as a guitar player and vocalist myself, i personally have a hard time singing and playing at the same time especially if the guitar work is tough itself. some of the riffs he plays and vocal patterns he uses are def a hard combination to pull off. And i have seen them live and it's fucking amazing
I'm one of the biggest Mastodon fans ever, but Brent disappoints me with his live vocals. Sounds likes he's hardly pronouncing the words, just murmuring the general pitch from the studio version.
awesome vid - awesome quality !!! thanks ! it's just hard to sing and play at the same time !!! Not everyone can do it as good as Laiho .. or Tuck ... or smone else)) Listen to his voice on records - it's amazing !) Brent is one of the guitar gods !!!
I've seen Mastodon live. It was the best concert i've been to. that being said, Brent sucks at singing live. but that's because 1. he doesn't like singing (he said so in an interview) and 2. He likes to focus more on his guitar playing than the lyrics and how good his voice sounds. if you say Brent is "actually phenomenal live" then you better be referring to his guitar playing, because his vocal work is HORRIBLE live. but i think the instrumentation is much more important than the vocals.
He’s gotten way way better singing live, just saw them last week and he was rock solid, Brann and Troy crushed the live vocals too. Band sounded truly phenomenal.
@alek98 You're totally right. When they played Letterman last Wednesday, he looked like he was having a killer time singing Curl of the Burl. I don't know what to think.
@Bennett1777 or even better Neil Fallon. but Mastodon's bizarre vocals are an important part of their alchemy, I like them how they are quite frankly, it's one of the many whings that make them sound so unique.
@AntonDoesMusic That's odd...in the Crack the Skye documentary/behind the scenes footage Brent actually said he wanted to sit back and actually sing and play guitar solos for a change. Also, if he really doesn't like to sing, why is his voice so prominent on The Hunter? I will agree, though, his guitar playing is amazing and that's his redeeming factor. Shitty vocals aside, Brent's a great performer.
It wasn't Shavo who punched him, it was a rapper named Reverend William Burke (Wu-Tang affiliate) that did it. Shavo was their when it happened because he was in a group with William Burke called Ichozen along with RZA and Kinetic-9 (Killarmy).
@AntonDoesMusic The only thing i don't get is that if he sucks (which we all know, and i'm almost sure he knows it too) at singing live, why does he insist on doing vocals in several songs on each album, specially after what you said about he saying he doesn't like singing. I just don't get why he would do it, he's obviously not getting forced to sing on the albums.
Aww damn it I wish they had more powerful voices, because they sound so good on the albums, but live it just sounds crappy. The musicianship is fine live, but the vocals are always terrible to mediocre at best.
I can see why you think it sounds bad but listen closer, he doesn't sound too different to how he does on the album. The problem is that live he can't fully focus on his vocals because he also has some incredibly difficult guitar parts to focus on. So his delivery is not 100 % spot on. If you really think his vocals are SO BAD here that they ruin the song then I think YOU are the tone deaf one.
Fans don't like to hear that but it is true. I'm huge fan of their studio albums, but their live vocals are pretty much torture for me to listen to. I'm sure when you're there it is so loud that you don't care, but I'm not going to buy a live Mastodon DVD or something for entertainment.
Honestly I love mastodon, but brent can be an awful singer. it sounds like he either cant hear himself (he refuses to wear in ear monitors) or he is just drunk/stoned. Maybe both... but I have heard him sing well before...
My favorite song from MASTODON, but I was not aware the lyrics were « weaweawoweneweawewowayyyyy »
nanananana nananan ami in your way nananana nana dear mister nanana naa saved nanana it's been claimed na na na NA NA NA NA ROOOTS NAN NA
lol
That's what got me into Mastodon. That ending right there.
Makes two of us
It is the first song I have heard of them...
Is it not the most badass outro of all time!?
BA DUM da da da da da da BA DUM DA DA DUM da da da da da da BA DUM DA DA BUM da da da da da da BA DUM DA DA DUM

3.14 that outro riff man., fkn perfection right there.
Sounds like some vintage bill riffage, dude is a riff master.
That outro gets me.
Every. Single. Time.
Bill has the greatest growl in the band hands down!
Bill?
@@samspade8830 yeah. Bill has some nasty low growls.
@@TheGuitarifier Didn't know he did vocals until this video
I think his back-up growls are okay-ish, but vocal duties on this song were shared between Brent and Troy.
that finish was kick ass!
+Jason Murillo Old Mastodon was heavy as fuck. Especially Remission.
That coda is simply UNREAL
David Cárdenas Matzner its epic eh, I love it
Love this song..
My favourite song. So f**king raw, melodic and cool. Epic love & epic hate combined
From all the videos I've seen, I never thought that Brents vocals were off, but I do think they should turn up his mic as well as Branns.
I for one have no issue with the band's live vocals. This band is amazing!
nanananana nanananana nananananaa (8)
though still the best band of the last 10 years
This comment is still valid 10 years later.
Love these guys but Brent usually sounds drunk 😋
Brann has the best vocals in this band
I think Troy is still my fav
@@patrickolivier1 agreed. Troy is far more versatile.
@chicomendes2 exactly. when you are actually at the show, the vocals sound pretty much ALL awesome
At the end they headbang like each of them was playing a different fckin' song, lol.
One of my favorite bands love mastodon phenomenal &fucking Brilliant 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘💀☠️🖤✝
Beautiful Gibson guitars they’re using!

i love this live version exactly by vocals.

Excellent video and audio. Which camera did you use?
@alek98 You're totally right. When they played Letterman last Wednesday, he looked like he was having a killer time singing Curl of the Burl. I don't know what to think.
JFC! I fucking love that song!
@TOOLxoxo that being said, they are easily the best band out there right now.
Mayhem fest is going to be awesome
@AntonDoesMusic when ur there it sounds great,
Loving the Randy Rhoads kit. I like Brann that much more now

@JM1988 Indeed they are the best!
Why does Brent sing in so many songs if he hates it? I do agree though his voice isn't very good live but they still kick ass live
So loud noise background, i cant understand anything
Don't forget that Brent suffered an accident that damaged his brain
He did?
Supern00b25 When was this?

I'm a huge mastodon fan and I agree 100%. their live vocals are always a disappointment

Holy shit, even I sing better than that. I love Mastodon, both times I've seen them live, they stunk. Maybe they should just let Troy sing.
I think I'll stick with the album version.
I have been to a Mastodon show. The experience was amazing, Brent's voice was not
