it would be neat to see OpenRCT2 add a scenario option of “research order is random” in a future update.
When making the invention list, there is an option to shuffle them. I think this is available while playing a scenario in the cheats drop-down menu.
But I do think there needs to be some improvement. It’s tedious to sort them by type, order them within their type, and then manually interleave them in case the player has all options checked.
With the option to disable categories I think complete randomness would be a bit of a pain to program. Easier option would be random starting point in the list so it can skip items already researched or disabled.
@@davidmcgill1000 not at all, thats easily programmable. Just only include what you want to randomize.
@@ianmoore5502 Which is allocating another list, populating that list with everything available, randomly choosing an item from it, and deleting it. A bit more to be doing than usual. Alternatively just nuke the existing list with a sort, moving everything available to the top of the list and get a random number up to the length of that.
@@davidmcgill1000 It's not 1999 anymore, manipulating a list with a few hundred items takes microseconds.
No surprise you showed the Heartline when saying "... the ones you start with absolutely suck"
Are you saying you do not believe that was just coincidence???? Always fun to see where he attacks it in his videos.
Concept coasters tend to have those things.
I understand the gimmick behind it where roll pivots around your center-of-mass or heartline but it requires such strict construction to make such rolls possible.
So tempting to make a custom scenario where you only have the Heartline and call it "Heart Attack"
@@darkowl9 That or "Marcel's Nightmare"
I expected a "Stop picking on me!" to appear as it did in one of the other videos!
One notable thing is also that after you've researched everything for the park, the funding is still costing you money even though there's nothing left to research. You have to set the funding to "no funding" manually. OpenRCT2 might have fixed this.
It has, it automatically sets the funding to No Funding after the last payment have been made for the last item to invent.
I wonder if they can make it tell you how many items in each category are left to be researched
Researching a toilet: "Hmmm so he just stands next to the bowl and pees in it?" ... "Yes yes". *Toilets unlocked*
Critical research failure.
Our model of the toilet filled, and then overflowed.
More funding needed.
Restroom 1 has crashed!
New challenge:. Do a scenario without any restrooms available to build!
@@johnfoltz8183 Three Monkeys is bad enough with its lack of initial stall research.
They need research to figure out how to cram an unlimited number of people into a 1x1 sqaure
Parkitect actually does have randomized ride research order, and it's infuriating in practice. Some scenarios are absolutely brutal until you get get lucky enough to research a good coaster type (the Kaiserburg scenario is infamous for this).
Would be Cool if it got some kind of research/skill tree like thing
But I don't think that would work with the many mods or rides you could add
So lets give Marcel a maximum funding for his research on this video and he can buy a Ferrari as well ;)
don't know man, 400€ is no joke.
Why not the new DAF 2021?
In the Swamp Cove scenario, if you set research to just shops and stalls, the drink stall won't be researched until the end of year one. This video makes so much sense why that happens.
I was legit confused why this had so few views, but then I realized it came out 5 minutes ago
If I remember well RCT1 research did actually have some randomness added to it. For example, on Forest Frontiers you would sometimes start with the monorail and sometimes with the miniature railroad, or sometimes you get the cotton candy stall at the start, and sometimes the ice cream stall. Interesting that RCT2 completely removed all the randomness. Perhaps this could be something that OpenRCT2 could reintroduce in the future.
Technically that's not randomness in the research but rather randomness in which rides are in which list. It is still a nice touch that RCT2 doesn't have though.
One scenario stared out with the only food stall was one for French fries and guests complained about no food to eat.
@@MarcelVos I believe RCT Classic has it. Either that or all the screens are starting to look the same to me.
@@johnfoltz8183 That's weird because in RCT Classic that I play on mobile, the fries stalls are easily the most popular food stall that for whatever reason command the highest prices.
@@jefffinkbonner9551 on mobile it’s completley different
You notice that there is no randomness when you are a kid and have no other game so you replay the scenarios over and over again
That, and if you’re like me and suck at the game, so I end up playing the easy scenarioes again and again. Or mess up and start over, mess up and start over, etc.
Hello everyone!
Words that make your day a lot better as it means another Marcel RCT vid.
I said it outloud to myself as the video was loading. :3
Bro thank you for the shout out!! I appreciate you very much
Well deserved. Love your vids!
@@kase9165 thank you!!
Wish I could see which rides are available to be researched in each scenario while playing!
It definitely would help influence which categories to check off. Making due with the stock given rides for 5 months would be worth it if the 6th shop/stall in line was the cash machine :D
I think you can with OpenRCT2.
"If you liked the research that I put on this video, consider giving this video a like" - nah fam, I'd rather jack up the research funding to max so further and in-depth research can be discovered about RollerCoaster Tycoon.
Just my two-cents.
*Just my €384 😋
Once played a custom scenario where I didn't have bathrooms unlocked. had to reach 3000 guests with no bathrooms.
Even had max research on for like 5 years and never unlocked it. eventually reached the goal, but had a lot of people needing to pee by the end
The scenario maker was a cruel guy lol
That is an evil scenario because having no washrooms cause lots problems
I think another thing worth pointing out is that research is billed weekly. A dirty little trick you can do is select 'No Funding' just before the end of each month, and you will save 25% of the cost of whatever your funding level is with very little effect on the 'completion' date. Just be sure to set the research funding back to 'Minimum/Normal/Maximum' at the start of the next month!
I was just about to make the same comment.
Same trick works with thr staff too. I think he did a video covering that.
So, the “hire staff on first day of the week/fire on the last” trick?
@@colejohnson66 that's the one!
Reminds me of old XCOM where just before each month ends you could transfer stuff between bases - they didnt get paid while moving
Hail capitalism!
2:55 Nice!
aye the exact order of things become apparent when you replay any map few times.
annoyingly enough sometimes info kiosk is not researched AND is not in first stall slot, thats how i learned that nothing about the system is random at all.
Topic suggestion: How does garbage work? I know we need trash cans and need to empty them. The question is more on how is trash generated. Can you run a trash free park if you have no stalls?
If you run stall free park you will have no trash
It is interesting how Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 had a kind of almost random research, by why of picking a random ride to be pre-researched and one to be researched later (For example, if you load up Forest Frontiers on RCT1 a couple times, you may notice sometimes you will have the Monorail pre-researched, and other times you will have the Steam train pre-researched) And the one not picked would be researched later.
Great research on research, Marcel!
this guy somehow always gets me to watch videos explaining complicated mechanics of a game ive never played.
Your videos are some of the best on here in terms of conveying information clearly and efficiently while still being entertaining. Thanks!
I’ve never even played RCT nor do I have any interest in playing the games, but boy are these videos fun to binge.
I love how my favorite game of all time has so much more depth than I thought, and that you have been able to make so many videos regarding how deep it really goes in regards to gameplay mechanics. Keep up the the good work Marcel!!
These games really do hold a never-ending supply of new info. It's like a shepard's tone but in video game format.
Anyone else not played RCT in 20 years, but still are subbed and watch all these videos cause they’re really interesting anyway?
I love seeing near impossible maze from your other video in Crazy Castle. thank you for another great video Marcel!
I'm a simple man. I see a Marcel video, I upvote.
I always max out research with only certain categories: Roller Coasters until I get the Corkscrew, then Roller Coasters/Gentle/Thrill rides as needed. With the occasional forcing Transport rides only to get the streamlined monorail, of course.
Edit to add: it wouldn't be a Marcel video without Marcel shitting on the Heartline Twister :D
I tend to focus on unlocking Gentle/Thrill rides that have roofs to prepare for rainy days, unless I actually do need more roller coaster types. That, and unlocking stalls when needed.
Fuck the Boat Hire and its numerous "Ride Improvements" in RCT1 though.
An interesting in-depth explaination about how the Research in RCT2 works, wish I had videos like this when playing these games during my childhood!😂👍👏
I'm curious if it's possible to do a "no research" challenge in rct where you just turn off research in every map and see if the level is possible
Recently I was wondering how this work and was surprised to found to didn't make a video yet.
Now it's done, thank you for the video :3
First of all: I think it's GREAT that they splitted the items for researching up, 'cause in RTC1, all is "together", so when I wanna gentle rides, I also get all the transport rides (at first, which I DON'T WANT!) and I get all the water rides when I wanted Thrill Rides. Even the water rides aren't that a problem, 'cause of the big and fast water slide item, but that's also the only "thrill water ride" I think. So most of the other water rides are more just for "fun" or decoration and so on. So it's reaaaaaaaaaallly gooooood that in RTC 2, these items are splitted up!! That's SO great!
Thank you for this video, 'cause I also thought that it's totally random!! :O
Bedankt Marcel, je video's helpen me altijd om mijn eigen rct streams leuk te makne
2:55 nice
I'm so proud of myself! I actually figured something out before Marcel Vos! I remember trying to beat Electric Fields a long time ago, and it took me several tries, so I noticed the research happened in the same order each time. I think there was one particular ride I liked that got researched early in that scenario, but I forget which one.
The research you put into this topic is quite thorough.
I'll see myself out, thanks. :)
Heartline in less than 20 seconds. Huh.
4:54 The ride Don't Wet Yourself has wet itself.
As always, fascinating work Marcel.
I REALLY miss the "ride improvements" of RCT1. Let me explain.
When you had ride improvements, it was just trains - it was also special (and sometimes even "basic") track pieces or that the train unlocked the track pieces!
I grew up going to Kennywood, PA a lot, and they have a longstanding tradition of keeping old rides but just refreshing them or improving them over time. The Pippin became the Thunderbolt when thet added a new section, the Steel Phantom became the Phantom's Revenge, and so-on. I'm sure other parks have done this too.
Anyways it is a LOT more fun in scenarios and creates a lot more immersion and attachment to the park when your first rides feel more old and difficult because they are, and then to be able to "refresh" them later.
The best example is regular wooden coasters. Without any ride improvements they don't even have banked turns!!! They also don't start with splash sections or steep downhill turns (only with articulated trains), and they DEFINITELY don't have loops! (It's OP enough to play an RCT1 scenario with banking turns from the start - loops are SUPER OP and break immersion of starting with an "old" park a LOT).
Also on-ride photo sections... and many other things. It was just really nice to see your park and decisions change as you went through "history." Yes, in RCT2 there are side-friction coasters and things like that, but there's no reason to rework and refresh your old designs which really takes a lot of the fun out of them.
I distinctly remember there always being banked turns on a Wooden Roller Coaster at the start of RCT1 levels... or that every scenario had them enabled. But the water splash and the loops, yeah, you had to research those.
The Articulated Trains came in the first expansion, and by default they all had the steep twists and retroactively put them on all the Wooden Coasters (the Articulated Trains had to be researched though)
@@stylesrj I'm gonna have to check tomorrow but I REALLY distinctly remember having to research banked turns in Forest Frontiers. Because I played that one a lot and always immediately went to build a custom wooden coaster - before even the merry-go-round. It happens quickish though.
I'll doublecheck and report back tomorrow though
@@stylesrj Well I loaded the steam version, and you're right. Looking at the wiki, Looping Landscapes (which I never had as a kid) added loops as an option for them. I only had the original, and later Corkscrew Follies. I'm wondering if the loops added by Looping Landscapes took the place of the banked turns for the ride improvements for the wooden rollercoaster? Like if there was a limited number of options, and that bumped it out? I started and re-started Forest Frontiers hundreds of times... I am CERTAIN there was some version of the game that did not have banked turns available at the start
@@hngldr
Well, that settles it then :D
Because yeah, I never recalled having to research banked turns on any ride. Loops, splashes, train designs... yeah those were researched.
Through discovering your channel a few days ago I learnt of oprct2 and have started playing again after yeeears.
Just curious, if you are researching say a Roller Coaster and then at the last second disable the Roller Coaster checkbox, what happens to the progress made? Does it just transfer over to whatever is the next eligible thing on the list?
The type of ride (and by extension, the individual ride) that research will unlock is determined at exactly 1/3 of the way through the process, and your research priorities have no effect at any other time. Once the decision is made, the researchers will develop whichever ride they have already decided to make until it is finished, irrespective of your set research priorities.
I put everything but thrill, gentle and coasters off
Helped a lot! Been trying to beat Crazy Castle for a while now...
Such good videos on a game I haven't played in over a decade
Hey Marcel, lovely video as always! Could you do a video of how loans work next? I applied RCT2 loans logic in the real world and now some guys are calling me daily telling me they're going to break my thumbs if I don't pay them back :P
5% interest means you lose a digit for every month you go unpaid.
I dread to think how your hands and feet look like after a year or so of non-payment.
I knew it wasn’t random. I learned this from that one scenario where you have to go through a couple of research on stalls before you can actually get a Drinks Stall. (Evil.)
I just finished that one recently. It was awful
Haha already seen Cody W video and its totally worth the watch! 😂🤣
Thanks for this valuable information Marcel!
New RCT2 Video by Marcel? Yes! 😊
Finally someone explains research.
So many PhD dropouts wish they'd had seen this video before.
Excellent video.
I have 1 question: ATM near to entrace of the park makes less guest go away?
Basically put them where guests are going to be spending a lot of money, i.e souvenir strips outside of ride exits, food courts, and information kiosks. (Especially when you set the price of umbrellas to $20.)
Liked and left a comment. Love your vids!
Commenting to appease the algorithm god. Another great vid Marcel!
Love these vids
Another great video! 👌
Maximum funding. Roller coasters and thrill rides only. Enough said
Maximum Funding. Roller coasters and thrill rides only. No items. Final Destination.
@@lagg1e You forgot the "Fox only." that goes at the end.
I knew about the pre-set order years ago back with the original, there was a mod to download that allows you to edit save files like what rides are available, cash, scenario, and the order of the research
I may no absolutely nothing about this game... but I adore your accent :)
Yay a new video
I didn't realize this many people didn't know that research was a set order; just replaying a scenario once or twice and you notice it pretty quickly. I'm actually a bit shocked you didn't know that with how much RCT you've played. Either way it was still a great video as always and helps educate those who aren't aware of how research works.
Well, he _did_ know, otherwise he wouldn’t’ve made a video on it. He just says he didn’t know for “a very long time”, which coulda been _only_ several years.
@@Schwarzorn True, my over tired brain interpreted it as he found out recently, not that he just didn't know for a while. Now that you brought it up, I seem to recall him mentioning it in a video a while back, though I don't recall which one it was.
I'm probably missing something here, but your calculations after 0:49 seem to be based on there being 250 days in a year? Since RCT shows an actual Gregorian calendar in-game, surely there are 365 days in a year, not 250? Sorry if this is a common question.
RCT2 skips from the 31st of October to the 1st of March, so there are 245 days in a year.
@@MarcelVos Ah, thanks for explaining.
I know this is an older video but I've just discovered your channel and have been watching a lot of it (it's great stuff!) Maybe I missed it, but what happens if you have a specific category for research enabled and then research all eligible options in that category? Will it start giving you other types that you're not researching for? Or just stop giving you anything until you allow it to
And we always thought is was random. Cool trick Chris Sawyer. :D
Would it be possible to talk about some of the research mechanics in RCT1? For example, in RCT1 Forest Frontiers, you can start with either the Miniature Railroad or the Monorail and I *think* it is randomly decided, but this doesn't seem to happen with OpenRCT2.
nice video, al those years i was thinking it was random, now i see its not.
now i need to find a site or list for each level in classic RCT and RCT2 what will come out first
sometimes i have research on for almost 1 in game year, and i still don't get the rollercoaster i wanted and then there are no more coaster to invent
Interesting, although I do remember some randomisation in the starting attractions list in rct1 forest frontiers. (Such as random selection of transport rides or stalls like candyfloss)
Is that related?
Glad to know level devs can be just evil with research order if they wish. Lol.
I never thought it was random. Probably because I tended to play the same scenario and noticed that I would unlock things in the same order each time.
Very interesting!
What happens when you change funding midway through? Is the total time then the weighted average of the two (or three) funding levels?
Probable a research bar that changes speed depending on research level.
Because a team of engineers can easily support their family *and* purchase the necessary software and materials to conduct their research on a measly $100.00-$400.00 per month. Even though a new hire at his/her very first job is probably going to make at least that much in his/her first month of employment and make more as he/she gains experience and moves to better opportunities.
And, of course, every Ferris wheel or carousel manufacturer can sell those things for $300 each and stay in business....
The game drops a lot of zeroes from pricing...and thank goodness for that.
@@PaulCashman Time to fix that bug.
Thank you!
Marcel Vos: Watch that video after this one.
Me: I think I'll do it the other way around.
In scenarios without money in the base RCT 1 and 2, is the research there set to Normal Funding or Maximum Funding?
Because you can't change the research funding in those scenarios as the menu option in unavailable due to well, not using money in that scenario.
It seems to default to max.
the fact that the research is represendet by a beaker with bright red liquid is funny
like are rides created from bubbly chemicals? or do you have to conduct blood sacrifices?
Oh dang, Cody Watkins is in a RCT Facebook group I’m in! Small world.
I didn't know what that beaker was as a kid, so I assumed it was some kind of tasty potion!
Before watching your videos I really didn't know a lot about RCT2 even though I played it a lot as a kid. I did however know that the research wasn't random, probably due to playing the same scenarios over and over again.
One question:
When exactly is the ride chosen: a) Start of Initial Stage or b) Start of Design Stage?
In other words: Can you switch up your priorities while in Initial or not?
I was wondering this too.
Start of design stage.
Is it correct that if you say, only selected stalls, then unlocked all stalls, it starts to unlock everything else?
It seems that checkbox is priority rather than a whitelist.
my programmer brain is loving this
2:54 Nice.
0:45 Cody Watkins 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Marcel deserves maximum funding
What happens when you run out of all the researchable items in that category and only choose that category?
Could you do any vids on RCT1?
Nice Video Sir
What happend if for example i select only roller coasters, but i already researched all roller coasters?
You can't select a category that's been fully researched. It will automatically be deselected once you research the last item in it.
You're the man
Can you do a video on what effect each type of Marketing has on your park?
I always figured it was predetermined as researching shop and stalls almost always gave info kiosk as the first one which seemed unlikely if it was random
I knew it was not random in a custom made park without money. When I played that scenario, I remember always getting the 3D cinema first
So where is it recommended to but the ticks? Just as you desire or is there a good strategy?
For scenario play scenery is obviously useless, and if you have a food stall, drinks stall, info kiosk, toilet, atm, and first aid stall you have enough stalls as well. The other things really depend on what you want as you can beat any scenario with almost any ride.
I would always uncheck scenery and gentle rides at least. Often I would only have roller coasters and thrill rides checked.
U are 100 % sprit of the law rct 💪
What happens if you research only one type of ride, and then eventually have all of them researched? Is it automatically going to start researching everything else you haven't selected yet?
Pretty much. It'll go to the next item at the top of the queue once that category is done. It's probably a way to stop people from wasting money on research because they forgot to tick the other categories.
But what if I, let's say, only researching Gentle Rides.
What happen if I researched anything in one category?
Will the game tell me there is nothing left? Do I have to memorize every single ride and thing?
Can I even always unlock everything in every scenario (Theoratically at least)
2:55 - Nice park
OHH. Research IN RCT2! I thought this would be about researching RCT2 or something. I'm so dumb.
2:55 Nice park.
