I have never found "cartoon character explodes with blood and gore" type humor funny EXCEPT for this mod. I don't know why, I just think Mario being thrown a long distance and exploding into a blood puddle is comedy gold.
I think its in its snappiness and juxtaposition. Snappiness: Often the death happens in the blink of an eye to a sign or the most random thing. One frame ago, Mario wasn't a puddle with the hat left behind. Juxtaposition: This is super mario 64, you expect cartoony, but not violent spray of blood. Snappiness again: He forgot that signs do that.
If it isn't apparent or exploited in the video, the baby penguin yelps ten times before Mario auto-kicks him. If he's put down on the eighth or ninth yelp, it should be fine. You just need to be in a spot where he won't wander off a cliff.
Imagine you played this in multiplayer, ran around bob omb battlefield then saw a text box reading "I'm a chuckster!" next thing you know you see a mario getting flung off the mountain and exploding into blood
My favorite part of this is how many things are like actual personalized copy stories despite the gore lol. A harder king bobomb, an evil area with Dorrie, literally kicking the penguins is one that personally resonates with me.

It makes a fart sound when he gets close to a one-up mushroom. Mushrooms that are already visible (unlike the ones in boxes) despawn when he gets close, just like trees do. And when they despawn, they make a fart noise.
I would really like to know what Miyamoto was thinking when he said “I want Mario’s drowning death animation to look horrifyingly painful. I want him to struggle and wriggle about while trying to gasp for air as his lungs gurgle with fluid.”
