As a GenX we were raised to worship the sun. Hours lying without protection, sometimes using just body oils to get that burnished copper look. It’s only these last few decades that we’ve learnt how harmful sunbathing can be.
Now I always follow a simple but effective routine when on holiday in the sun.
1: I apply sunscreens on my naked body and face at least 20 minutes before sun exposure. Making sure I get my WHOLE body covered including the backs of my ears, my hair parting and in between fingers and toes. Only getting dressed once fully dry.
2: Reapply every couple of hours making sure areas like my nose and my buttocks are thoroughly covered as the sunscreen easily rubs off due to sunglasses and sitting on towels. Reapply inside of swimsuit hems by at least an inch in case of swimsuit slippage exposing unprotected skin.
3: Drink lots of water throughout the day and a good drink before the end of day shower when you get home.
4: After a nice cold blast at the end of the shower, pat skin dry gently before applying aloe Vera, food grade vitamin E oil and aftersun that has been stored in the fridge all day.
5: Another long cold drink before chillaxing.
Following these rules I’ve managed to reduce the sun damage as much as possible and remain youthful looking for my near half century of age. Although I am still a little regretful of my childhood bad habits of long days of sun exposure sans protection. I wonder how much better still my skin would be…

Its not bad ! Look at farmers of the old days ..almost black.. In the sun from youth to 80's , live to the 90's , some 100.its all the junk in foods , drinks , air , etc .and should be common sense that you got to take baby steps.. After winter and first summer sun limit first week / few time to 15 min, week later , 30 min each time for few days , then a hour a few time / days and you good to go and can stay out in sun all day with no block or screen .helps to keep skin clean and moisturize daily

I come from a sunburn avoidance family. My mother was a nurse and treated too many bad sunburns in the 50’s. When clear sunscreens started to come out in the 70’s she was an immediate purchaser. She also taught me early that covering up was a great option! So many people I know are suffering from skin cancer now and it’s a real killer! Never had a burn that peeled until I was 17 and it was the very top of my shoulders! I’ve carried it through to my own family. We are still nice and tan looking but apply sunblock, long before we are outside and reapply very often. Loved your tips and am pleased to hear a Dr’s take on sunburn care. Same thing my mama did and always made myself and my family feel better even if people thought I was wrong to use cold wet towels, tons of moisturizer, gallons of drink and ibuprofen.

In 1996 my husband and I went to a Sarasota, Florida beach. I was chilling under a sun umbrella while he was floating on the waves for 2 1/2 Hours. He had fallen asleep on the float. By the time we got back to the motel he was very red, and starting to feel sick. We were young I didn't know what to do to help him. In hindsight we probably should have gone to the ER because of how sick and in pain. He was also very dehydrated because he passed out on the bed and I couldn't wake him for hours. I was only burned on the toe side of my feet and just a little on my shoulders. Something to remember about beaches is sometimes
the sand works like a mirror and reflects back to you.

Something else I don't think a lot of people realize is that Florida is much closer to the equator than northern states. I moved down here from Michigan, and I knew it got hot down here because I used to visit all the time when I was younger. But it didn't occur to me exactly how much stronger the sun would be here. A couple years ago, I didn't reapply sunscreen like I should have, and I got sunburned so badly that wearing clothes hurt. Certainly nothing close to what happened to your husband (I'm so glad he turned out to be alright!), but still really painful! I learned my lesson from that moment!
(But I have to say, falling asleep in the sun like that sounds like something I could do. When you get warmed all over like that, and the waves are just lulling you...yeah, that's the real siren's song. 😅😂

I broke out in herpes, I probably should have been in the hospital. I said never again. And now at 74, no one believes my age. So glad you beat the drum for sunscreen

I has an extreme sunburn 3 weeks ago. My face, neck, chest and both arms and hands. I used aloe after about 3 hours which helped a lot. I then bought Emuaid Maximum strength because it said its good for sunburn. I got instance relief from the pain and swelling. It also took down some of the redness. I applied 2x/day and recovered nicely. I still peeled, of course.... this was a very informative video. Thank you!

Years ago I had a derm tell me to keep some sunscreen with Zinc Oxide in my fridge, and to put it on if I ever got a sunburn. The fridge provides the cooling, and the zinc oxide has antioxidants and soothing properties for the burn. Luckily I haven't had to resort to using it, because I try to make sure I don't get burned to start with, but I still keep it in my fridge just in case. It actually seemed to feel better than the aloe products did, because some have alcohol in them to help it dry faster, but it also drys out your skin. So, sunscreen for the win!!

I always get sick in the summer especially right after lots of sun exposure. As someone who burns super easy (blonde and blue eyed), I totally think aloe is crucial! I like to take a shower in cooler warm water day one, then hotter the next day. I'll have an advil, and if I remember I take emmergen-C and astaxanthin (works better if taken before but oh well). The first couple days are critical to how many layers of skin I end up losing. If I can get hydrated and moisturized ASAP I might not peel, or very little.

The most effective treatment i've ever tried is "Hyperici oleum rubrum"(in my opinion it should not be made with olive oil, but jojoba or almond oil that can then be mixed with vaseline).
It is highly effective in helping healthy tissue regeneration and preventing or can even undo scarring especially in 3. degree burns it can make a diffrence between 15% healthy tissue and 85% healthy tissue after healing as a study showed.
It is very important though, that it is phototoxic, so under no circumstances the skin treated with it should get any sunlight/strong UV for at least a day.

Hydrocortisone helps to reduce inflammation and still reduce the itching that comes as result of the sun burn. Tomato (Lycopene)helps as well as aloe Vera.

When I was a kid and would get burned, I’d be given either Noxema cream or butter. 😮

Hi Doctorly, by any chance, can you recommend good sunscreen sprays with no white cast, and are they practical, like regular sunscreen?

What about Panthenol foam? The best thing for the sunburns (or any burns, really) EVER. Once my BF got really severe sunburns, we applied Panthenol foam immediately, and the next day he only had sunburns on the areas that we missed while applying the foam. Dunno, maybe you guys don't have it in the USA, but for those in Europe that's your #1 choice.

You said in video to wear at least SPF 30. Is it better to wear a higher SPF and if so what is the best?
