    Regarding the video out on the new Game Boy FPGA handheld, I got to try it out briefly at Socal Retro and according to the booth organizer they do mention that there is a touch of lag when displayed on a TV, however they claim that the intenton is that the player looks at the display on the unit and the video out is for others to watch and spectate or even use as a method of capturing video as seen in the sponsored CTWC tournament (featuring Logan Paul of all people?!?). Can't really give concrete numbers or anything since I only breifly tried the unit on a whim but we'll find out sooner than later.

      I couldn't agree more, I'd of been interested in something like the Evercade VS if it had Y/C or RGBS/VGA output, or even just a USB-C with Display-Alt Mode which carries native analogue VGA output, which can be easily output to RGB or SOG (sync-on-green) 240p via a VGA to Scart, DP-Alt Mode can do RGB up to 1600x1200p, if only more modern GPU's had DP-Alt Mode as well, sadly only the RTX 2080 Ti cards and some models of the RTX 3080 Ti had USB-C DP-Alt outputs for native VGA.

    The NES actually has much more interesting audio versus the SNES imo (which can only do sequenced samples), especially the enhanced games with VRC6 & VRC7 audio expansion chips, that PSG real-time synth has just aged beautifly, so has the OG GB chip-tune audio, the GBA has better audio than the SNES when playing on a GC GBA player or MiSTer GBA core, but the master of them all is the Model 1 Sega Mega Drive, that FM-Synth is just silk, it's never gets old, I have a few Mega Drive music albums or real MD cartridges, and they are just so good, FM music just really manages to catch that sweet spot for perfect melodic sound, there is also OPL2/3/4 FM-Synth audio for PC & Amiga (Adlib), I'm hoping to pick up a OPL3 Duo when its in stock to hook up to my MiSTer, I also love XG & GM MIDI audio, though it's hard to choose between the PC & Amiga versions of Monkey Island games and other amazing Sierra & Lucas Arts games, and after MIDI audio in games we got the incredible multi-positional HRTF audio aka A3D & EAX, games like Max Payne 1 & 2 completely put modern game audio to absolute shame, the audio is part of what brings the atmosphere in the game t life, you can hear the rain drops bouncing of glass panes windows and the ceilings whilst mobsters banter in various rooms in the distance, and it's all so perfectly placed and realistic, you can hear sirens and cars out on New Yorks streets or the snow blizzard beating against the walls, tell me a modern game with audio of that calibre today, sadly there just isn't, audio in video games has regressed to generic flat sounding PCM stereo that at best can be software up-mixed to Dolby Digital or Dolby Atmos, which ironically, Atmos is Inferior to the hardware accelerated Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect audio up-mixing that were available in the Creative X-Fi chipsets, now it's all low quality audio codecs that use software mixing that doesn't sound as good as full hardware based surround, but nearly no games use hardware accelerated HRTF game engine level multi-positional sound any more, and games are also becoming very laggy now with seriously unoptimized engines (Street Fighter 6 has 92ms frame-times versus sub 5ms for SF4), so it's just not bad regressed audio technology and quality any more, its low input fidelity and heavy motion blur as standard with modern games, lol, sorry for the rant I'm a little stoned.

    If only the new Chromatic Game Boy used an OLED display, because as far as IPS GB's, the GBC with the ITA LCD is so much better than the cheap LCD in the Chromatic, and they are charging over £160 ($200) when a real ITA GBC is only around 80 to 100 pounds tops, or for a little extra you can get a real GBC with an AMOLED display and its real hardware, or even a GBA with an ITA IPS is only around 100 pounds, so you are so much better off getting a real GBC with an OLED display or a GBA with an ITA display and enjoying perfect compatibility, audio & video timings thanks to real hardware.
    If the Chromatic was only say £49.99 or even less, I'd say it's a no-brainer, but you can get two real GBA's with amazing ITA displays for the price of the Chromatic, or for not much more an Analogue Pocket lol, which has much more functionality, a better GB/GBC FPGA core and a much better audio DAC, which is another point btw, the Chromatic has a very low quality DAC, so they haven't even given it decent audio hardware for that 200 bucks, this is a low quality cheap GBC with a cheap speaker, it makes no mention of having a proper headphone AMP either, I mean the MiSTer handheld will be under £160/$200 and will have an AMOLED display, 24-Bit RGB, 24-Bit audio DAC and I assume a proper headphone AMP, and the MiSTer has a 1:1 parity OG Game Boy core with perfect reference chiptune audio, same goes for the GBC core, I'm not sure if the GBA core is a perfect 1:1 core like the GB & GBC is yet, but it's pretty close if not as I can't tell the difference between a real GBA and the MiSTer GBA.
    In fact, the MiSTer fixes the GBA's audio issues that you get on real GBA hardware, due to the low resolution audio DAC, the GBA actually has really stellar audio being put out by the GBA's processor, as well as the GB's & GBC chiptune/PSG generator, the GBA can use them all, but the real GBA & GBA-SP has an awful 8-Bit DAC, which destroys the otherwise amazing GBA soundtracks, which is why GBA games sound so incredible on the GC GBA player, as they use the GC Macronix DAC (a powerhouse audio chip), thus showing that the GBA has better audio than the SNES when using a proper DAC, also in part to do with the GBA's bigger game file size so can use larger samples, and having access to that beautiful sounding GB chiptune chipset for PSG synth, this could have been an amazing modern plug & play out of the box GBC option, as well as a great way to get improved audio quality if it had a HQ HP-AMP output.

    • @RAHelllord
      @RAHelllord 25 днів тому +2

      You're missing the point of the Chromatic LCD, it's on purpose "cheap" looking to ensure it has correct color balance and automatically displays colors like an original screen, instead of showing RGB values like the other offerings do. The closest we currently have to that are shaders, be it Analogue's GBC filters, retroarchs shaders, or BGB doing the color correction.
      An OLED display would not be any closer to the original screen than an IPS display that's properly calibrated. The other thing is the Chromatic IPS is made by some aviation display makers, specifically so it can have ridiculous brightness so it'll be very easy to see even in direct sunlight, something that OLED can't do yet, and if it does will drastically shorten it's lifespan.
      All in all I think IPS is the better choice here for brightness and longevity without degradation, even if the blacks will suffer a little.
      I do agree on the price tag being pretty damn high though, but $50 alone wouldn't even cover the magnesium shell of the thing.

    • @Wobble2007
      @Wobble2007 25 днів тому

      @@RAHelllord I did consider that, and totally get your point, but that's why I rate the glass laminated ITA IPS display so much, you can get a GBC or GBA with one for £70 new now, and it also comes with the audio AMP upgrade and has a really decent HP-AMP, you can choose between the GBA or GBC and have real hardware with proper audio & video timings, the glass ITA screens are incredible imo, and I just can't see why you would spend over twice as much on an FPGA with a lower quality screen, those brightness levels will really hinder colour luminance levels and will really cause colour volume to drop I would have thought, IPS just can't put out a decent contrast without being washed out, unless it's using a miniLED IPS, which may be enough to give it decent colour volume, I'd like to see a dual-IPS, that would actually outperform OLED, you can get decent sub 5 inch IPS modules for under 10 bucks or half that at bulk cost, so two of them would still be very cheap, just an idea, but seriously, £160/$200 is just too much when the TangPrime 25K FPGA handheld that does GB/GBC/GG/NES/SNES/GBA with immaculate 1:1 FPGA cores under £60, you can buy the GBA ultimate with USB-C charging, upgraded speakers and audio amps for £100, honestly I'd not have anything to critique it for if it was sensibly priced under £80/$120.

    • @RAHelllord
      @RAHelllord 25 днів тому +2

      @@Wobble2007 I think luminance might not be an issue considering the standard GBC screen is already fairly washed out, and this display aims to recreate that faithfully. All the current solutions, bar Analogue Pocket with filter, BGB, and retroarch shaders, are far oversaturated compared to what they should be.
      Under that viewpoint, that the imperfection is intentional, it makes sense.
      Granted, I'm not really trusting the claims so far, Palmer has a history of stretching the truth in places for the products he makes, but it at least makes logical sense in that it should be possible. Though we'll have to wait and see.
      One other thing, it's not an of the shelf screen, but custom made. One of the small differences is that the subpixel layout is identical to the original GBC screen, including size, order, and orientation. It's not a huge difference and it becomes less relevant with higher PPI screens, but it should ensure proper aspect ratios and everything without any potential for shimmering. But again, those are unverified claims right now, though at least the macro shot the dude published seems to confirm that.
      If you have an account on GBAtemp, or are a member of the FPGAming Discord, then I've actually posted some comparison macro shots of the Chromatic display and every GBC capable device I own, including that ITA screen in a GBA, but also the HighspeedIDO, Analogue Pocket, stock GBA SP, the new OLED GBC, and some others. My name over there is R.A.Helllord, and GBAtemp should be publicly indexed by google.
