

    • @ghfdt368
      @ghfdt368 5 років тому

      @@tyroneholmes6354 yes there is potential from both. I personally think both sound different and both are worth learning I just very rarely use the scale swapping method. I'd say CAGED is more beneficial in its uses as you learn new chord voicings on the neck and it sounds more melodic than scales. Sure scales can be melodic but often it entails winging it and hoping you find good notes. With caged shapes they are right there for you. So it depends what you want to learn. Scales will give you options but the CAGED system give you more focused melodic playing.

    • @JRobsonGuitar
      @JRobsonGuitar  5 років тому +1

      Er... Chaps... This IS the CAGED system that I'm showing in this video. By superimposing the Dm shape over an Am pentatonic pattern, (and focusing on the Dm notes) you are changing that Am pentatonic into Dm pentatonic.

      That's the point... You're using pentatonic scales to play in & out of the tonality shifts. Many songs have chord progressions like this so playing multiple scales on the fly is a great skill to have

    I don't really understand the finger thing for finding the root note.

    • @JRobsonGuitar
      @JRobsonGuitar  5 років тому +1

      In a 1st position pentatonic shape, your index finger (on 6th string) tells you what the minor name of the scale is, and your 4th finger tells you the major name of the scale.
