since I have been having problems finding a program to use for something of this sort, this is great! going to give it a shot. thanks for explaining so well.
Hello! Congratulations for the video, it was very good and very well explained. Would you happen to inform the following characteristics of the video and processing? Video: 1- What gimbal angle did you use? 2- Did you use the video format as wide or 4:3? Processing: 3- Alignment, advanced. 4- Dense cloud, advanced. 5- Mesh, advanced. 6- Texture, advanced. Thank you very much!!
I can't remember the gimbal pitch used, been a little while. Went with the wide video. Sorry to say I don't remember all of my settings in Metashape for this one, it's been a while since I produced the video, and when I was done with the video I deleted the project.
@@AZ-Drone Hey Rich, I know there has been some time since the video. Have you tried adding other videos or photos from the ground to get the details missed at higher altitude? Thanks for sharing. Fiing to buy the program now!! :D
I think once you turn it into a 3d model, if you know a few dimensions of something in the shot (Truck length, door width, etc) then you can scale the whole thing based on that
Hi Rich thanks ever so much for putting these videos online I’ve been following your channel for a number of years and I’ve seen many parallel interests that I share with you and I can wish you nothing but current and future happiness and success all the very best from Chris
Have you ever tried to pull a Metashape model into a drafting software like Autodesk Revit? I work at an Arch/Engr firm and am trying to think of ways that I could implement my drone interest into my day job. I could see it being handy with expansion projects, where the architects are modeling an existing structure from scratch, so that they can then model the new addition, in order to show renderings of what the final project would look like.
Sorry for my extreme delay, this one slipped past me. Metashape allows for a lot of export options for models. I know that there are several videos and tutorials here on UA-cam about Metashape and Revit. I'd suggest checking some of those videos out. Also check out what file formats Revit can work with, and compare that to the export options Metashape has.
@@AZ-Drone I found one workflow that requires you to go through AutoDesk Recap first, and then create a .rcp or .rcs for Revit. I tried a OBJ file directly into Revit and it looked kind of wonky, lol.
@@JoeBoone82 Years ago I started looking into AutoDesk Recap myself. I was trying to find the best way to render models. I didn't spend enough time on the demo when I tested it.
@@AZ-Drone I guess if your client had wanted the 3d models for viewing, which file type and/or viewer would you have used to share the file with them? I imagine they would need software, or a web based brower, to open the .obj or whichever file you extracted from metashape? A fun one to play around with is Luma Labs AI. I would like to try a SkyBrowse model at some point in the near future as well.
Hi Rich, the video is very interesting and very well explained!!! Please, could you tell me how to generate an output of the 3D model to be able to view it in a browser and in Autocad? Thank you so much!!! Horacio
There are many outputs from Metashape. I usually use a PLY file, and upload it to Sketchfab (a service that hosts 360 models) so my clients can the model. There are outputs for CAD as well. If you're into 3D modeling there are many tools out there beyond just drone models.
there is no way to import an mp4 file correctly in my case, as it says "a media resource couldn't be resolved" Do you know the reason why and how to solve that? Thanks
KPRC is our regional airport here in Prescott. If you pop over to Skyvector.com you can see aeronautical charts across the US. And if you use their search tool for KPRC you'll see all the relevant information about the airport. Also, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University is here is Prescott, so we have a lot of student flight traffic here.
What's up with the transparent circle in the middle of the frame? Is shooting in 5.4K overkill(Air2S)? Any requirements with frame rate/shutter speed? I'm going to try this...I like it a lot. Thanks!
nice job. How would it cope with a 'fish eye' distorted camera footage (like from a gopro) ? would you use the raw video, or would you need to 'de-fisheye' it first ?
I haven't tried it with a fish eye like the GoPro. Could be an interesting experiment to see how Metashape handles it. Here's one thing I do know. Metashape is more than a program for drone modeling. People have been doing photogrammetry before drones hit the market place. I've seen some amazing models generated with ground based cameras as well. So I wonder how wide or distorted the images could be going into Metashape. Would be an interesting experiment to walk around the home with a GoPro and see what gets generated.
@@AZ-Drone Well, I flew and filmed with a RunCam Orange 5 (about same fish-eyeness factor, as a cheap GoPro equivalents). The 3d model got generated. A bit skewed, but that may have to be fixed by tweaks in the Metashape. Still, quite impressive, for the little effort required :) Next I may try to program area scan, to fly in parallel lines. See what that produces.
I had a request to film a road for evaluation purposes and i tried to import it n follow steps you showed but the result was horrible n i wonder if there is something that i missed n if i do need to take a reference ground control points as well if i have a multiple videos so i can work with every single video in a chunk n stitch them together for final result
In the case of documenting a road I'd probably lean toward doing a model with Drone Harmony or Map Pilot Pro to generate an orthomosaic model. Unlike orbiting a house where we have a point of interest, a road probably wouldn't come across well. How long is this section of roadway?
Would this technique also work for video taken from a typical grid pattern flight? Can you choose the image selection rate -- roughly how many minutes of video produced 60 images? Thanks for a very interesting video.
Yes, absolutely, this would work. In the Metashape video import you can vary the frames, and you should test it out as I can remember which setting makes more images, and which makes fewer. Be sure to make a folder for the Video Import images to be stored. I forgot one time and had several hundred PNGs saved to my desktop. Whoops. 😀
I have worked with models in Blender, but I have not done any work with Unreal engine. I use Metashape and WebODM for generating models, and the big part for Blender would be making sure I've exported the models in a format Blender will be happy with.
I downloaded this app to my MAC Book Pro... But I am having huge problems.... It crashes constantly... I haven't been successful with one model yet.... Is there a setting or preference you may have some insight into that may need to be changed? My MAC is 7+ years old now so that might have an impact... Other software I am trying (learning with) WebODM, DroneDeploy, SkyBrowse, doesn't seem to have this issue so I am curious if I may have missed something.
Sorry to hear its crashing on you. I have used it on a 2017 iMac, and been able to produce small models (turning everything else off). But super slow. On my Mac Studio M1 with 32GB of ram it works very well. But on a 7+ year old Mac? Not sure it will work very well unfortunately.
Very impressive! Is all the processing you show in this video achieved with a Mac Studio (I'm asking just to have a reference)? Was this example entirely done with MetashapePro Standard edition?
This processing was done on a Mac Studio. I also just tested this morning on my old iMac that has the Standard Edition of Metashape as well. You can import from video to the standard version. Just don't try it on my old iMac as it is a "little slow". Running this model on the Mac Studio? Yeah, nice and quick!!!

It could be the version is the issue. I know the latest version has come out recently, and I haven't updated yet but plan to soon. Just need to find a little time between projects to test out the latest. Normally I align photos first, then generate the dense point cloud second. Under the workflow, what items are there?
