Gordon’s lyrics are always breathtaking. His vocals were beautiful and haunting. His guitar style was uniquely his own. He was a treasure and will be greatly missed by those of us who were there. Thank God music can be preserved for new generations
Hey great reaction. This is about his divorce and it really breaks a heart. Sundown is a great song of his too. RIP Gordon, one of my favorite artists. I love how you said we have to keep them alive thru their music. ❤
Biz, I was deeply touched by your opening remarks of kindness and respect for the passing of artists and thinking of their families. You have a big heart and big soul too. I'm an old, old man with a disease that steals memories daily. All my friends, family, sports heroes, and musicians are slowly passing away. You are here for us, bringing and saving music that's often lost in another space and time. Your hard work is saving more than just old music. You're saving memories of life, saving music that's forgotten, and bringing light into the darkness that this world is sadly seeing. Thank You Big Soul Biz, thank you so very much.
Thank you for your sensitive, thoughtful reaction to my favorite heartbreaking love songs. Gordon's voice is clear, beautiful with a lovely vibrato, but it's his lyrics that get me everytime. I have a CD of his greatest hits and played it over and over when I heard he had passed. God bless your beautiful soul, Gordon 💔
Gordon Lightfoot was the first artist I ever saw in concert, at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, 1976. I was 14, and it wasn't "cool" among my contemporaries, but I didn't care. I loved his stuff and wanted to see him live (and it had the advantage of being an artist my mother liked, too!)
Thank you for this, I lost my dad many years ago. He was a gifted musician with a tone similar to Gordon. I remember him playing guitar and singing this song many times.
I was so sad to hear of Gordon Lightfoot's passing away recently. Loved his music. One of the best songwriters & storytellers. He was a Canadian legend. My husband & I saw him in concert once. Some of his hits were "Steel Rail Blues", "Ribbon Of Darkness", "Sundown", "Carefree Highway", "Rainy Day People", "Cotton Jenny", "Black Day In July", "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" etc.
I saw him in concert a few years ago, and he said that his ex asked him to change the lyric “the feelings that you lack.” He said she felt that it made her seem like she didn’t care. He respected that. And, darn it, I can’t remember what he sang instead.
It as his daughter who asked him to change the lyrics. She felt her dad was trying to blame her mom for the relationship falling apart. Lightfoot thought about what his daughter said and realized she was right.
Not just a songwriter but a balladeer, troubadour, and storyteller. This was written in the aftermath of his divorce, and you can feel the pain in every note. I'd recommend his songs "Sundown", "Rainy Day People", the epic "Canadian Railroad Trilogy", and the more lighthearted "Summertime Dream".
This one is a true story too. He wrote this as his decade long marriage was breaking up. He did some of his best writing when his heart was breaking. RIP, Gorden. We miss you. A couple of recommendations for other GL songs. Carefree Highway, Sundown, Baby Step Back.
Here the biggest fan of Gordon Lightfoot from Argentina. Gordon's legacy and his beautiful songs are with us. Thank you for spreading the word!!...I suggest if you can give us your opinion of his theme The Watchman's Gone...Thank you!
Definitely one of your best reactions Biz. Gord always brings out the best in people. As a school age child of the 70's in Canada he was the soundtrack of my life. I didn't know it at the time, but looking back I wouldn't have it any other way.
That's my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song. It has great lyrics, a beautiful melody, and he sings it perfectly. He would deserve to be remembered even if this were the only song he ever wrote or recorded. However, he does have more good ones, and either "Sundown" or "Carefree Highway" would be a good choice for your next song by him.
Heck I didn't hear anything about this on Australian TV news bulletins! Yes indeed, rest in peace, Gordon! You've given us a great legacy of songs from 1965(your debut LP, of which I have a Canadian import pressing).
Love your reaction to this song. One of my favourite songs by Gordon is Black day In July. He wrote this song in response to the 1967 Detroit Riots. It was never just his lyrics but the music composition that could be haunting at times in his songs. I hope you do a reaction to this song. Love from Canada
Loved your breakdown of this beautiful song, I understand and appreciate it even more now. “Early Morning rain” is another beautiful song, he has so many. Thank you for keeping his music alive. We Canadians are very proud of him.
💯 An absolutely great song by the incredibly talented Gordon Lightfoot‼🔥 Those are definitely some BARS BizMatik‼It was great seeing how much you were into it‼☮ ❤ 🎶
Thanks very much for this Lightfoot masterpiece BizMatik. I know you've done one other reaction to his music and I'll just say he is the reason I picked up a guitar and learned to play almost 50 years ago. My wife and I saw him and his band perform many times at venerable Massey Hall in Toronto and he was (and still is) our favourite singer/songwriter. The gift that Gordon had for incredibly heartfelt lyrics and hauntingly beautiful melodies has never been matched (IMHO), he was a true communicator. I still find it hard to speak of him in the past tense but like all great artists his unparalleled gift of music keeps on giving. Cheers from Ontario, Canada!
You have such soul. 90% of the reviews that I've seen on Mr. Lightfoot stop several times during the listening. The tidbits are mostly incoherent to the total sum of the song. You've taken the time to digest the entire song before giving your opinion. That is AWESOME. Your reaction is very in-depth and accurate. Thank You!!!
@Watch BizMatik I LOVE how you discussed the lyrics, and I truly appreciate your perspective!! Thank you! Please keep sharing your thoughts, on these masterpiece songs. Much love to you! RIP to the GREAT Gordon Lightfoot. He is favorite of mine, since i was in the womb. xoxo
I live just south of his hometown of Orillia, Ontario, and maybe 10 years agoi saw he was going to be at Casino Rama, so i got tickets and i surprised my husband. WE WERE THE ONLY ONES IN THE FRONT ROW! Oh kiddo, you need to do his song, BEAUTIFUL. Half way through the song i turned to my husband and we kissed. When i looked back at Gordon our eyes met and he winked at us. My husband passed away in May, and he never found out i paid $1,200 for those 2 front row seats. I'm pretty sure if he had found out...let's just say it would have been me going first. My husband, probably the most patriotic Canadian to ever live, bawled like a baby when Gordon passed just before my husband died. I had 22 years with the love of my life, and pretty much my entire life listening to this true artist. Reposez en paix Robert and Gordon. You both will live in my heart till the day it stops beating. Now go listen to BEAUTIFUL. IMO the best love song ever written.❤❤❤
Isn't this song just so beautiful and bittersweet, I have adored this song since I was a young kid, and I love it for different reasons at different times in my life, but those strings, 💐
An accomplished songwriter and performer in Canada and Europe, Gordon broke into American market with this song and " Sundown, " which hit # 1 on Billboard in 1974.

Wise words as usual my friend. The song truly is heartbreaking man. He is God to hear Sundown by him. Carefree Highway is another great one. But he had so much good material. But I think if he hears Sundown, you really get a rounded picture of him after just three songs.

Gordon Lightfoot has always been one of my favorite singers/songwriter. His voice was made for storytelling and the emotions he could get me to feel was amazing. I love all his music, but one of my favorites was Canadian Railroad Trilogy. Maybe you could react to that sometime. I loved your reaction and take on these lyrics. Thank you. R.I.P. Gordon!
One of Gordon Lightfoot's best. But I have to say that his "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" remains one of my favourites.
