  • www.Biutiful-TheMovie.com Biutiful, starring Javier Bardem and directed by Alejandro Gonsalez Inarritu is a love story between a father and his children. This is the journey of Uxbal, a conflicted man who struggles to reconcile fatherhood, love, spirituality, crime, guilt and mortality amidst the dangerous underworld of modern Barcelona. His livelihood is earned out of bounds, his sacrifices for his children know no bounds. Like life itself, Biutiful is a circular tale that ends where it begins. As fate encircles him and thresholds are crossed, a dim, redemptive road brightens, illuminating the inheritances bestowed from father to child, and the paternal guiding hand that navigates life's corridors, whether bright, bad -- or Biutiful. Official U.S. movie trailer. Opens in selected theaters December 29th.

One of the very, VERY few trailers I've seen where the film actually lives up to, indeed, surpasses the expectations of the trailer.
This, as all seasoned film goers know, is seldom the case. My wife and I in the 44 years we've been together, can't count the times we've turned our heads in the middle of the trailer and whisper "They've just shown us the very best bits in that film" or, and this is so perplexing "They've just shown us the beginning, middle, end in quick snippets and we whisper "We've SEEN this now" and return to our popcorn.
BIUTIFUL is a film, an utterly incredible cinematic experience. If you have warm blood, it will change you. Before I get to Javier's performance I must mention the children, especially Hannah Bouchaib. As the protagonist Uxbal's (Bardem) daughter Ana, Bouchaib, in a scene near the end of the film, displays a depth of emotion and absolutely breaks our hearts, forever.
Curiously, she has practically gone underground since this 2010 performance.
Javier Bardem. BIUTIFUL is a film, and Uxbal is a role, that I cannot imagine any other actor pulling off. Especially, the way Javier's face is etched with true pain, heartbreak and suffering...when Uxbal smiles, it catches us by surprise and is also heartbreaking.
The writing is perfect. Direction as well. The only warning I would give is: You must be ready to experience this film. You don't just watch it. It TAKES you on Uxbal's journey, and you will be forever marked by it.

For some it may be about a guy who still has beautiful soul despite all the horrors around him. For some it may be Barcelona beautiful on the oustide for tourists but may be horrible for people actually living there especially if they are not Catalan. Watch it yourself and decide what's Biutiful in it and what's ugly.

I get the sentimental objective, I get it, I really do. The film was beautifully shot, and the acting was top shelf. However, this was an absolute snooze fest. I kept waiting for a gun to pop off, or some close combat action, or some kind of twist. I had to tell my father to go to bed halfway through the film. His snoring was interrupting my comprehension of the english subtitles. Nothing EVER develops, do yourself a favor and spend your 2.5 hours doing something else less humdrum.
