- The Holiday season is upon us, and many people are unsure what to do with their dragon or other reptiles. This video will offer some suggestions that you can use to help make a choice as to what you will do for your scaly friend while you are away on vacation.
Even though the video is geared towards dragons, the same tips can be applied to other reptile species as well, such as colubrid snakes, leopard geckos, some tegus, and more.

I'm learnings a lot with you guys,we got my son a bearded dragon 3 month ago and I can tell you that she's alive because of you. We didn't do research, I didn't know what was I getting myself into, I didn't even handle any reptile before( I was terrified) but since I'm the one who ended up taking care of her,she is my baby,I love her so much,I just want to do my best to not mess up her growth. I too can attest to the soundness of this advise. We travel with reptiles, and use these very same techniques to travel in the winter and we always shut the lights off during the weekend when away doing shows.
Dad swears that the baby dragons grow during the lights of weekends.

I've always wanted a beardie, and had no idea about their hibernation. Looks like I need to do some more reading up on them, but that solves such a huge problem with what to do with them during vacation!!

I know it is a no brainer, but remember to put some air holes in the plastic container or cooler or both if you use both that you put any animal in to. Love your videos....some show we will meet.

Hi I'm getting a bearded dragon very soon and even tho we dont plan to travel for a couple years it's always good to know this stuff just incase

As full time RVers we have worried that’s we might be harming her by moving so much but she seems to love travel days... we have microwaved towels to keep her warm but those don’t last long... we are moving n a few days and once we get settled I will be ordering some of those heating pads!!

I’m planning on going up to my parents house in Indiana for three days over the weekend next week, I have a little carrier for my Dragon but was curious can I just use those uniheats? Or does she absolutely need me to bring a heat lamp? I don’t have an enclosure up at my parents house and I would rather not bring her full set up.

When my family is gone and know one in my house to take care if my beardie we normally have our close family friend take care of him and he knows what he’s doing so no worries about his health

Questions: from what age would it be OK to hybernate?
Also, once back from the holiday, how is it best to "stop" hibernation? In stages, in about 2 weeks, just like "sending" them to hibernation? Letting them to have more and more light each day? Thank you!!
We just turn the lights and heat back on all at once. But nothing wrong with doing it slowly over a few days.
I’m going on vacation and I recently moved to a new area and I don’t have any friends or family nearby to watch my bearded dragon and don’t feel comfortable dormanting my dragon. Any recommendations for a travel tank for my bearded dragon to fit in a sedan?
I really want to get a beadie within the next few weeks but i’m in school right now and travel back and forth on some weekends and go home on the breaks so I want to make sure I’m prepared before I get my baby

What if its summer and brumation already happened during winter. Is it possible or even good to induce another brumation period in summertime? I wanted to go out of state for a week.
What about auto-feeders for short vacations. I would be able to feed my dragon on day 1 and day 3 but would be relying on the auto-feeder for day 2 and while I am gone. How about herbs or plants for an adult beardie?
I'm glad I came across this video! The person who was supposed to watch our dragons (we have four) backed out. We're leaving in a week and a half, so hopefully that's enough time to hibernate them before we leave...

I have a 9 month old bearded dragon and Im in georgia and im going to colombia for a week or 2. i dont know what to do
Also check with the place you board your dog. My kennel also boards small animals and reptiles. Also I’ve used the hand warmers from the sporting goods store but I put it in a oven mitt about an hour before I get my beardie ready to travel. Not as good as your recommendation but works in a pinch.

In terms of hibernation the video says you should not feed the reptile for up to two week to empty their stomach. If that is the case, why can't you just leave for a week or two and not give them food. Leaving the lights on timers like normal? Why push them into hibernation at all?
Mine goes with me..but he’s got a lot of luggage to tote along.
We go on weekend trips once a month- like 2-3 nights- can we put our baby in a small container with the small heat packs for that long? (Obviously keeping an eye on it- and making sure she doesn’t get too cold!)

LOL if only I would've watched this like 5 months ago. I took Oobi (my beardie) to my grandparents house with me. Everyone kept calling him an alligator....?wait..wha?...then one of the nurses that come by the house saw him and screamed at the top of her lungs and ran around in circles because she was so freaked she forgot where the front door was....Soooo, yeah...not the best of forward thinking moments...Now everyone in my fam thinks I'm crazy since they saw my 6 year old (5 at the time) petting him while he chilled on her lap. (Oobi is about a year and some change) I'd clearly forgotten that beardies aren't small lizards. He's just apart of our fam so he'll always be my little Oobi....to me! I found out...that seems to only apply to me...Not my grandparents LOL
LOL! That's funny, one of our dragons was referred to by family as "the little alligator" while we were visiting at their house. I guess we can't ALL like the same things, haha!

does the hibernation method also work with adolescent dragons? I know you said no babies but my dragon is just under a year? I am just curious sorry maybe a dumb question.
Not a dumb question at all! We don't recommend hibernation for adolescents. Bringing it with you or having someone look after it would be better.

You can. I personally like paper or hard packed dirt.

Hi, this doesn’t have anything to do with the video, but I really need your help. My female beardie has been acting different for a while now, she has a curved back, in the shape of a C, and it’s almost as if her back legs are paralyzed, she also hasn’t shed in a very long time. I’m getting extremely concerned for my baby. I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

Yes. Especially if it is real cold...
@@ColdBloodCreations it's going to be cooler here then usual, but I'm in Orlando, it's rarely actually real cold here. Their enclosures will stay warm with just the heat lamps and they will have natural lighting from the windows

I like the artificial hibernation advice but you didn't mention how to bring them out of it. Do you just turn the lights back on and warm them up or is there a method that is more conducive to their health and wellbeing?

Hand warmers use oxygen as a catalyst to heat up. How do you make sure your bearded dragon has enough oxygen to breathe?
They don't use THAT much oxygen. There is PLENTY left over for the dragon. We have shipped animals in small boxes all the way to Beijing China and never lost one with this method.

Yes. One thing that we HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend is a good quality gut load. It is an insect food LOADED with protein, vitamins and minerals that are essential for a healthy dragon. Feed it to the insects right before offering them to the dragon to "gut load" the insects, and all that added nutrition will be passed along to your dragon. It will cool down too fast. It only stays warm for a few minutes.

A 20 can work for a short time, but the dragon will outgrow it very quickly. We recommend starting with a larger tank, if you are able.
Hello I love your video if anybody sees this or if you do I have a male bearded dragon full grown I think it’s in hibernation stage she doesn’t wanna eat anything tomorrow I’m going to my brothers house for Christmas Eve and then I will be back home the next day I don’t know what time the next day but with my bearded dragon be OK being home for one night and if so when I leave can I leave the lights on for him until I get back tomorrow

@@ColdBloodCreations Rosa is my rescued bearded dragon. She is mentally challenged due to inbreeding and improper diet during her first year of life. Even during brumation she will wake up and "get stuck" in her habitat. Yes, she is also a diva.
