Dust Collection Cart with Cyclone Separator
In this video I show you how I built this dust collection cart complete with cyclone separator. I go step by step though the process of building it as well why I chose this design.
#oneida#cyclone#dustcollection#woodworking#cleanup#diy
For anyone wondering about the various connectors. The PVC is 2" thick, so are the 90 degree elbows. Two black 90 degree connectors come with the dust deputy. The remaining two rubber connectors are Fernco P1056-22 (2 inch x 2 inch), available widely in HD & Lowes for roughly $5 each.
This is definitely my favorite dust collector cart design I've seen (and I think I've watched almost all of them). I'm gonna support by picking up the plans and giving it a go making one of these.
Thanks so much Brian! 🙌
Agreed!
Just so incredibly awesome … thanks for sharing … 🙏🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Simple and practical. All you need it to be. Just retired so building ithis in the week I think. Slightly different pipe array but end result will be (hopefully) the same. Thanks for idea.
Awesome. Need something portable . Already have the dust deputy.
Like the Festool Track Saw, I'm looking at getting a cordless one. Already have the Kreg Adaptive Cutting System and bult my own base for it.
Matt, you ALWAYS think things through, answer a lot of questions I didn’t know I had and then finish a great project. Terrific! THANKS
Bought the plans and built this, very satisfied, this is a great design for a small shop.
Great design! purchased your plan and will build in the next few weeks! Great site and videos with many practical and well-conceived/designed project plans. Thanks!
The only thing I have done differently was I added a 20-gallon garbage pail because the 5-gallon pail really fills quickly form the planer. I really like your use of the PVC piping. Great build
Yeah mine is only used for light duty sanding and cleaning the shop. The 5 gal bucket is good for me
This is sweet. My set up was a real pain in the ass and ended up unused and always a plugged filter on the vac. Thank you. I’ll be making one of these as my next shop project for sure
Yeah this setup is great. It's compact enough that its not in the way.
I like it!!! I need a "Small Setup" for my 10x10' Storage Shed/Shop.👍
What a great idea 💡 I’m going to do the same it’s been bugging me too for years ! Nice and simple design!! Thank you
You're welcome. It's a pretty easy upgrade for sure and works great!
Great idea of having the cart on casters
This solves my problem by alternating the cart between two rows of machines on opposed walls
Some how never came to think of it
So french cleat gone caster wheels rolled in
Awesome! One of the simplest and most effective design I've seen. Maybe I'll finally build this...I to have been wanting to do this for a while. Thanks for sharing!
I like it. I had another plan in mind for a very long time - tomorrow is the day! (OK - maybe a two day project. I may need groceries. . . ) Easier and more compact than the other plan I had intended to make. In particular since I have the Home Depot version of the cyclone. I guess I'm not wed to the birch plywood. It the stuff holds the tools, I want my end products to be beautiful - the shop tools don't have to be beautiful. I have base and top pieces. I saw one piece at Ace that will suffice for sides. Uh yeah - more PVC also on the shopping list. And the rubber connectors, as well as clamps. I don't have this stuff laying around. . . . After this - a mini-log sled to cut up my raw wood. . . . .
Will do, at this time cannot install dust collection system due to inadequate power, need to do cleanup afterwards. I have a Rigid and the Deputy, this plan will make lugging it around much easier and then the hoses won't pop out of their fittings.
Nice, i wanted to make something like this but was terrified of screwing up cutting the huge hole to fit the bucket.
Just bought the plans. I have the Rigid 4 gallon 5 hp vacuum which is smaller but cart will still work, may need to secure the vacuum down to not move around. Have the Dust Deputy. Thank you.
Check out my latest video. I just made a new cart that works for smaller shop vacs like yours
Who the hell can watch this and hit the THUMBS DOWN button? Thanks for a clear, crisp instructional video.
Just ordered the plans and I can’t wait to build one. Thank you for the awesome info and video.
Just did my version with your inspiration out of exterior sheathing. Not as pretty but just as functional, it takes a bit of persuasion since it's not as stable but with a few clamps you can get there. Thanks
I build my Oneida Dust Deputy vertical and my chief complaint is no place to store the hose. Now I am looking for another option, but so many out there do not address the need to somehow store the hose. What I do like about yours is the use of the PVC connecting the vac and the Dust Deputy. This is also a much more stable version. I will need to come up with a way to modify this to store the hose.
Just built this, such a brilliant idea. Oh, I didn’t realise there was a link to the plans till after i built it. Just paid the $5 though 😎 Thanks again 👍🏼
I love this! Thank you! I must have watched 100 videos on setting up one of these dust deputy cyclones and this is the one that solved my problem of hose connections. I love the PBC with rubber couplers, so f'in obvious I don't know how I missed it. Love the cart too. I was going to build the typical side by side from the plan in the woodworker mag that everyone uses, but I love this one and like you, I want the smaller footprint. You earned a sub...thanks!
Great video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. This looks like what I need with the small footprint. Thanks again,
Very nice and simple design.
Good job. I hope it works well for you for a long time .
Thank you Sean!
You did a very nice job with this project! Your design is exceptional.
Great video. Probably the best most well-reasoned explanation I've seen. And timely. My Dust Deputy arrives today.
Nice Job! One question. What is your process for emptying the dust collection bucket? From the video it looks like it’s pretty solidly connected with the pvc.
This is a potential problem. My build made for easy bucket emptying, but my pvc fittings would wiggle loose here and there.
My biggest issue was assuming it was catch all dust and my filter would never need to be cleaned.
Dont get me wrong, it works, well, but my filter still needed occasional cleaning.
Since my build didnt take this into consideration, disassembling was a mess and when moving my whole cart fell apart. Time for version 2.0.
This will include thumb screw hose clamps for hoses, a T-fitting trap going into the shop vac, easy filter cleaning access, and easy bucket emptying. Ideally a screw top for the bucket
couldn't one replace the screws on the rubber pipe connection thingies with thumbscrews? that way one could remove the cyclone and the bucket for emptying (if the PVC pipe construction has enough play that is).
The other more elegant approach would be to replace the palstive bucket with one of them steel ones that have a ring with a lever to secure the bucket to the lid. Then simply construct the whole thing such that the bucket ist standing on a board of say 3 cm. To empty the bucket you simply remove the board, push the lever and remove the bucket.
Hi, I think the trick is to find PVC fittings that are a snug fit... to date they haven’t worked loose. I just detach the bungie cords and ease the bucket off. I didn't find I had to use rubber joining pieces or hose clamps. I also haven't found the need to seal or secure the lid onto the bucket; assuming the lid has a reasonable grasp of the bucket rim, the vacuum inside the bucket will hold it on tight. That's been my experience with it anyway 😎
Great design! Nice work!
Thanks for the design. This is exactly what I would like to make. Best design that I have seen yet.
Great looking project that I have been looking for to make my Fein shopvac easier to manage in the shop.
This will work for you. Just have to adjust the dimensions to fit the vac you have👍
Parabéns..., excelente projeto, ficou muito prático e funcional, não ocupa espaço e facilita o deslocamento.
Abraço aqui do Brasil 🇧🇷
Matt, another great video!
Thanks Jason!
Thank you
great video I like the delivery of the build.
Looks great but how easy is it to dump the bucket? Looks like it won't just slide out...
Looks great Matt!
Hey thanks Josh!
I think this might be the one for my workshop!
Just bought your plans. You definitely deserve more support!
Awesome. Going to build a version on this.
That I am going to build for sure. Thanks
Ordered your plans today. Great build!
Looks great. Curious if the pipe is a pain when emptying the bucket. Just lean against a wall?
The rubber connector has some flex. You can get the lid off and just let the lid hang while you empty it 👍
Good design, my problem still is the hose holder, I have double the length of the hose that came with the shop vac, and still look for a design of a cart and a hose holder, something that holds both the shop vac and the hose and can easily be rolled around the shop.
Good solution. Thank you.
Looks great! Super clean design!
that's what I was going for. Nothing fancy, it just works well.
Nice! I wish you had shown more details on connecting the hose to the cyclone, where you got it, how it connects, the brand name of the cyclone.
It's the Oneida dust deputy deluxe. It comes with all the connections.
I have to ask, where did you find that red cart with the Armor logo on it?? I’ve seen them in a couple videos from other UA-camrs as well, but can’t seem to find them anywhere. Thanks!

one of the best ever seen
I like this design a lot, but I would be concerned about the extra steps to empty the bucket with pvc vs a flexible hose. Nice video!
There are no extra steps. There's flex in the rubber connectors that allow you to pull the lid right off without disconnecting anything.
Like the simple design.
Thanks for sharing, that’s an awesome video!
I need to make one but I haven’t made up my mind what size & brand of portable vacuum to purchase.... lol
I really like your design, especially the clean lines of the PVC pipe rather than vacuum hose. Nice job. One question, do you find it troublesome to move the pipe to empty the bucket with the "hard pipe" set up. This question has been my major hold up on a similar project.
Nope. The rubber pipe connector has enough flex in it thst taking the lid off is super easy
Hey man, keep the UA-cam content coming! You’re a natural!
Thanks brother! I appreciate the encouragement.
Nice clean design
👍 maybe i will try 🤔😎
How you done cyclone?
Amazing design! I finally got around to making one for myself. What do you do about the static from the PVC pipes? Did you ground it somehow?
nice video nice job
Solid Matt! I’m hopefully going to get around to one of these one day
It's a great addition to the shop. I'm happy with how it keeps things clean inside the shop vac.
Hi i just found your channel. I am REALLY new to all this and I don't understand why you need the cyclone. Can't you just attach the shop vac hose to your saws? Thanks
It keeps your vacuum filter clean and running efficiently. Also easier to empty the dust bucket than clean out your vacuum.
Great video and a cart design I have been looking for. Couple of questions, where did you get the yellow magnetic stop you used on your bandsaw? Second is what is the space between the top of the Vacuum and the bottom of the top shelf/
I like it I’ve been looking at a lot of these lately how hard is it to empty with the pvc connected pipe?
Ron Cifu I don’t see that he has responded yet so I’ll give you my $.02 worth. Mine is very similar and because of the rubber connection points, the pvc can flex out of the was enough to remove the lid and pull the bucket pretty easily.
@@shannonvaughan4385 what size PVC and connectors did you use?
Liked the build, but had one question. With the rigid PVC pipe, is it difficult to remove the lid from from the 5-gallon bucket?
Nope. The lid pops right off and the pipe easily disconnects from the shop vac below
Pvc looks way cleaner but wouldn't it make cleaning up the cyclone collectors harder?
Nice work!
Great video,. This has given me some ideas on how to achieve what I am planning for a similar cart but a different design. Thanks fir the vid.
Great video! I like the design and bungies used for securing the cyclone😎👌
Great work! I am thinking of cutting a hole on the top piece to drop in the dust deputy bucket. I am not sure is that a good idea and I would like to hear about your opinion. Thank you very much!
Looks a bit hard to empty bucket without unscrewing the PVC pipe first - maybe a flex hose fixes that issue?
Well thought out, great design, excellent craftsmanship and I love Baltic Birch myself lol. My cart will be alot like this one. Glad they came out with the Dustopper before I bought a cyclone :-) - that'll cut down the height considerably. Nice project Matt!
Great video. Very good design.
Wondering how tall your shop vac is? Want to make mine as tight as possible without making removal of the vacuum difficult. My vacuum is about 25” high. Your plans call for a taller cart. Wondering if your vac is about as tall as mine and you needed the additional room for easy placement/removal?
I'd say let's add an automatic tool outlet, but I know you use your festool vac for that.
Great video and cool design! I would like to try this myself for my Rigid vac. I can't figure one thing out though: is the hose fitting at the front of your vac 2.5" (as is my Rigid vac)? If so, how did you connect the narrower 2" diameter PVC pipe to the elbow? There is a flexible 2"x2" coupling there in your design but does it accommodate the 2.5" PVC elbow?
How do you remove the 5 gallon bucket when you need to empty it? Do you have to loosen the hose clamps to take off the PVC? Or is there enough wiggle in the pipe itself to disconnect one of the elbows?
There's enough wiggle
How does it handle static build up?
this is so cool
Nice video. You find this thing top heavy or tippy at all with pulling hose from the top half? Was going to build a vertical setup like this but afraid every time I pull it around it just tips. One guy put concrete in the base but not sure I want to go to that extreme.
No it doesn't tip at all with the vac in the bottom. If you pull on the hose too hard it will just slip off the cyclone anyway.
What size are the pvc pipes and connectors?
Where did u get those corner clamps? They look great!!
They are made by Woodpeckers.
Great idea, I have been needing something like this for a while now. Does everything I need come with the link for the Oneida Dust Deputy Deluxe?
making this soon!
Awesome!
This is really nicely done! What diameter PVC did you use?
It's 2 Inch pvc
is this the HD1400 shop vac?
Same question as Paul…
Great video Matt, I need to do this! Also the audio was so good, what mic set up are you using?
I use a Blue Snowball mic for my voiceovers
Awesome!
If using baltic birch plywood, can you make the cart with 1/2 inch instead of 3/4?
I would not. You really should use 3/4 for this kind of thing
@@MWAWoodworks Thanks for clarifying.
What size is the PVC
Where did you get the black 90 degree elbow, the one attached to the vac?
Comes with the dust deputy
Studying dust collection, most people will tell you that a 90 degree angle will kill your suction. If this were my setup I'd look at replacing that PVC with an actual hose.
everyone seems to use cylindrical buckets for the dust collectors... can a square bucket (kitty litter) be used?
The shape of the dust bin should not matter. I just think buckets are the most common and accessible solution
What brand of hose did you use (that orange colored one)? And where did you but them from. Need to change from the stock hoses.
That is the hose that came with my Ridgid vacuum
That's a lot of vacuum needed to pull up that tube, how has that been working?
It works quite well. The inside of the vaccum has remained pretty well spotless for a year with regular cleaning of the bucket.
👏👏👏
Where did you get those corner clamps?
Woodpecker tools
Who makes those corner clamps?
Woodpecker
How is it emptying the bucket?
Check out my demo in this dust collection video ua-cam.com/video/FEUnMJhOhdk/v-deo.html
I use the size 1 and 1/0 Mustad hooks to freeline for snook ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxzXmlErSqVAEGWFEKO530BvTqFDw53QW3 and they have been fantastic. The points are super sharp, and the hook is small enough to blend with my baitfish, yet large enough to land fish 30" or more. I also use these hooks when I'm pier or surf fishing with my kids. They tend to catch tons of smaller snapper, whiting, and catfish, and we get far fewer gut hooks with these Mustad in-lines, which means more of them survive after release. I was actually using these hooks when I caught my friend too, but I think that had more to do with the bait I was using ;-)
