Install Garden Hose Drain in Kiddie Pool

  • Hey Everyone,
This is a fairly simple project. I wanted to put a drain in our Kiddie pool for a couple reasons. When it's full it's really heavy and almost impossible to flip over. My wife was tired of using a bucket scoop out the water when I'm not home and now we can easily use the water for our garden rather then just dumping it all in one place.
Here are the parts I used:
    1) Bulkhead Drain: www.amazon.ca/...
    2) 3/4 NPT to garden hose adaptor: www.amazon.ca/...
    3) Simple hose shut off valve: I bought MI e at Canadian Tire but you can find these anywhere
If you have any questions or comments please drop me a message and we can talk about it :))

$80+ in parts on a $5 plastic pool.
Main takeaway from here: Seeing you kids and wife being happy, PRICELESS!
    Good call 👍🏻

I got the idea to do this for the kiddie pool our ducks use when they're rehabbing and not out in the big pond. I googled it to see what others might have learned from a similar project, and 'lo and behold, this video came up. Took all of 5 minutes. The detailed parts list was SUPER helpful! Thank you X 10. I no longer have to worry about my wife hurting herself trying to drain the duck's pool.

      Hey Kimsjudo007,
I'm soo happy to hear this :)
I built this for that exact reason, so my wife isn't hurting herself emptying it when I'm not around. If these videos help just one person, my work is done! Thanks for the feedback

Thank you so much for his video. Simple and easy to install the pool drain. It took me less than 5 minutes. Thanks, also, for giving us the specific parts needed. The whole process was clear and concise.

Thanks for this! I have a big kiddie pool for my dogs to stay cool so I have to clean it everyday. This just made it a whole lot easier for me to clean! 😁💯

Great job on the vid! I was wondering if this was a thing, and sure enough, it is. I’m looking forward to not wasting the water and using it for the garden.

Love this Bob, thanks. Perfect for our duck pool.
Dumb question: What did you use to cut the hole the kiddie pool? I'd rather admit stupidity and cut once, rather than just go for it and screw it up.

Addendum: Would a shorter hose section increase flow/decrease draining time?

Sorry, final addition: Wouldn't a 1" NPT to 3/4" GHT increase pressure, presuming a matching 1" bulkhead? Thank You again.

      Hey Jeff,
      Glad you like the idea!
I just used a pocket knife to cut the hole. The plastic is so thin it cut fairly easily. I just sawed it back and fourth to get that rough hole. You may get away with using a utility knife too. Just be sure not to slip and cut the hole too big.
As for hose length, because it's a gravity drain it's going to always be slow with a garden hose. Length may change this but don't expect much. If you're really interested in higher flow, you'll need to design it with a larger hose and valve. Maybe a 1.5in bulkhead fitting, with a 1.5in treaded valve and a 1.5in hose would work. You'll need a fitting from the valve to the hose. I've added some links for you.
      1.5 inch Bulkhead Fitting
      amzn.to/2Z20GL0
      1.5 inch PVC Threaded Valve
      amzn.to/2Bwkw8r
      1.5 inch Pool Hose Adaptor
      amzn.to/2BInhmV
      1.5 inch hose
      amzn.to/2Z0plzs
I haven't tested these parts together but they look compatible. I hope this helps :)
If you have an opportunity please check out my other stuff and spread the word.
      Take Care :)

Hi Bob. First, thanks for the video and the links to the items. I'm looking for the shut off valve on Home Depot and Amazon and must not be typing in correctly. Any chance you can help me find one?

      Hey M,
Yes no problem. You can get any type of In-line garden hose shut off valve. Here's an example:
      www.amazon.ca/dp/B07S9VDBS2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_i_CK7CP7QSMDVS16WMAGA7?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
      Or
      www.amazon.ca/dp/B000EDQQAQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_i_EPCX2K3SVX3V0C97F5B0
However, these are probably cheaper at homedepot.
      I hope this helps

Very creative. Will this work for inflatable kiddie pools?

    • @bobsoddjobs
      @bobsoddjobs  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Ching-Man Sik,
Well I have never owned an inflatable pool. I imagine there must be a drain hole already installed. You may be able to rig something up so you can attach a hose. If there's no drain hole, you'd have to find a way to puncture a hole through for a drain without deflating / tearing the part that contains the air.
Let me know what you come up with :)

I want to put a drain on the bottom with an L shaped drain line to drain the entire pool. Help?

    • @bobsoddjobs
      @bobsoddjobs  Рік тому

      Hey Alexis,
What you're trying to do is possible but you would likely need to raise the pool off the ground somehow to keep the drain clear. Otherwise when you have water in the pool it will crush the drain hardware underneath it.
