It is a shame that Chevy did not put more effort into improving the chevette during all the years of production..They made these things for 11 or 12 years in the US,and the last one built was as crummy as the first one built ! Aside from increasing engine displacement from 1.4 L to 1.6 L,there were no significant improvements throughout all those years. What a shame.
These cars were dangerously under-powered,the engines were too small and far too weak. I have always wondered why the standard engine was not the much-better Chevy 2.5L/151cu inch 'iron duke' engine. One of the hardest things to believe,(for all the driver comforts and conveniences being sacrificed by owning one of these gems),was the fact that these cars got crummy gas mileage, even with a stick-shift and driving easy it was a challenge to get 25 mpg on the highway!
I had a '78 Chevy Impala with a 305 engine,quadra-junk 4-barrel carb, auto transmission and I got almost the same mileage as my chevette on the highway! (I have never been able to figure that out..)
I am by no means a Ford fan,but it is worth mentioning that the Ford Escort was changed and improved every few years throughout it's longer production run,20+ years.
Chevy went through all the trouble of designing and building these cars all over the world, the first ones actually came out in South America in 1973. Then,it seems like they forgot all about them until production ended. GM really dropped the ball on this one.

The 'J' car was a much better offering than these 'T' cars. Improving them would've been redundant and unnecessary due to the advanced design and target market of the popular 'J'cars.

First, the 2.5 was not a Chevrolet engine, it was a Pontiac engine. Second, the 78 Impala w/305 had a Rochester 2GC carburetor, not a Quadrajet. The Quadrajet was only for the 350 engine.
The Chevette sold over 2MM copies and was acceptable to that market. It could have been better, but it was "good enough".
I would suggest that you first learn what you are talking about before coming here and spilling nonsense similar to Uncle Elmer and Cousin George.

Ralph Nader sumed this car up in two words -shit box 😂 he quoted that people didn't want little cars that got good gas mileage, they wanted Big cars that got good gas mileage!
