We found our first female flowers emerging on March 21st and now the catkins are shedding pollen and lots of flowers are visible, even during the rain and snow.
Hello, a little late but the answer is no, typically there is no need to hand pollinate. However, if you were doing some selective breeding then absolutely you would want to hand pollinate with some known pollen source so that you could ensure you get the crosses you are looking for.

Which variety
These are open pollinated seedlings so no variety, not yet.....always looking for bigger and better plants.
