When the subtitle to Jimmy “Careful Girls he’s Engaged” came out I remember instantly John Lennon when the Beatles performed a subtitle appeared under John Lennon saying “He’s Married” 😂 and anyone can tell that this is a Beatles inspired scene. 🤟🏻
You got to love a lot of the reactions from some of the older audience members reacting to the screaming fans. A lot of them were just looking around with a "what the hell" look on their faces.
Yea, you just know they’re thinking “God Dammit, it’s just more boys with long hair banging around on their instruments! What’s so special about that? What is music coming to these days?!”
One thing I like about this movie is how each character resembles the personality of a Beatle. Their positions on each instrument are switched but Jimmy is Lennon, Guy is McCartney, Lenny is Ringo and T.B. Player is George. Very clever whether it was intended that way or not.
Tom Hanks also channels his inner Brian Epstein... wearing the Ray Bans, chewing gum, attentively surveying the audience rather than watching his band... teaching them what was once called "the Beatle bow." Bowing in unison and leaving the stage before the applause ends.
The Jimmy “Careful Girls he’s Engaged” screen shot may have initiated the bands break up, but by this point in the movie the Wonders have shot to a very high level of fame! Isn't it not uncommon for the media to make misrepresentations like this about people who are newly famous? The reality is that if Jimmy wanted to keep the band together, he would have dealt with the fact that when you are in the public eye, people will say things about you that you might not like...
The band was breaking up well before then. The bass player already left prior to The Hollywood Television Showcase performance to join the military, and becoming so big, so fast only magnified the differences in the band member's personalities. Jimmy felt isolated because he was the only one who saw show business for what it really was, but it didn't help he grew a massive ego and became insufferable. Money turned Lenny into someone self-indulgent and recklessly impulsive. Guy changed the least from money and fame, but that in itself made him grow distant from the other band members because none of their personalities meshed. It happens with a lot of young people who are friends in high school or college and grow apart as they get older.
@@thatsawrap5235 Jimmy just wanted the record label to showcase more of the songs he'd written and not just those in the recording label already owned. I wouldn't say that was a massive ego. From the very first contract they signed, he wanted to use more of those songs. As a songwriter, you can't blame him from being denied by a label that cares nothing about the group other than the money they generate in record sales, etc. what is peculiar is that after he quit and walked away, he formed another band, "The Heardsmen", and the same label picked him up. It's doubtful that a record label would ever sign anyone again after they'd broke a contract with them.
@@jeffburnham6611Jimmy’s enormous ego showed up many times. For example, in his insistence that his songs be played or recorded. He was a complete unknown-and, his instincts needed tweaking-if they’d played”That Thing You Do” as a ballad, it would not have been a hit. Guy was the one with the instincts, and he was the one who constantly thought about the band, not himself.
A lot of people don't know that they shoot an entire week's work a game show in a single afternoon/evening. Then they can strike the set and do something else in the same studio (often, but not always, another game show)
One of the nicest things about this film is how Tom Hanks channels his inner Brian Epstein... wearing the Ray Bans, chewing gum, attentively surveying the audience rather than watching his band... teaching them what was once called "the Beatle bow." Bowing in unison and leaving the stage before the applause ends.
The Beatles accuracy from this film as a parody : 1. Mr White as Brian Epstein parody, he's gay 2. The original drummer replaced as Best replaced with Starr 3. Carefull Girl He's Engaded copied John Lennon caption in Ed Sullivan : Carefull girl, he's married Last : T.B Player replaced with Wolfman without announcement at all. Parody of Paul Is Dead ? 😂
Also the jazz chord at the end mirrors the chord used in Twist and Shout along with the screaming before the solo, similar to when George starts playing.
It's kind of interesting to track the progression of the song throughout the movie. In the first performance, it feels raw and passionate, the twanging of the guitars was really beautiful. And in this final performance, it sounds overproduced and terrible. I don't know if that was intentional or not, but it's a really nice parallel to the arc of the band.
I was always bugged by how overproduced the song sounds, everything else is period correct but the song sounds like it was produced in 1996. I guess they wanted to sell the soundtrack but the song sounds anachronistic.
Whoever was responsible for putting that disclaimer under Jimmy’s name should have been fired. That employee started the ripples of the fallout between the Wonders.
not 2 mention shouldn't it have been told 2 him beforehand and for da fallout Jimmy was really 2 blame he only his love for Faye as an excuse for his songwriting when u love someone really love them don't use them for anything like money, entrance 2 a club, access 2 something important or whatever make it work.

Yes , Indeed hahahahahaha
The whole movie and the band itself is Beatles inspired

@@tommyl.dayandtherunaways820 and the strange thing is none of them had long hair.
Found this movie by accident back in 2008. Still one of my all time favorites, watch it again at least 4-5 times a year.
Lucky you, I can't find in any place
I love how Guy’s mom tries to quiet the screaming girls on the TV.
This was shot at CBS Studio 33 at Television City, home of "The Price Is Right",
A delightful movie
This movie is just so good. Everything about it is 😚 👌
Nonders sei que 500tarde fazendo bem por aqui quando

Now that u mention it....I can see that. Holy shit u got a damn good point! Love this movie and song!

Why the hell am I reading this exact same comment on every That Thing You Do video on UA-cam
this gotta be the most wholesome movie of all time
Guy’s family is too adorable ! ❤️
Wolfman...too scary...cracks me up 🤣🤣🤣
You UNPLUG and you RUN, RUN offstage. Smiling. Smiling of course.
NO encore!
Did I ever tell you guys you look great in black

The 60s years are the BEST!!!
IT'S MY ERA...
You can tell the singer def watched John Lennon play, look at his stance
2:48 Best Actress ever 👏👏👏
Hahaha the broadcast director clearly wanted a piece of Shades too, lol
Fun fact This version of That Thing you do was film live on stage where the Price is Right is still being filmed at the Bob Barker Studio in CBS
A lot of people don't know that they shoot an entire week's work a game show in a single afternoon/evening. Then they can strike the set and do something else in the same studio (often, but not always, another game show)
In this scene here you can really tell this is a nod to the beatles on ed sullivan
Ya think?
Look at the guitar that Jimmy is playing. Looks like one of George Harrison's, doesn't it?
Agreed!

The Beatles were far from a 1 hit wonder!
Serious upgrade for guitars from start of movie to Hollywood showcase
To all the one-hit wonders out there, Keep doing that thing you do, you never know
as presenter Fausto Silva would say, who knows, he does it live !!
It's so interesting watching the movie again and noticing Jimmy's character traits that culminate in this moment.
Fabulous ❤🎉❤ 🎉

❤ Nice music
Liv Tyler ... oh my gracious.
My favorite thing in the entire movie is the girl on the left at the very end.
Mine is the older black gentleman in the audience who can only, *barely*, tolerate the excessive enthusiasm of all the kids.
Agreed! She’s so extra lol
Soaking wet! Eyes and panties!
2:10 Jimmy gave Faye that look of anger.
0:07 Ringo drum roll
#JUSTICE4WOLFMAN
the story is old but this sound is a popular new hit that year!!
The Beatles accuracy from this film as a parody :

2. The original drummer replaced as Best replaced with Starr
3. Carefull Girl He's Engaded copied John Lennon caption in Ed Sullivan : Carefull girl, he's married

Parody of Paul Is Dead ? 😂
Irfan Abu Jundi Stu sutcliffe was the original Beatle before Paul. Paul used the be the guitar player before moving to bass
Also the jazz chord at the end mirrors the chord used in Twist and Shout along with the screaming before the solo, similar to when George starts playing.
The cameras are Norelco Pc 60 (or 70). When The Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan show, they were Marconi Mark IV.
Last lyrics to coda, you can replace it with "since I saw her standing there."
actually for John Lennon's line it was sorry girls, he's married.
The funny thing about this is that the dude that plays lenny is actually playing the correct chords lol
they learned how to play the songs in the show so it was authentic. none of them were musicians beforehand
He is, but he makes a glaring mistake at the 2:26 mark of the video and completely loses his place in the song. LOL
Great song. Anybody notice the bass player in the movie was Mr Papageorgio / Rusty from Vegas Vacation?
Ethan Embry is his name....
Noooo way!!!!!!! lol. I just looked-up that he filmed Vegas Vacation the following year but he looks 15 years older here.
Also Coyote in Grace And Frankie
Muito foda

The fallout for both the band and Jimmy and Faye's relationship was inevitable. All that disclaimer did was accelerate the process.
