    I saw my 1st IWC Big Pilot in Cancun at some big watch retailer 25 years ago and was in love with it. In the last 25 years I have looked at all the other pilot watches and could not pull the trigger on them knowing that it would not be that beautiful IWC Big Pilot UNTIL today…. I just purchased the 5010! It took 25 years, I love this Big Pilot watch!

    I just looked at some comments below. There are many true flieger watches to choose from. Laco and Stowa among others offer tradition, quality and value. However Teddy pointed out precisely that “If you want an IWC, get an IWC…” Watch collecting is based on a very subjective psychological process of taste and preferences. eBay is full of watches for sale unwanted by their owners because they settled for not exactly what they wanted. So please listen to the guy and follow your heart!

      I just wish Stowa put in some effort and did a central seconds flieger with a properly modified unitas movement with some decent finishing. I mean even Steinhart makes a central seconds modded unitas flieger, but Steinhart sucks for a few other reasons.

      Internet aviation experts like to bring up those brands on every IWC watch video. But coincidentally ignore Cartier Santos the first aviation watch, Lange's origins as a pilot watch etc. It's interesting that those people only are proponents of watches in their budget.

    • @sinjon
      @sinjon Рік тому +2

      Agreed. I purchased a Laco flieger thinking it woild scratch the itch of wanting an IWC, which I just couldn’t see spending that much on a watch with zero complications and just so “plain”. Turns out I still long to buy an IWC. I’ll probably get the XX at some point. This one is just too big for me

      But if you're not set on an IWC, it offers so little at that price point compared to offerings from almost every other brand. I mean look at what you can get from Omega for that price instead. Look what you can get from Zenith at that price... Or JLC. Look what you can get from so so many other brands for almost $10k.
      IWC is great at being IWC. Is it great at anything else?

      @@bdegrds why the fuck would I be a proponent of a Lange outside my budget? Anyway you may have money to spend on a watch but you don't seem very bright, Stowa, Laco etc get brought up because they have the usual ww2 german flieger aesthetics exactly like an IWC, a Cartier does not.

      I really like the Chronograph 41 but preferred the size of the older 43. All depends on the wrist size though. It's nice to see smaller/skinnier people having more watches available to them but they'd be daft to do away with the full-sized ones altogether. (Not that 41 is small as such though it's the smallest I can get away with - I had a Mark XVIII for a bit but it wore too small on my larger wrist. )

    My funds just won't allow procurement yet.
    Trying to get the same look of a small wrist, with a large one is quite hard. 200mm circumference.
    63mm Cross section.

    You pay a premium for the IWC name but you also get build and finishing quality that is in a league of it's own in this style of watch. Stylistically it is similar to what is offered by Stowa, Laco, etc and from a value for the money perspective they excel vs IWC as does Longines and others but no other brand makes a watch in this traditional pilot style that is close to what IWC offers. If a 5k-8k premium over similar style watches is worth it is a personal decision. Having owned a Stowa and tried on a few IWC pilot watches I would say the price premium for what you get is worth it "for me." I like the Big Pilot 43 but the Spitfire chrono is likely my next purchase unless IWC makes a no date Mark XX with an onion crown which is very very unlikely.

  • @i.p.g8428

    My 2 cents here. I've always loved the original Big Pilot but found the 46 mm (and its thickness) way too much for my 16.5 cm wrist without the need to even try the wacht on to verify. Early in the summer I had decided to add a new watch to my modest collection and the new 43 was a serious contender. This time I went to the IWC boutique and tried the 43 really hoping this was it, but it still wasn't. Don't get me wrong, the quality of the watch is remarkable, The finish on the dial and the hands beautiful, perfect legilibility and I liked the finish of the caliber and the quick change on the bracelet, but the size was still too big for my taste and the biggest regret I found was the direct comparison to the 46 mm with its much better caliber and the 7 days power reserve on the dial. I get the price difference, but the 43 is not a "cheap" watch by any means and it lacked the charm of its bigger brother. So finally I went a different route and the pilot will have to wait until IWC releases something 41 mm max that still checks all the boxes (looked at the mark XVIII and XX and they left me a little cold and also at the chronographs that I found excesively thick for their size).

Thanks Teddy for the great review. I've experienced myself with this Calibre 82100, it runs slow when you're not wearing it. If it's on the wrist everyday, I'm getting +2secs/day and it runs super accurate

    • @waterfordrs22
      @waterfordrs22 Рік тому

      The Augsburg is a good value for what it is. That said, both Laco and Stowa offer much better examples with respect to that theme. Laco offers models which are rather like modern day relics.
      I’m not all that up on the history of observation watches, which were relatively rare. They were worn by the navigator, huge and rather crudely finished aesthetically. Laco, they can get a person pretty close but not for the price of an Augsburg.
      The IWC Mark series and Big Pilots are much more refined. I prefer the smaller Mark versions. That refinement fits the price tag.
      Watches are built to be worn and regulated for multiple positions, most my watches seem to run more accurate when actively worn. +2seconds a day is pretty damned good though I’ve got two well regulated, non COSC watches with SW200’s in them that do as well.

But of course its not a solid habitual thing to that movement to change date with that level of precision. And I don’t see this happening again. I would really like to know three things:
    First:
    Is there any way to adjust the 4r36 so that the date ALWAYS changes between 00:00:00 and 00:00:01? (That's right, a second or two of precision.)
    Second:
    I have another seiko with the same movement but the date changes between 00:05:00 and 00:06:00, is there any way I can leave it a little closer to midnight? (I believe this question is a little more realistic)

    Is there any mechanism by any brand that changes the date in this way?? 00:00:00-00:00:01??

    I bought the blue dial one. I had the Mark XVIII Petit Prince but it was too small on my 8in wrist - the BP43 is like a grown-up version. I can get away with the BP46 and nearly bought one, but it's a bit of an affectation to wear something quite that big. The BP43 sits in my collection along witih a Tudor Black Bay Bronze (43mm), Longines Heritage Military handwound 1938 (43mm), Hanhart 417ES chronograph (42mm and wearing smallest), and Stowa Marine Original (41mm but all dial so wears bigger). I'm looking at selling the BBB, much as I love it, for the Zenith Chronometro Tipo Flyback (43mm) - I had this watch before and really miss it. However, in this company, including the Zenith, the IWC is head and shoulders above the rest as the best watch - stunning to look at, comfortable to wear - just one of the best watches out there. I mostly wear on the strap but the quick-change bracelet is utterly stunning. There's a current fashion for teeny-tiny of watches of 36mm and the like but with pieces like the BP43 around, there will always e something for full-size blokes to wear too.

    Walked into Cassetti in Florence fully expecting to take advantage of VAT and finally pull the trigger on a pilot chrono. Tried on ~6 other watches just for fun. The chrono just seemed too busy relatively and I lost the desire. Was really close on a Mark XX which I never considered. Ended up getting the Santos de Cartier which wasn’t really on my radar and I didn’t even know the black/black version existed. After looking more into this BP43 I’m glad I didn’t go with the Mark XX as I’m fairly certain this will be my next one. The onion crown and rivets and history behind the BP is too cool to pass up. I do wish it had the 120 hour power reserve though like the Mark XX.

    I love IWC so much. The Big Pilot 43mm is their way of introducing the Big Pilot to be more luxury than functional which was the entire purpose of the B-Uhr and The Big Pilot. I did like the 43mm on my wrist but if you want a "Big Pilot" then buy a Big Pilot (46mm).

  • @christopherperry6106
    @christopherperry6106 8 місяців тому

    There was a limited edition version of the Big Pilot with a power reserve indicator in a small window on the otherwise closed case back. That would be great for the 43 but with a transparent case back, this would keep the dial clear

    I'm glad that the Big Pilot 43 has an in house movement. For the extra money it's worth it. I don't like the mark series that have a $400 movement in a $4000 or so watch. I have a REF5002 big Pilot (first edition 2002) and what I like about it is the in-house movement and its dial is reminiscent of the 1940s pilot's watch dial. The 1940s watch is 55mm because it was a modified version of the cal 52 pocket watch with a sweep (centre) seconds hand.

    I understand that the term "pilot watch" is attached to this style of watch mainly because of its history. But for most pilots, a better "pilot watch" would be something more along the lines of a Longines Spirit Zulu Time. Being able to read local time and zulu time (Greenwich Mean Time, if you choose to set the second hour hand that way) off your watch is really, really handy. We don't necessarily need all the slide rule calculations offered by watches like the Breitling Navitimer; we have those functions on our electronics (or an E6B, if you don't like electronics). But ask pilots which watch would be more useful, and they will go for a true GMT every time.

    Yesterday, in the UK, I ordered a Longines Spirit 40 mm. I was able to negotiate a c £590 discount. At this price, for its quality of build, COSC certified mechanism, 100m water resistance and general "attractiveness"- it beats IWC as a quality pilots' watch.

Way below chronometric standards (yes I know it is not chronometer rated) but really, for that amount of money !! You didn't mention anti magnetic features ? The winder is too prominent, it will catch on clothing and dig into the back of any hand. I think many buyers will offer this watch for sale within a year of purchase.

    I LOVE IWC watches. Their designs are some of the best out there, especially their cases. That said, I don't think the value is there across most of their line. This is a $9k watch, and it has little to show for it. That's more than Omega and Grand Seiko, and equal to many Rolex models or the nicer Omega/GS models. With the other brands, I can point to the value. I just don't see it with IWC. The movement is nicer looking, but its accuracy is lacking and power reserve is only on par. The dial is very simple; looks great! But it doesn't have any interesting textures or applied logo/indices, no crazy hand polishing, etc. IWC bracelets are innovative, but that's a LOT of money for only nice looking movement and nice bracelet. Everything else falls shy of similar or cheaper competitors. Tough sell!

      Agree 100%. To have a watch at almost $10k and not to be COSC certified at the very least...or have the accuracy of a Spring Drive..is just profiteering at its finest. If you want a Big Pilot, get the OG size. If it’s too big, get a Mark series instead. The BP 43 doesn’t really cover the “in-between” IMHO. I wouldn’t be surprised if people who acquired the 43 would have buyer’s remorse after the honeymoon stage. YMMV 😊

    • @ams914
      @ams914 Рік тому +2

      Zero buyer's remorse. It's become my favorite watch. Much more practical than the 46, (slimmer, smaller). I still love the 46 though and one day will get that one, too, or after I sell the 43. Plus, getting to see what I consider to be the most beautiful movements you can get under 10k (I guess apart from GS) is a huge bonus. If anything, the 43 is the safe choice because the 46 is just so damn thick that you may get buyer's remorse for that reason. Who knows.

    Don't know if it relates to anyone else. But my thoughts on IWC:
    Like the look of some of thier watches. Especially the Mark series. But generally. Especially the Big Pilot, think they are over priced personally. Also it seems that like my experience with Panerai. The "in house" movement switch seems to be nothing special. Some of those accuracy levels are poor IMO. That puts me off too. But then I have an Omega AT 8900 as a daily. That's classy and super accurate. Puts most of these brands to shame frankly.
    So yes like the simple uncluttered dials. But you can get the same performance on Pilots style watches elsewhere, or better (Sinn maybe), for a lot less money.
    Shame, as if the movements were better, and the price more sensible. I would also certainly buy one.
