Harry, I watch your channel because of you. There are many modelling sites on UA-cam and I subscribe to those where the modelers have an interesting style and personality.
You are an extremely funny guy and a brilliant craftsman.
I haven't got a 3D printer but I'm interested in how you have used yours, hearing about the problems and your successes.
The fact that you are making sales from the things that you have designed and made is fantastic.
I would be interested in seeing how you work this technology as I can barely use a mobile phone.
If I can make one suggestion, perhaps a vid per week on a different subject. Ship one week, Plane the next, an AV the following and so on.
But in the end it's your channel, so do as you like and stuff the nay sayers.

I used to rotate the video subjects week to week, but found it was slowing down my completion of models because of the time needed to rearrange the workbench, then get back up to speed on the new build each week. I also tried to stay on one kit all the way through. But then the views dropped because not everyone wants to see me building a Stingray etc. I think the best approach is build one subject a month. So I get a good run and can stay focused week after week, but allow variety from month to month for the viewers.
I dont mind 3D printning stuff once In a while. But personally I prefer watching your build videos and seeing the segments where you show how you correct parts or recreate missing parts and stuff like that. It’s because of your videos that I have been using styrene to build more details and I have been seeing my own work improving by using your tips and tricks

I will find a happy balance in my modelling and video output. Just needed to vent I suppose.

I'm completely torn on 3D printing.
I can see the future lies there.
That said, I can't bear the thought of investing all that effort into computing, which I hate, and I'm crap at CAD.
In the last year, I've got into card ship modelling. The kits are mainly from Eastern Europe, and it's been great fun.
A lot of the guys are producing resin 3D accessories for card kits, and I see opportunities there everyday. Guns, propellers, anchors, funnels, pipes, lifeboats etc etc etc.
A 1/200th HMS Dreadnought? We'll wait a long time for that in plastic.
So Harry, I'll watch you whatever, but I miss the wooden ships a wee bit. Wooden ships from plastic kits, and wooden ships from wooden kits.😮
Have you considered Cad/3D projects for those of us who are CAD illiterate?
A nice set of gun barrels for the previously mentioned Dreadnought, for instance. 😊
My wife bought a 3d printer last year. she used it for 4-5 weeks and it's never been turned on since. I have zero interest in using it myself. Each to their own I guess.
As Harry pointed out, the setup costs to produce the files for 3d printing is a fraction of that to produce a boxed kit. There are lots of businesses that designe and sell files that you print and finish yourself, so you do not have to learn CAD to take advantage of what could be done. I like RC tanks and boats and have been printing a 1:6 WW1 Renault tank. I have learnt CAD, so have modified some of the commercial files, to make it better and mine, but that is my choice. Whatever you do, find that happy place.
You don’t need to learn CAD to enjoy 3D printing. A simple printer that will allow you to print out ready made files you get online will only cost you as much as a good airbrush. The prices have come down a lot as the technology has improved exponentially. Most new printers do all the calculations for you. They auto level the bed, adjust flow speed and more intuitively. The only software you need to use is a slicer, and they are very simple. So don’t let CAD put you off. You don’t need to know Math like me or design your own stuff. There is a huge community out there now designing and supplying designs for everyone to enjoy.
@HarryHoudiniModels Yeah, but I want some means of making random stuff as requirements present themselves. I'll give you a 'for instance'. This morning, I received a package from Ukraine containing two card kits. One is a Gun-boat called Koreets, which was an early casualty in the Russo-Japanese war. If I could design my own stuff, such as the masts and yards , and then print them, well that would be my goal. I don't want a new hobby of trawling the net printing stuff that I probably don't want. What I want is to be able to extend my existing hobby by tailoring my printed stuff to what I'm building. And that I fear requires CAD. What you were trying on the Prince is the kind of thing I want to do.
Oh, and I shall need a rat harp for their gun-boat, if I don't end up in the Funny Farm building the hull. 😁
It’s more of a question of what will motivate you. I have a stash (vacuforms and scratch wood ship plans) that I will stick with. I am older and filled with things I want to do within this sphere.
My son has a 3-D printer and I understand what it can do but see it as yet another hobby direction/time sync as you realize.
Don’t chase the crowd - have at least one goal to finish thread.

Hi harry, I feel your pain, like you I am of an age and have way too many projects. I got into 3d printing a few years ago and focused on it rather than anything else, now I just focus on using the 3d printing as a additional tool to make my modelling better. It would be lovely to see you finish your current projects using all the skill and tools that we have at our disposal.
I will try hard not to chase any new squirrels but instead finish what I started… it’s a hard call… but I must resist the squirrel urge.
Harry I watch you because of you, your modelling is a secondary as long as you enjoy what you are doing keep doing it

A great presentation from you. If you want/need to make money you have to do what your customer wants, and that can take you away from your happy place. I am chairman of a model boat club and I was talking with members today saying that I see us as primarily as a social club with members brought together by a shared interest. I know we are separated by many miles, but that is how I see what you do. You, with your humour and human inconsistencies make your social club. Keep doing what makes you happy, as it shows in what you do.
Thanks John. Now I have new contract work there is that comparison of how hard it is to make a dollar on UA-cam, as opposed to real world work. In a few days I can earn more doing graphic contracts than a whole months worth of monetisation and Membership payments here. So while I have a reasonable contract income again I might just do what pleases me on UA-cam, even if it makes little income.
What ever makes you happy, Harry! That is what is most important. The good people are with you whatever you decide to do.

People who have a problem with the whole 3D printing thing typically have a phobia of learning new things. (I'm in my 50's so I understand this as well as anyone)
It's simply another tool at your disposal. If you get into 3d modeling it's just as satisfying as scratch building, especially when you have an idea, you model it and then print it.
The satisfaction of holding what was just an idea not too long ago in your hand as a tangible object...
There's no describing it. I also got into FDM 3d printing and while it's not an option for detailed models it IS really cool for making practical, functional objects.

Nice video. Yeah, you can be damned if you do or don't with 3D printing. Some will see you scratch build something and say "Why don't you 3D print it!?", then some will see you 3D print something and say "Why don't you scratch build it!?". At the end of the day, it's up to you what you do, you're in this hobby for you, not them! I don't mind what you do, it's fun to watch you work and hear your banter. Keep up the good work! I'm currently stuck in a box, surrounded by all my distractions. I need to get out and find a dedicated space where I can settle down and get stuff done.
Every scale modeller needs their space, or cave.

I always find your content very enjoyable. I don’t make ship kits and will probably never will but I always look forward to your output. You are why I watch, you bring an enjoyable, irreverent skilful approach to the hobby. That is refreshing and important. It is a talent and don’t underplay this. There are many 3D offerings but I’d always be interested in where you are taking it because you have a talent to make it worthwhile and enlightening. It is only another branch of the hobby and you have articulated and demonstrated this admirably. I hope you feel the joy to keeping us entertained. Best wishes.

Is the 3d stuff detrimental? not to me. 3d--it's mostly beyond me. I don't have time to devote to learning it. But you go right on doing the thing. I have several hobbies as well - it's Martial Arts tournament season, and practice is ramping up, work is crazy and my own model time is ... less. You're right, there's only so much time. Just saying it Though: I know I'm only one out of however many.. but the Patreon is staying and you keep doing the things that are fun for you. I think I've said this before, I enjoy the enthusiasm for what you're doing. If my little bit of cash helps Bask not go hungry or you get an extra curry here or there, it's well invested for me.

I kinda see 3D modelling like the emergence of resin aftermarket accessories, figures and even full kits that came out in the 80s. It's not a replacement for kit building (it can be I guess), it just allows kits to be modified, converted or even built in the first place if new parts are needed to replace broken/missing ones.
I'm still trying to get up the courage to cast my own resin parts; now this comes out.
I'm always behind the times....
Kit building can be model assembly but CAD can take one from an illustration or plan, so what one makes is unique . Truly scratch building, but in a virtual world, until one prints it, and then it is like a kit.
There are 2 approaches to 3D modelling. Buy or print what others have designed; which is just like buying any kit or aftermarket except cheaper if you can print it yourself. Secondly there is CAD. Computer Aided Design. Which, as I have shown in my videos, you can design a replacement part better than the stock kit one. Or even a scratch a change to your model to update or convert it to what you want to build. I like the freedom of the latter and hope to show more of this in future videos.
😮 Do what you want and When you can.... The hard core viewers will stick around! We all have lot less time left than what we started with...enjoy yourself mate!

So... over the years I changed gears again and again. For a LOOONG time it was 15mm Napoleonics- I travelled (Army) it was portable, colorful, quality (old Glory) and now c.5,500+ individual figures. Got ummmm... older switched to 54mm, really prestige figures- awesome; really rewarding. Switched gears ship models, some wood some plastic (I see some of my stash in your stash). A few airplanes. And suddenly 3D prints of really large scale figure emerged- Marvel Heros, pop figures/subjects (must be 20 Taarna figures)and so I switched gears again. Everything you said in this video resonated with me. Do what makes you feel good including venting in a utube vid! As for the bast---- who bailed on your channel F--- them. You are producing QUALITY!

Do what makes you happy Harry. Keep after that squirrel until a new bigger flashy one comes along, even if it looks like a Formula 1 car or a wooden ship.
Your viewers are also after their own squirrels and are following many many u-tubers. If what you do does not hit the spot for them at this moment they will dump you in a heartbeat. It's the u-tube world we live in unfortunately.

I'll be honest here. I have zero interest in 3D Printing. but that said, I would watch ANY video you made. You could talk for an hour on how to paint a grey wall grey again and i'd watch it. You come across as a really lovely guy and so helpful and friendly and I love your sense of humour! (btw - I'm super jealous of your wingnut wings kits, I always wanted one but they are way way out of my budget!) Thanks for the videos, love them all. Harry, you rock sir! :)

The problem with ever expanding horizons is you cannot complete projects as "feature creep" keeps expanding the possibilities - at some point I have to just finish a bloody kit!
All my aircraft carriers suddenly need a fully detailed hanger - It's the reason for the ships existence. A weekend build always ends up as an annual project...
Yes so true. Every build now I feel needs all the extra detail added to it, and this slows down the process. Maybe I should just try to simplify things and do a few out of the box builds that can be finished quickly and easily.

G'day Harry, gotta thank you for inspiring me to buy an old MPC/AIRFIX 1/24scale Stuka Ju-87. One of my first kits as a kid and I absolutely loved it. Now I get to relive the build and add the skilks I have not to a vintage big bent wing bird. I credit your positive attitude and great videos in going firward with this project. You ROCK!!

Hi Harry, well you can't lose me that easy. I enjoy your channel, tips and how too. I have had a 3D printer for about 4 years, and would love to use it. But I haven't found a design program I can learn. So I'll will stick to scratch build for now. Your channel do what you enjoy.
Have you tried Onshape? It is one the easiest free platforms I have found and there is a great channel with easy to understand tutorials “Teaching Tech” by a fellow Aussie. It got my brain thinking CAD again before I moved onto more complex software like Fusion.
A good channel is like a fine conversation down the pub, It should meander, change subjects, bring new things into it. As long as it's all fun :)

I’m not using a 3D printer yet because I don’t know where to start or what I could learn and do with it that would enhance my life in some way.
UA-cam is crowded with plastic kit modeling channels; your subscribers and viewers are best served when you differentiate yourself.
You have a rare talent for demonstrating EXACTLY how to do fiddly stuff; to show us tips and techniques and that talent can be applied as well to 3D printing as kit bashing and scratch building.
A plaque on the wall in our grammar school history room read: “History is bunk” a quote from Henry Ford.
The history of scale modeling is fascinating but it’s also bunk. Show us the future of our hobby; put everything else aside or get it out of the way.
3D printing is the future but is daunting for the novice. I’m encouraged to think that if an old fart like you can do it then I can too!
Follow your passion; your core audience will come with you; for every viewer that drops out you’ll pick up new ones.
I want to see the day when I can print out a Houdini kit, sprue and all, like a virtual Airfix.
Immerse yourself in additive model manufacturing; the design, the math, the cost management (big one) and how we could use it to augment our tools and skill sets - to have more fun building better models.
And always damn the torpedoes !!!

Personally, much as I like the _idea_ of 3D-printing, it is the _practicalities_ of it that put me off trying it myself. All the maths, parts-design (I've never ever used any 3D CAD software ever in my life), and more especially all the after-print clean-up, washing, curing, to say nothing of the smells, and toxic fumes, even with water-based resins etc etc just means it's not for me. Example: I can only use acrylic paints (Tamiya, Vallejo etc) at home, cannot use _any_ lacquer-based paints/products at all due to the smells and massive complaints from She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed. So I am sorry, but until that part of the process is far far better/easier/ *cleaner* I am afraid I'll stick with "normal" pre-made model kits. But that's just me.
I don’t use the toxic resin anymore. Switched to filament printing. Much less toxic, recyclable and no chemical clean up. Using PLA filament you have less fumes than glueing a model kit together. I also only use water based acrylic paint due to respiratory issues, so the Filament Printer solves that problem and produces just as good results for what I need to make.
I'd expect a lot of people can't cope with your channel evolving, things change, and people change. I like the idea of 3d printing making stowage etc. more available. You do you, Harry, I'm going nowhere.

My hobbies tend to compliment each other, like yours apparently do: 3D printing/laser cutting parts to enhance my model kits. I'll do one-offs that might have a learning curve - like when I made some Arduino-based flight simulator switch panels for a friend, but having hobbies that go with each other is something that you can do if you manage your time. After all, we have to have *something* to do while the paint and/or glue is drying! Haha!
Yes it is a nice filler hobby. I sort of work the other way around. Get a print going then do my contract work or build a model while the 3D printer does its stuff.
What made me subscribe was how you explain how and why you do something. I think the first was t Stingray interior, and more recently how rigging works. Repetition isn’t a problem for me, it probably helps.
Thanks for your perspective Mike. I will always try to show something new, even if it is a new spin on some technique I may have shown years before. There is always something new and unique to explore even if we have done that task before. I will try to find that in upcoming videos.
The 3D thing seems to help a lot of other hobbies as long as the 3D printer isn't a time hog hobby itself. I'm about to find out....just now unboxing...total noobie! Plan is household stuff, diorama bits or what not...NOT the rivet counting rabbit hole. Thanks for all you do!
Yes Jeff… good for widgets around the house. I’ve printed Cat Flaps, Coffee portafilter holders, bag hooks for my car seats as well as tape holders and more for modelling. The rigging tools took over for a while, but now I have a good range of styles and sizes so I don’t spend days designing new ones. What I do like is making little add on or more detailed replacement parts for my models.

If I'm not building model planes, people seem to be disinterested in my videos - particularly whenever I do something about 3D printing. Heaven forbid creating a project that is personally interesting and then making a video about it . . .
I'm not just interested in model planes, I particularly like trains and other things like that, so sometimes you just gotta enjoy the hobby the way you want to enjoy it
I have been yearning for a model railway set again, like I had when a youngster. Imagine the gnashing of teeth and horrendous outcry if I started down that route, or rail as may be.
Interesting topic - glad someone is discussing it - 3D printing opens up a lot of modeling possibilities as it becomes easier and cheaper to do what would have taken hours/days to do. However it removes the skill needed to do true scratch building of some parts. Maybe this level of skill is a dying artform that only a few in the hobby will pursue.
I think scratch building was dying out anyway with the plethora of aftermarket now available providing most modellers with the upgrades they wanted without needing to hone the skills to make the changes themselves. I scratch build because I enjoy the craft. But then I don’t enjoy a click together kit with no challenge.
I watch the channei to follow you ... there are plenty of other channels where i can watch pieces being glued together. I enjoy your watching your videos for the humour and learning new skills.

Selfishly, I'm totally fine with the topic of 3D printing!. I happen to have a 3D printer and am still struggling to incorporate that into my builds which you have so easily grasped. It is the way of the future.
Getting your head around 3D Printing can take a while. I was lucky having worked in Virtual Reality for a decade designing 3D objects. So I knew how to go about creating in CAD, just needed to learn how the new software worked. Some will like creating their own stuff in CAD, others will just enjoy printing ready made 3D files. It is all good. Some of us build models out of the box. Others like to modify and scratch build parts for them. It is the same thing.
I was on the fence about getting into 3d printing for a long time (and the attraction to it for me is almost exclusively as an adjunct to building kits). Recently took the plunge, and my impressions so far are as follows: On the good side, once you get a decent working knowledge of your choice of 3d modeling program, you can "electronically scratchbuild" parts with detail of a standard that you could never in a thousand years touch with traditional techniques, even if you're a vascular surgeon. Plus, if there isn't an aftermarket part available (or one available at a sane price) to replace a really dreadful kit part, just fire up the laptop and render one for yourself. A downside is that with modelers as a group already tending to be a bit OCD, 3d printing is just one more way to go down a rabbit hole, like I realized recently when I was installing, one by one, raised .28mm diameter dome rivets I printed to replace ones lost to seam sanding on an old 1970s 1/32 Revell kit. 🤣
Yes the 3D thing is a rabbit hole… but that is half the fun of it. I just love realising I can improve, replace, or create a brand new part, which is as good as the kits, just by imagining it, drawing it, then printing it. It is magic!
With the light on I can see all the laughter lines on your face. Banjo? I am very interested with 3d printing. I have no previous experience in it but I believe as you pointed out, it has a place in modern model construction by the hobbyist. An introduction to starting printing with methods and costings would be well worth viewing. As modellers we are always discovering new products and methods to improve our subjects. 3d printing is just another step forward and maybe , years in the future, the model companies will only sell the printing files for a model kit and our household printer will knock the sprues out in 5 minutes with a full instructions list.
I must have laughed a lot in my life…. there is a road map of lines under my beard. I will continue the 3D printing adventure and try to do simple videos about the aspects that relate to scale modelling. Maybe that will sway over the people who just get upset about the new technology, or are simply ignorantly afraid of it. Either way I will do my thing. Stay if you like it… or go then come back when you realise you missed the banjo.
Harry just do what you enjoy. It is your life and your videos just give us a window into what you are up to.

Resin 3D Printing completely derailed my “Dora 1/35” build. The model is “meh” in terms of details and many parts are brittle and broke inside the bag. BUT I am sure I will have a much better model IF I manage to climb out of the rabbit hole I put myself in with the 3D Printer.
I believe a resin 3D printer is just another tool, but its hugely steep learning curve can make it feel like a new hobby.
But it is so flexible that modelers cant ignore it.
Having said that, I would like to call your attention to a white space on youtube that applies to modeling and 3D Printing: there are close to no channels that cover “intermediate” skills and debugging of resin prints. Nor anyone teaching how to ease the learning curve for the scale modeler.
I think the way to go (at least it is what would interest me the most in a modeling channel) are tips and trick on how to better use this new tool.

I like the variety of content and it has inspired me to try other genres of models. 3D printing has uses, I have used mine to organise my modelling desk and also other areas like in the garage. It is also useful for extras for dioramas and so on. I had a turret frame missing from a kit, found a 3D version and used that!
That’s a great way to make 3D printing useful Glen… you don’t always need to learn CAD
I’m with you on the 3D printing. I’ve watched with interest because I have a 3D printer and I do 3D modeling. I may not be your typical viewer with regards to this, but I’d like to see a video on how you do the modeling on the computer. It would be nice to see your approach. I wonder if there’s a way to show a quick overview without alienating too many viewers. Basically, show the actual model and how you translate that into the computer in a simple overview. If you’ve never seen this done, it’s completely mysterious to a lot of people how that happens.
I did show how I designed the deck parts in CAD during my video on printing with wood filament for the Airfix Prince (Part 2 of the series). Maybe I could show how I think through then design the part I need in more detail for an upcoming video. Let me see what I can find to share.

HH, I don't care for Content Creators who 3D print details because I don't have a machine to duplicate that effort, so I agree you should continue doing what you love. 3D printing just reduces my interest in that part of the build.
But does that apply to modellers who buy aftermarket to add detail? Same thing really. You can always get someone else to print what you need if you don’t want to get a 3D Printer.

Modern life gives squirrel-chasers too much choice, I recently went on a holiday to the Islands of Orkney and it was so wonderful that it has made me totally re-evaluate my life, I now only do things inspired by that holiday.
That’s still a load of stuff, but it has disciplined me to narrow down my choices a bit….. and lo and behold I get tons more stuff done.
So I think that it’s good to find a way to reduce your choices, you just have to find your own way to do it

I don’t have a 3D printer… yet.
What I do have is a 1/72 Airfix Typhoon mk1b that I have been poking at, on and off, for over a decade. My scratch part count is well over 200 for a kit that had less than thirty pieces to begin with. Building the cockpit frame required me to test fit the fuselage so often that the alignment pins fell off.
I figure that I have almost another 200 pieces to go before I can call it done, because the car-door canopy will take a bit, along with adding the eight rocket rockets with the level of detail that I’d settled on, and the instruments and other cockpit furniture.
That’s not counting the frame that I discarded after I realized that it was stunningly out of dimension, as opposed to somewhat out of dimension, like the one that I went with.
I wouldn’t want to print the entirety of the modifications, because that would take away from the accomplishment of what I have built, but an even bigger accomplishment would be to finish the kit, and using a printer would aid that end.
You can never have the same experience of craftsmanship with CAD, at least not in a tactile sense. But the thought processes are similar and then the problem solving and experimentation are the same. All depends what you want out of the hobby. I don’t enjoy shake and bake kits because it takes away the building, shaping and honing of parts to fit, which is what I enjoy when building a kit. But I do enjoy the process of using Computer Aided Design then seeing my creations come to life as they print.

In the end it depends on what you want to do.
For me, it's a godsend, since I mainly do sci-fi stuff and dioramas, where some things never got a model kit at all or I want to add specific details that would be a pain to just scratchbuild. Right now I'm working on two models of concept art for a show that I prefer over the final choice, along with another one that's something designed by a fan and so different that I'd have to scratchbuild every single bit anyway, with compound curves that would be a real pain in the ass.
I think the niche market of subjects like Sci-Fi is a perfect fit for 3D printing. Low runs, but high quality, and driven by the fans themselves who want to CAD the subjects and share.

And a while ago I did stuff from comparatively obscure cartoon and anime shows from several decades ago that at best received some inaccurate toy versions, but never models that are accurate and ready to be upgraded with electronics..
I like the detail with 3D printing , I have been buying 3D parts up for several future ships I'm planning to build . I don't own a printer to do this and I'm not sure I could master 3 D printing but it gets frustrating trying to buy what I need to make these conversions. Never learned cad drawing , being retired and on a fixed income going back to school to learn this Its really throwing me into a quandary .

I look at this channel and I see some rambling old fart waffling on.....and I just keep coming back for more. You never quite know whats coming, and I think it's great. Your modelling ability is great, but it's the person that brings me back. Too many folks out there trying to please, not enough people being themselves.
As far as 3D printing goes, its just another tool. How you use it is up to the individual. You can scratch build stuff, 3D print it, combine the two. It's all options. I mean, I printed a plug to adapt a tyre valve to a bigger plug to inflate a blow up chair....and before that I 3D printed a plug to vac form a canopy for an RC helicopter. Use it when it suits. But don;t bother filming it. Watching a printer print is worse than paint drying!
Oh...and you DO have some great kits on that shelf

For some of the very reasons you give I have not gotten into 3D printing. I think it would be too much of a time sink taken away from what I love doing which is "building models". I find it much easier to buy parts I want from others and have them spend their time and money on printing the parts I want to add to my models. While it may cost a little more I'm guaranteed a prefect part every time. If I had a 3D printer and it doesn't print right the first time or the second, etc., etc. I have not wasted my time and money, someone else has. So for now I'll stick to buying parts or scratch building what I need.
Makes sense and yes the 3D thing can be a time sink, but it’s still an enjoyable hobby.
problem is most channels feature dove tailing, chisel sharpening/airbrushing , weathering continuosly till viewers are sick of it, then they announce they are moving on !! kit assembly/ making a chair ? nope straight to 3D printing/CNC machining. basically opening your first took package tp computer tools , with hardly a glance at the meat of the hobby, from £100 airbush to £3000 3D printer all before you built your first spitfire.
Goodness mister Vogon, the Elegoo printer I bought was about £250! and the other two were given to me by the manufacturer to review on UA-cam. They only cost £100-£500 each. And I built my first Spitfire over 6 decades ago. So I hope I earned my stripes before jumping into 3D Printing?
I think 3D printing will replace photoetch and current resin eventually and we’ll eventually perhaps even replace injection moulding. But not yet and not for a while.
It needs to be less techy and more a consumer item, like a microwave. But those machines are here already in small numbers, and no more expensive than a Good TV. I think the technology will just burst out into mainstream as the print file libraries grow, which they have done exponentially since I started, so you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to use a 3D printer. Just request a model or thing from the community, then press a button and print it. Just like zapping a TV dinner.
As it seems 3-D printing is the direction modelling is going in until it is replaced with something else. I don`t think I will still be around, so I am still holding on to my scrap box and unused model parts.
There will always be a need for scratch Michael. Sometimes using CAD and 3D printing for a small job is just not worth the time and trouble. Then it is more satisfying to hand make the change yourself.

Take you time and watch a lot of reviews so you can inform yourself on what is available that will suit your needs. It is a huge minefield of choices. Resin or filament. Bed slinger cartesian or Core XY. Enclosed or open frame. A good relatively inexpensive plug and play filament printer from Bambu Labs or one of the new Ender 3 from Creality are great starter printers to see if you like the thing before spending big. If you need the detail of resin then there are cheap starter printers like the one I reviewed, but you need a lot of safety equipment and many curing tools plus washing agents. Then there is the resin toxicity to be aware of. Filament, especially using PLA like I do, is much safer and easier to work with. But it won’t give you the fine detail of resin.
I’m interested. I’ve just bought an FDM printer primarily for accessories and stuff. Where else are you going to find a 1936 Zarkov spaceship from Flash Gordon (for example). I don’t have the money to have a die made for commercial manufacturing and no skill to scratch build.

Harry, have you ever built the Revell Spanish Galleon or Man-o-War in 1/96 scale? I just finished my galleon finally after having the kit for 16 years in a box and enjoyed it.
I haven’t ever built a Spanish Galleon Will. There is the Carrack I found and reviewed earlier this year, but won’t get around to building for a while. I find the Spanish ships a little gaudy and not elegant like the English, Dutch, or French sailing ships. But that is just my opinion.
For me it's not 3d printing, it's inflation that's the issue. Kits seem to be any were from 20 - 60 dollars more expensive than they used to be.
Where as I paid $5 for a full 3D Ship model to print. Might use $5-10 of filament to get it done, if I want it large. That is an advantage of 3D printing. Niche subjects at low cost, once you have the tools and the list of 3D print files for sale grows out in the community.
In a world of limited resources, is 3D printing the way forward? I suspect it is quite energy intensive and requires a lot of harmful chemicals in order to succeed well. I do enjoy the simplicity of scratch-building and recycling the scrap materials to finish a model. I do hate rigging ships and planes, but it is immensely satisfying to complete a good job of rigging.
The Resin printing is toxic and a path I am not pursuing. My new printers are filament, and for the most part all the material is biodegradable and no more toxic than a styrene kit. Not only that but the material can, in theory, be recycled. I have seen guys make filament from used soda bottles. In the future we could just put our recycling in a machine, then print new stuff as we need it. But yes that is far off for now.

Hi cobber we are moving house and I'm clearing out my loft and come across 2 airfix models I bought yonks ago the revenge and the mayflower both white boxs price was still on them in old GBP they where 16 shillings and 6 pence which equates to approx 78p in new GBP are they worth anything I may even post them to you if I know where to send them as I no longer do galleys I tend to stick to ww2 ships now keep up the good work you are a vey funny man 1 has been started with some terrible painting which I must have done when I was a youngster

We all know that "life" gets in the way of hobbies and interests. 3D printing is interesting to a point, I'm sure I will buy and use 3D printed parts in some of my builds. I earned my living as a draughtsman in a variety of jobs over the years, but I have no interest in doing it myself.
My guess is you will make better videos when you are doing what you want, rather than just churning out another repetition from the past.

The cost of getting a 3D printer, that just works out of the box, has come down a lot in the last few years. For the price of a good airbrush you can now get a decent printer and you are good to go in minutes after unboxing it.
Harry my cemment wasnt a critique or you, it was a commentary of far too many hobby channels who be they woodworking showing 500 eps on dove tails inferspersed with 500 on shapening . OR MODELING with eps of "this is a kit i built isnt it a beaut" interupted by countless weathering eps maybe one on actual building and painting. then next its using a 3D printer or cnc machine to peaople who just figured dovetails or how to make a prop spin. one extreme to the other, nothing in between. at the moment they are all rabid over 3D or CNC until matter replicators come along. newbies have to trawl back listings to disconver what cyano acrylate, scratch building or the horrors of PM MODELS. Thankfully yous show which I have followed pre tangerine woes, and privvy counters covers from collecting itch, to build from scratch, reviews is a must watch ( ok so on eps about 3D printing i tend to let the ep run while I enjoy watching valejo dry). these other " this is glue and kit, now 3D" or "this is a 5000 parts intricate model I made and finnished, bask in my glory for i shall not tell how it was done " shows put off newbies.

Oh I still need that little bit from Patreon and UA-cam monetisation… but thankfully I it is not the only income stream I now have. Since the plague and losing my decade long reliable contract job, I have struggled to find work. So UA-cam was an essential income stream to pay the bills. It seems I have been in that mode of make videos that pay, so I can pay my bills for a few years now.
But I think I can now relax a bit and just do videos I enjoy making, even if they don’t go viral or make the big bucks. That is how I started the channel, so that is where I need to get back to. Thanks for reminding me Jeff.

I can understand your aversion, I wasn’t all that fussed by photo etch when I returned to the hobby after many decades.
3D printing is a way to make things, in a similar fashion to the styrene kits you are familiar with. In that process you create a master, make a mould from it, and then inject the styrene plastic into the mould to create model kit parts.
3D printing uses a virtual master/mould. You design the whole thing on your computer using a CAD (Computer Aided Design) program. Just like drawing a 2 dimensional plan, however in 3 dimensions. This is a virtual object which can be sent to a 3D printer, which will lay down the plastic layer by layer to create the thing you need.
You don’t need to learn CAD to use the 3D Printer because many other modellers around the world have made many millions of objects already, which can be downloaded from 3D libraries. Many are free and those that cost are usually only a few dollars.
You take that digital file, often an STL, and slice it to suit your printer, a very easy task with software provided by your printer manufacturer. You send this sliced file, called GCODE, to the printer and sit back while it does all the work creating what you need.
Sometimes it will print 1 solid object ready to use, or with most complex things they will be printed in parts that you assemble later. 3D printing is just a form of manufacture that is now cheap enough so the hobbyists can afford to make their objects for modelling at home.

I was going to write a few suggestions for stopping the whiney people from whining but why bother? There will always be comments that are made by people expressing dissatisfaction. I find the most critical are without content on their own channel. 3D resin printer technology need to improve before I would want one. The purchasing of download files for printing is not large enough for my interests yet. I do use resin upgrades. For 1/32, Tamiya F-4, F-15 and F-16 projects there is a growing collection of Aires, Reedoak and Reskit products.
Now I am intrigued… what would you have said to the whingers?

Instead of an all new video, a repost with bonus material specific to a current project. A mention during a monolog as you did with this post or links during or at the end. Links in the description. Unfortunately, many do not read the descriptions unless it is pointed out. For the model build reveal videos I have done on my channel, the number one oddest for viewer comments is the Lost in Space, Jupiter 2, 1/35, Moebius model. I answer all and thought the description would curtail many super weird questions but not so much. This apparently is the online world we deal with. 3D printing has no soul in my opinion. I like mucking about with plasticard and whatever else is in the box. 3D-is total precision, machine-formed resin, reproducing plans rather than building your own version within the limits of your skill and materials. Keyboard and programs rather than knife and soldering iron. Digital modelling is not scratchbuilding.Why not just build a machine to shrink the real thing? That is actually what you are doing, not modelling. Building model kits is another thing, making your best efforts on someone else's framework whereas 3d printing is bringing the manufacturer's factory into your house. Each to his own. Re. the vids - there is always the impatient mouse which can eliminate boredom from this side.
You have obviously never had to design something from scratch in CAD. The process is exactly like scratch building, You start with a basic rectangle, then cut holes and shapes out of it. Then you extrude and bend and curve edges. A lot of work goes into a CAD design. Just as many hours as doing it by hand with tools on your workbench. So to say it has no soul is absurd! That is like saying Photoshop designs have no soul. The art is from the creator. We just use a digital tool.

I'm not a computer guy ... I'm a hands-on guy ... 3D printing is 'new age' technology that produces really detailed , obscure models and parts , but I have no interest in it ... hell , I have yet to break out an airbrush
Each to their own matey… I didn’t airbrush until after I started my UA-cam channel and a viewer sent me one. Still not completely sold on it. Rattle cans and hairy brushes still do the job quite well.
Your just like me...sure I buy a kit (They must be over 50yrs old...wos that about) But I play with my Landrover and as an old welder I love playing with all the new kit that's on the market. Walking on the downs with my dog and so on. But, I don't run a modelling UA-cam channel. I see your problem, your presentation and personality is your biggest asset so widen your topics and show us what your up to. The ultra modellers might piss off but I bet (depending on your thunbnails) you get a broader subscriber...maybe.
