  • 《Ep. 2》Kyoto, Japan | Tag along with Yoshikawa-san, a professional landscape gardener who has been in charge for creating some of the beautiful gardens found in MACHIYA INNS & HOTELS' machiya (traditional Japanese accommodations). He has created hundreds of different Japanese garden designs throughout Japan over the last 55 years.
We interviewed him in this video to ask about his thought process behind how he designs his Japanese gardens, and why he has chosen to continue this particular profession for most of his life.
Japanese gardens in traditional Japanese homes are notoriously small, but as you'll learn, even small Japanese gardens can have a large presence.
We hope you enjoy this little vlog from Japan, and stay tuned for the next episode of "Shokunin Diaries"!

He is highly skilled and passionate about his craft. This seems so mundane. I wonder how weeds are "controlled?' Goke moss? Arigato!

I would love to hire Yoshikawa-san for a little garden project at my home in Kyoto. Would there be a way for me to get in contact with him?
