I used to work in a psychiatric unit and 30 years ago, they all would have been inpatients. Sadly our mental health system is lacking these days and they allow these types of people to live amongst common society, when clearly they need to be assessed and medicated.

I didn't agree with them, but I at least could understand why they believed what they did. These woke clowns have basically a secular faith based belief system, but endlessly and proudly skirt around any type of logic and couldn't care less how completely absurd and unfalsifiable their statements are. The new left has created a religion for itself. And the real irony is, they don't even notice. My take away from those experiences is if you aren't willing to subject your views to any scrutiny, they aren't worth my time to entertain in the first place.

I’m just trying to understand the whole situation, because it seems like an interesting topic to discuss. I definitely know that there are hardcore religious zealots, but I would imagine that (much like the political landscape) most people are very moderate in their willingness to discuss religious views. It would be a difficult topic to debate because religion is based on faith, which by definition means that people (for the most part) can only backup their arguments with things they believe through faith. No one can prove or disprove the existence of God. Again, I’m just curious as to the “why” in regards to debating religion.

I never sought out religious people in some "debate me, bro" fashion though. I was and always have been a curious person. I like to inquire, and consider things as deeply as I can. To figure out why people think what they think, or believe what they believe. I'm like the kid who asks "why" repeatedly because I seek to understand. Not fundamentally "win", or anything like that. I guess you could say I'm more Socratic by nature. I've had ups and downs in my own personal view of religions. I can see their positives and negatives. Ultimately, I just enjoy thinking about complicated stuff. I enjoy logic, reasoning, exchanging ideas, seeing what makes someone tick. Back when I was debating a lot with religious people, at was only those who voluntarily came to atheist pages online. I never went to religious ones. I'd have discussions with religious solicitors knocking on my door, or protesting, or handing out their material. I figured if they're going to advertise their belief system in such a way, they must be willing and ready to discuss why they have such beliefs. Kind of like trying to sell a product. If you expect someone to spend their hard earned money on your product, you can't reasonably expect them to just have no level of skepticism. Convince me to buy it. Most religious people are just chillin, living out their lives, and I might have a more relaxed conversation with someone like that about religion, if at all. The average joe type guy or lady who goes to church or something, and thats that. I always did my best to try to remain civil and respectful. I wasn't interested in trolling or being a malicious hypocrite. I just wanted to sharpen my thinking and reasoning. I learned a lot of useful things from all that interaction. Its also trained me to spot good and bad reasoning. The hallmarks of faith systems, fallacies, and the biggest take away being that if you aren't willing to try to explain/defend your position, it doesn't deserve my consideration to begin with. Specifically in regard to protesters or solicitors. Which is why the woke type who hold up their signs, but then say stuff like "it isn't my job to educate you", just masks me want to laugh in response and say "then I couldn't care less what your views are, or what your signs say. Have a nice day". These people aren't serious about changing the world in a positive way. They're just doing what they're told without thinking. Their beliefs are paper thin. Although its structured very similarly to a religion, I've met many religious people with pretty good and well thought out reasons to believe what they do. So at least I can have some sort of reapect for them in that sense. In the majority of cases though, it has repeatedly boiled down to faith. A fear of death is a big motivator too. A lot of religious people seem to have a very difficult time finding a source of morality outside of a religious foundation, and are terrified at the idea of ceasing to exist. I used to work in a psychiatric unit and 30 years ago, they all would have been inpatients. Sadly our mental health system is lacking these days and they allow these types of people to live amongst common society, when clearly they need to be assessed and medicated.

I used to debate with religious people on a few pages. Not formally on a debate stage, but it got very extensive, involved dissecting sources, arguments, counter arguments, and a lot of complex thought. The religious people I debated with for years are so similar in how they think as these far left activists, but the traditionally religious ones had better thoughts and were actually willing to articulate their thoughts. I didn't agree with them, but I at least could understand why they believed what they did.
These woke clowns have basically a secular faith based belief system, but endlessly and proudly skirt around any type of logic and couldn't care less how completely absurd and unfalsifiable their statements are. The new left has created a religion for itself. And the real irony is, they don't even notice.
My take away from those experiences is if you aren't willing to subject your views to any scrutiny, they aren't worth my time to entertain in the first place.

I’m just trying to understand the whole situation, because it seems like an interesting topic to discuss. I definitely know that there are hardcore religious zealots, but I would imagine that (much like the political landscape) most people are very moderate in their willingness to discuss religious views. It would be a difficult topic to debate because religion is based on faith, which by definition means that people (for the most part) can only backup their arguments with things they believe through faith. No one can prove or disprove the existence of God. Again, I’m just curious as to the “why” in regards to debating religion.

@@alikhat1647 I grew up as an atheist. Was at a ripe age for the "New Atheist" movement. I had some problems with some of the things religion was doing. I never sought out religious people in some "debate me, bro" fashion though. I was and always have been a curious person. I like to inquire, and consider things as deeply as I can. To figure out why people think what they think, or believe what they believe. I'm like the kid who asks "why" repeatedly because I seek to understand. Not fundamentally "win", or anything like that. I guess you could say I'm more Socratic by nature.
I've had ups and downs in my own personal view of religions. I can see their positives and negatives. Ultimately, I just enjoy thinking about complicated stuff. I enjoy logic, reasoning, exchanging ideas, seeing what makes someone tick. Back when I was debating a lot with religious people, at was only those who voluntarily came to atheist pages online. I never went to religious ones. I'd have discussions with religious solicitors knocking on my door, or protesting, or handing out their material. I figured if they're going to advertise their belief system in such a way, they must be willing and ready to discuss why they have such beliefs. Kind of like trying to sell a product. If you expect someone to spend their hard earned money on your product, you can't reasonably expect them to just have no level of skepticism. Convince me to buy it.
Most religious people are just chillin, living out their lives, and I might have a more relaxed conversation with someone like that about religion, if at all. The average joe type guy or lady who goes to church or something, and thats that.
I always did my best to try to remain civil and respectful. I wasn't interested in trolling or being a malicious hypocrite. I just wanted to sharpen my thinking and reasoning. I learned a lot of useful things from all that interaction. Its also trained me to spot good and bad reasoning. The hallmarks of faith systems, fallacies, and the biggest take away being that if you aren't willing to try to explain/defend your position, it doesn't deserve my consideration to begin with. Specifically in regard to protesters or solicitors. Which is why the woke type who hold up their signs, but then say stuff like "it isn't my job to educate you", just masks me want to laugh in response and say "then I couldn't care less what your views are, or what your signs say. These people aren't serious about changing the world in a positive way. They're just doing what they're told without thinking. Their beliefs are paper thin. Although its structured very similarly to a religion, I've met many religious people with pretty good and well thought out reasons to believe what they do. So at least I can have some sort of reapect for them in that sense. In the majority of cases though, it has repeatedly boiled down to faith. A fear of death is a big motivator too. A lot of religious people seem to have a very difficult time finding a source of morality outside of a religious foundation, and are terrified at the idea of ceasing to exist.
Anyway, that was a long comment. Sorry about that.
I really appreciate how you are able to react to this and other things that show how far our society has fallen. And the way you look at both sides of the issue and come to conclusions based on the facts rather than long standing biases that may have been true at some point but almost certainly are no longer applicable.
