Having owned and sold the 46 because it was slightly awkward on the wrist, I knew the 43 was just what I was looking for. Had mine 2 months now and love it
The 43 has certainly now crashed onto my Radar, I love simple easy to read watches. It's very interesting to get the feedback from the designer as well. I do wonder if IWC will release a non-stick version carrying the designers proven skills in frying pan design over to the modern mechanical pilots watch.
Well done as usual! I was so fascinated by this presentation, as I have owned my Big Pilot 43 for only a couple of days. There are so many features of this watch including the proportions and design of the dial that make it unmistakably a brand new model. People can say what they like, but it is just so evident that a ton of research and development has indeed gone into this watch. Not just the case, the straps and bracelet as well. When I received my watch the other day, I was told that the quick change strap now has another modification: the clasp is now quick change as well. Proud to be the first owner of that one in town! Yes, IWC is making constant improvements. Can't wait to see what is next! Thanks for your usually outstanding presentation! Cheers, Carl
I believe I was the first one in the US to take acquisition of this piece -blue dial on blue leather strap. IWC has stated that demand for the watch was so high that the initial shipments lacked the owner's manual. There was a production delay on the booklets and since IWC didn't want to delay getting the piece shipped to customers, they were void of the owner's manual. I picked mine up from my local AD months after taking delivery. Absolutely impressed with this piece. For those who've always loved the big pilot design but couldn't pull it off in 46mm, this is for you!
Very nice. As a long-time IWC fan it's really exciting to see them get their mojo back. They've been kicking goals these last few years! It's also great to see they're listening to their customers.
Wish it was a 40-41 instead. 43 doesn't really widen the market since 43 still isn't so wearable for a lot of wrists especially since IWC loves to put long lugs. Even their mk. 18 looks funny on some people because of the long lugs. Having small wrists, I'd probably go for the Laco flieger pro or Stowa klassik 40 even if I did have IWC Big Pilot money. Still love the Big Pilot though, just wish it was more accessible to smaller wrists. The mark series while great in its own right, just doesn't have as much magic as the BP.
I'm not personally sold on the onion crown, which is a vital part of the HAND-WOUND pilot watches, but seems out of place on a pilot watch with the words AUTOMATIC on it. I get that it's a vital part of its design, and heritage, but if form follows function as the video suggests, what is the function of the enormours, bulbus crown. It's FUNCTION is to allow pilots to wind the watch easily while wearing gloves and what not, but on this watch, its nothing more than form, and a nod to the brand's history. It seems to me that the opposite is true; form precedes function. (and yes, I understand the watch CAN be handwound as well, but the whole purpose of the automatic design is to eliminate winding) TL;DR: Wish this was a hi-beat handwound movement instead of automatic.
I’ve had a close look and this watch sits perfectly on the wrist. Perfect balance and the ratios all round are just right. Movement looks great. Strap options are very nice. In the fly bracelet adjustment just so. However I just wonder whether stripping down the design to just a three hander will make this watch a little boring to wear after a while. Sometimes the search for perfection strips away character and those marmite elements which lose both sides of the argument. The jury is still out.
Compared to some previous and current BIG Pilot models, this NEW BIG Pilot 43 is streamlined and simplified ! And, as we all know: Simplicitiy is the ultimate sophistication !
I'm guessing your paying for the movement. Watch looks great but that price for a stainless steel watch with no complications doesn't intrigue me valuewise.
Nah 40mm is too small for this model. Pilot’s watches are supposed to be big. 43mm is the sweet spot for this one. There’s plenty of 38-40mm choices if it’s too big for your wrist.
Hang on, the 7-day power resume movement was dropped from the 43mm BP because it can't fit? Yet it fits fine in the 43mm Portuguese automatic. Don't you mean, the 7 day PR was dropped from the 43mm because its meant to be handicapped compared to the 46mm?
The coolest thing about this watch is that it has the coolest history: it caused a war between the USA and Switzerland. True story. Or maybe not.
