- When we met Tyler Hoover of @HooviesGarage in Monterey Car Week, we discussed the possibility of buying his Salvage Ferrari 458. Well, we came to a deal and we're getting him hooked up with a 599 conversion, and we bought the Hoopty 458. So I drove up to Kansas to pick up the Ferrari and check out all the things wrong with it... And there's a LOT wrong with it.

I think the 458 would make a great project for you guys, just like a certain Lamborghini would have if the dealer didn't screw you (you were extremely lucky not getting that car btw since it needed a full engine rebuild recently)

I love that you guys don't mind high mileage cars. My first gen viper is nearing 90,000 miles. I've been driving the hell out of it. And my Jalpa will be getting a TON of miles once it's back on the road. More fun to drive them. Also the "It was wrecked in a ditch and put back together by apes" LOL

This is the perfect car. It is messed up enough and high enough mileage that you can drive the piss out of it and not worry about depreciation. I would daily it for sure.

"Scammed" would mean that Hoovie was not completely honest......If he's telling you everything he knows about the car and selling it to you cheap, why are you spending the entire test drive nit-picking?.... You drove a long distance pulling a trailer knowing exactly what you are getting and grinning like a teenager that just got lucky..... Scammed?... I don't think so!

At the end of the test drive, you could tell Hoovie is like “ok..lighten up Francis” Every comment was on the fence. Which way will he go with this sentence? How many time is he going to back up on top of a double negative? Great episode, just a bit uncomfortable to watch a car sale on camera

You titled this video “Did we get scammed by Hoovies Garage?” There’s very little acting going on at 9:05 when you hit the speed bump. That set the tone of the drive, would you agree? Then you say “Oh wow..something’s weird there” and Hoovie’s body language is speaking VOLUMES (acting or not) and I agree with your assessment of the paddle (although I do not own a Ferrari 458) until ... At 9:19 he takes the camera and points it right at the paddle, you can’t tell me that he was acting there. He was as genuine as I have ever seen him and a bit uncomfortable.. a natural reaction to a nit pick. You even say “Well I’m just noticing things.. It’s not terrible” From that point you are trying to like the car, until the point at 12:02 and at that moment, you can see his “Lighten up, Francis” face, and now he knows what you’re all about. “Just close your eyes and drive” is his Genuine reaction to 4 nit picks in a row, YES..the car doesn’t belong at Pebble Beach, we know.
There is no criticism on your part, you are trying to buy a beaten down Ferrari. But you have to admit, Hoover was a bit annoyed. I am putting myself in your shoes AND Tyler’s shoes.

Just don't like that engine note from Ferrari, it just sounds like a go cart. It disappoints me greatly that Hoovie didn't talk about that beautiful 40's job in the back like it wasn't the most beautiful car in the room.

I don’t know if I buy anything with wheels it gets drove.. It’s almost like some people buy car like that just to say they have one. If I had the money to get one it would be daily driven.
Sadly most people with these cars don't daily drive them
the cars are quality, Even if in disrepair, the vast majority of its life it has been pampered. They could possibly have a ridiculous record of high miles on the motors like toyotas, but everyone loves them too much. And it's not fun driving sweet cars in traffic and around other people, so you end up just not driving them a lot regardless anyway

I would think Hoovie would be one of the best guys to buy from. Appears he has an attention to detail and he sends them to a mechanic to have it looked over, and he pays the bills to even fix minor things. A lot of these youtube guys hardly put any miles on the cars and fix the issues themselves. In all honesty, who can really drive the car as little as some of these guys do and not notice all the nit-picky issues.
Trust me, most Ferrari buyers are pretty darn nit-picky.

If I might play heretic....what makes this car worth $ 150k (or whatever you paid for it)?
Many years ago I had a 308 GTB & found it to be the most OVER-RATED POS I ever owned. Gutless, unreliable & most significantly..utterly boring even compared to 1970's cars (the nader of auto performance). I described it as a poor devise to carry around a prancing horse hood ornament.
I don't see how they have improved much (for their sub $ 1m cars). Considering what can be had NEW for the same money with significantly more performance & quality I am baffled as to why you buy them.
It's not worth 150k.
