Another great one John! Looks like you are having fun. Heading for life as an expat Sept., 27. DaNang bound. Must say I'm kinda freaking out a bit. I think it's the initial stuff like setting up your phone etc., but I think I'll hotel it for a week or so and have the hotel pick me up. I'm not the most tech savvy lol.
Thanks so much!!! There’s lots of friendly people that are more than willing to help you out with the little things. Take your phone to Viettel and they will do everything for you!
Everybody has been learn English in school . But they don't have chance communication with foreign so they don't understand when you say to fast. If you right down they will understand
Very good information about the basics! I've been to Saigon several times since 2014. Good tip about the Dong notes. I once tipped a taxi driver 100.000 instead of 10.000 LOL. He protested but I won (or lost?) :-)
Thanks very much! To this day I always double check before I hand bills over because it’s so easy to make a mistake. I’ve had locals almost had me back a 500,000 instead of a 20,000!
If you want to exchange currency less than $100USD, you can do it with the banks. If you want to exchange more than $100USD, you should do it at the two most popular locations behind Ben Thanh market. They have better exchange rates based on the conditions of your currency bills (old vs new bills). I forget the names of the place, but you can ask the local for the places.
Thanks very much!!! I’m working on more videos as I write this. Also you can listen to my podcast if you’re interested on finding out more about Vietnam and Southeast Asia. itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/far-east-travels-podcast/id1079513943?mt=2
Thanks for sharing your video. Excellent quality video. I found the note about not crossing in front of oncoming buses very useful. Another tip is to only bring U.S. dollars in mint condition for exchange at the money changers. Stick to 20s and 100s that are as new as possible with no tears or writing or other imperfections.
Thanks very much! Thanks for sharing your tip on U.S. currency! I usually only carry enough to pay the stamping fee for my visa but I always make sure the bills are clean and in good shape. They may not be as picky as other countries but it’s quite possible bills will get rejected if they have a tear. You’re right, better to be safe and carry clean bills that are in good shape.
My next top 5 things: 1. Walk 2. Drink 3. Eat 4. Walk 5. Eat & Drink again, then head to Vung Tau in 2 hours by AC speedy boat ($15 USD), or to Nha Trang Beach in 1 hour AC airplane ($75 USD only) for wave and sunshine. Cheers and Don't need to bring bullet proof vest, ok.
Thanks for sharing, my sister in-law has a place in Saigon, my wife’s brother in in the concrete business he has ships of supplies coming in, Vietnam is such a beautiful place back in the villages etc
Saigon is always a beautiful city and the place has changed since the war. I was there in 1969 and left in 1970. I was in Cau Binh Loi Gia Dinh. That was about 9 miles from Saigon Hope you have a great time in Vietnam.
I was in Vietnam in 2020, and crossin street in Saigon is really funny! But at the end of our month trip we were professionals for crossing the street full of mopeds! Hope to visit agine, one of my best trips so far!
Great video. How’s the humidity this time of year? I’ve only been through in October. Two side notes about money exchange. If your flight out of HCM is early AM there is no money exchanger open until 7am as of last time I was there in early 2018. Also a great place to exchange money in the city is at the jeweler and pawn shops. They always gave me the standard rate and no waiting in line at a bank.
Great advice! Thanks for sharing and thank you! The days can get humid but maybe even more so during the rainy season in the summer. Very dry and hot until June.
Lol, Homey don’t play that! I learned in the broadcast business to always talk to your audience as if you are talking to one person, which 99% of the time you are! Thanks for noticing, much appreciated!!!
Thanks for this video good experience for us to know .. I'm thinking to travel for this city in August but I'm not sure from the weather how will be ! So do you recommend me to visit this city in August ? First time for me that's why I'm asking .. Thank you again for this video
It’s fine to visit in August if you don’t mind the rain. It rains almost every day but sometimes only for 1-2 hours. Some days it will rain a few times, but for short durations, and very intense.
Thanks very much! You’d recognize some things but far more crowded with people and motorbikes/vehicles and steel framed towers which didn’t exist then.
Before you go arrange your visa on line. Hotels I stayed at picked me up at the airport. And I’m not rich. They were decent 3 star little tourist hotels
you prolly dont give a damn but does anybody know a trick to log back into an Instagram account?? I somehow lost the password. I would love any help you can give me!

The overseas Vietnamese who left the country after the VN war in 1975 and their children would prefer to call the city as Saigon for short and we relate more to that name.
@@iamjohnsaboe Of the 64 provinces of Vietnam and the Many Cities none is named with someones name, so why is Saigon called Ho Chi Minh . . I believe it will change back to Saigon.

Never get in a taxi with tinted windows. Mai Linh or Vin a San. (Sp)? Never had a problem with them. Avoid the cyclo guys. They will try to rip you off. Be as aggressive with them as they are with you.
Very good advice especially dealing with Cyclo drivers. Sometimes they work with other drivers to pressure you to pay up, sometimes $50USD for a short ride.
nhan Agnew ok, it’s possible but it’s easier to get a taxi for sure! I only recommend that bus if you’re traveling light and it’s not too far to walk from the bus stop to your hotel.
Another question that just popped up...is it wise maybe to bring Revolut or Transferwise cards to Vietnam..or just plain cash?? I myself prefer not to walk arround with too much cash. TIA, best regards..!!
I think it’s wise to bring atm cards with you. I’m not familiar with how widely accepted those cards are in Vietnam but you can find Citibank, and HSBC in most major cities that take almost any international card.
Good stuff! I'm pissed that I had to cut my trip there short because of Corona in mid-March. Going back once travel is back to some semblance of normal.
Thanks! Sorry to hear you had to cut your trip short! Just met a guy from Florida that’s been stuck here since March wanting to get home. Crazy times we live in but we’ll get through it!
One more tip and it is a safety one... When taking picture with your phone or camera on the sidewalk, watch out for incoming motorbike. They may try to snap the camera or phone right from your hand.
I have to hand it to you John. You have laid out good & informative details. I have been to Saigon many times over the years with an absence last year (2020) due to Covid-19. I have to agree with all that you have said & shared. True to the points!!
Oh ok thanks so very much and flattered. . so you live in Vietnam ? are you going to tell something about visa rurles ? for short stay ? longer stay ? retire there ?? I think many are interested to move away from over priced Thailand. . . .
Viettel is the best for travel throughout Vietnam as it has the best coverage in rural areas as well as all of the cities. Only buy it from one of their branded stores. Do not buy from markets or 3rd party sellers or at the airport.
Hi John, I am so happy and glad that you are responding to your viewers. Lots of vloggers that I have encountered on UA-cam wants you to subscribe and make comments but they never make time to response to their viewers. Anyway, I was in Vietnam 3 or 4 years ago, and I wished I knew about the travel/food vloggers on UA-cam. I was staying in District 1 but I didn't see any public transportation along that street. I have to walk all over the place and this tired me out when I finally reached my place of destination. Also, because of my inability to speak Vietnamese, though I am always mistaken as one, I hated being scammed or overpriced whenever I go to the market, sidewalk vendors. Also, staying there at a guesthouse or hotel, the people working there can't recommend a good place to eat except the places around where they live. They are ill equipped of infos necessary to a tourist or a guest. So thank God for people like you. Thank you again John.
Thank you so much for your very kind and thoughtful words! I hope that one day you can return to Vietnam and have a completely different and enjoyable experience. It truly is an exciting and interesting place to visit and with a little knowledge you can avoid some of it’s pitfalls in the future!🙏🙏🙏
Thailand vs. Vietnam which is best. cheapest. friendliest people ? I think Thauland has been sinking a lot the last years -westerners are treated like we are not wellcomed anymore.. Vietnam wil be a hard competitor to Thailand I think and their hotels are nice to and quite cheaper...
Thailand is getting more expensive due to government policies. Tighter restrictions on visas as well. Thailand has nicer beaches and probably better service standards overall than Vietnam. Vietnam has lots of room to grow and they are much friendlier and liberal on visas. Vietnam seems to be overall open for business and open to foreigners whereas Thailand appears to be clamping down. The people are very friendly in Vietnam. I wouldn’t say one is better than the other, they both have their strengths. Depends on what you’re interested in or looking for but definitely of the two Vietnam is more of a bargain. Your money definitely goes further.

If you're staying less than a year, just get international travel insurance. If staying longer, it's usually a good idea to go for private-hospital based insurance that covers a particular hospital like FV Hospital (French Vietnamese), Vinmec (Vin Group)..some of them have more than 1 branch. I normally stay in Vietnam about 3 months twice a year so I just use my Australian issued Platinum Visa card to purchase airfare and international travel insurance is included free.
@@tonyvu2011 Thanks Tony ! The private hospital insurance...do you get that directly from that hospital ? I’ll be 62 and my wife 57. We are in good health but we are too young to be on medicare here in the US. I really appreciate the information.
@@bananapatch9118 For a big group like Vinmec, you can buy directly from them. For others you buy from an insurer for that particular hospital and you can change hospital when you move to different area. International cover like Bupa is not bad, just a little more expensive but it covers your travel outside Vietnam too.
You could potentially make them feel awkward or worse, offend them. It would be like tipping a restaurant owner, and they’re not necessarily the poorest. It’s better to compliment them on the taste of their food if you’re enjoying it. Coming back to them on another day will also make them happy. Even some people that work in restaurants sometimes refuse tips.

Thanks Tony !
Very good.Thanks.
My pleasure!
How was Vietnamese ca phe ?
Good and very strong!!!
Nice to see you back, John!
Thanks man! Great to be back!!!
Do you plan to come back ?
Saigon is my Base now!
How do you stay over there for long period? What visa should I get for like a 90 day stay. . THNX John
Wow.. don't tip the food carts?? Wouldn't they be the most appreciated? The poorest.
Thank you ....great and good details
