Thank you Commonwealth Games for pointing me in the direction of Julie Fowlis. I've visited North Uist but am ashamed to say I'd not heard of her. A beautiful voice singing in a beautiful language.
I have always had this love for the Gaelic language and culture "despite" being Swedish. It is an interest i guess. The Fowlis / Foulis (if i´m not misinformed) are a sept of the Munro clan, known as "The Invincibles" in Sweden in the 1700s (when they where often officers in the Swedish army). She is bewitching, talented, beautiful and just generally brings forth a warm love for what she is doing, a warmth i luckily have no defence against.
Need to teach the old language in schools more, give us a bit of pride in ourselves again! Always found Gaelic a fascinating language :) my family name in Gaelic is MacgilleEthain which means son of the servant of Saint John. Come from a very proud clan that can trace its roots all the way back to the dark ages and the Dalraidic migrations :)
The death of the clan system was the thinking that the land belonged to the chiefs. That more than any other factor, the conquest by the English, or the over-population led to its demise.
Listening to an ancestral language will spark a resonance, even if we dont understand it on a concious level.. Scots Gaelic is like that for me, as is Old English.. Then again.. with a girl as beautiful as this, and how she sings.... how could it not touch the heart?
Nice to hear the old language is becoming in vogue again , thanks to Julie and many others. Oh, and don't let anyone tell you it's a peripheral language only ever confined to the Highlands - a simple glance at the place names on Google maps should suffice. My family name hails from the southern lowlands - Balmaclellan Scottish Gaelic: Baile MhicIllFhaolain ( son of a servant or follower of Saint Fillan.) , meaning town of the MacLellans.
I don't know what it is about this song and music video. I don't speak or understand Galice but in the last 3 months I have been suffering from a deep dark grieving depression over a love I may neever relies and this song gives me peace and hope. Thank you. I have watch this beautiful song hundreds of times it always beautiful to me.
The wisdom and teachings and stories of a people are contained their language. When a language dies, all that the people are dies as well, all the wisdom and traditions. Songs and singers like this keep that alive for the next generation
***** You are right this is the language of the Gales, I also agree with your comment that us Irish are not Celts. But there is a lot of your comments I don't agree with
***** A typing error, but you still knew what I was on about. As for my issues with some of your comments, there of little importance to me and I don't feel the need to discusses or debate them with you, as others have put you straight on those issues...Mórtas Gael
This song reminds me of the Highlander serials back on 1990s. Love both the song and the serial. The song makes me not only feel calm and peaceful, but want to watch Highlander again as well.
Amhran agus amhranai go h-alainn ! xxx if you ever get chance to see this girl with her band or in the band Dual with Irish singer Muireann NicAmhlaoibh ; then do !!....they're superb ...truly !!
Beautifully sung :) This was not originally a Gaelic song. It was composed by Bernard Covert in America sometime before 1850 under the title "Jamie's On The Stormy Seas." (Google New England Music Scrapbook) It was translated into Gaelic by Henry Whyte of Easdale, Argyll and arrived in Canada in the "St Columba Collection of Gaelic Songs."
Which some might not see it that way, but is actually better, as it shows Gaelic as a living, learning culture and language, ready to learn of foreign examples, and not som artifact from a museum.
i would hate to see this language being forgotten it gotta be the the most beautiful out of all the languages on the earth .i would love to teach this to my kids so when the others kids will be guessing what language they are speaking and of course they should teach it in school instead of french and the Spanish which is to common .
AND we get to hear her April 9th, 2013 at Presbyterian College, Clinton, SC 29325! (AND if you've not already, check out her version of "Blackbird" in Gaelic)
im irish, grandma came over to the usa, and life goes on. first off i love women singers im spell bound by the tone ( nature im sure has something to do with this ) but add the accent. and im hooked. even tho growing up with all the women in the family having red hair. i sure i know where i get my stubbornness from. much love from the usa. grew up in oregon, now im in desert because doctors said be good for my health. sure the heat helps with chronic pain. but i sure miss the green, and grabbing my guitar and going for a walk into the woods and just losing my self. should of stayed. i probably be much healthier. but life is but luck to be here, so i cherish what i do have best i can even tho iv been through hell. keep singing, i need translations but even with out i still can make up what i think the song is about by the emotion, and that is good too. creative, one thing schools have done good to get rid of slowly, budget cuts etc... is the excuse. i say its to keep people from dreaming. rock on. chris,
Fionn took the tune from "Jamie's on the Stormy Sea" by Bernard Covert, an American composer. So it was composed on the piano (he was an accompanist as well). There are also suggestions that Covert took it from a pipe tune.
I couldn't understand a word of what she was singing but it sounded absolutely beautiful. Gaelic is the most enchanting language ever, both Irish & Scottish.
Why should she sing in English? Her voice is suited perfectly for Gàidhlig songs. If you want to understand what she's singing maybe you should learn Gàidhlig.
Oh for goodness sake! To all those in the comments below asking wat language this is: word of advice. READ the comments and u will probably find out through the many comments which tell u wat it is. But if u still can't find it, it is Scottish Gaelic, old Scottish language. Still happening and alive in some parts of scotland though. Anyway LOVE this song . It's beautiful and makes me wish I had some Scottish in me. xxxx
I absolutely love this song for 2 reasons. 1) I have a Scottish heritage, which I am very proud of. 2) My love just left for the high seas....boot camp for the Navy. Not quite on the water yet, but he'll get there. lol
I have two choices, I can learn Irish gaelic online, or I can fly to Scotland, and learn their version of gaelic from the one university that actually teaches it. I want to learn some sort of gaelic, and I favor Scottish over Irish, but Irish is more accessible. What do I do!
I WANT TO LEARN GAELIC!! my brain tells me that it's a useless language (I live in Australia and have never even met anyone from Scotland) and I should invest the time and energy learning another language ,, but Gaelic is BEAUTIFUL
This woman has one of the finest voices on planet Earth. She's part of the reason I'm learning Scottish Gaelic now.
This woman should be declared a national treasure....she is so damn good she sings the sweet music...long may she last..
...... should be declared an international treasure .....
smile 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎼🎶🎶🎶🎶
Julie Fowlis is a treasure and a songstress that evokes the beauty of that Celtic land....Scotland.
Thank you Commonwealth Games for pointing me in the direction of Julie Fowlis. I've visited North Uist but am ashamed to say I'd not heard of her. A beautiful voice singing in a beautiful language.
the voice is beautifull

Scottish gaelic makes me proud to be Scottish. I love my country so much
We're the lowest of the low. Renton (just sarcasm) LOL
Julie Fowlis is a great singer! I wish for Brave 2!
Nothing like the voice of a angel singing the gaelic.
I didn't understand a word she sang but I'm pretty sure I just fell in love.
A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
Julie's voice warms the gale, quiets the raging main, and sets the sails for all eternities. Tu is gael mo chridh.

Amen to that!!! F*** Spanish!!! If I
want to learn a language, I would want to learn what my ancestors spoke. Which would be Irish-Gaelic & German.
The death of the clan system was the thinking that the land belonged to the chiefs. That more than any other factor, the conquest by the English, or the over-population led to its demise.

Scots gaelic is so beautiful. I cried.
What a beautiful girl and beautiful voice.

Amazing how a voice can transport you to the beauty of the Western Highlands of Scotland - thanks for keeping the language alive
one beautiful woman, and an amazing voice! i love her!

Keep it alive Julia. The songs you sing today keep the wisdom of our people alive for future generations.

God bless 🙏 ❤

Much love for gaelic
ANGLES??? This is Gaidhlig, ffs!!! The Angles gave us 'English', this is the language of the 'Gaels', and some would say, the 'Gods'!
***** You are right this is the language of the Gales, I also agree with your comment that us Irish are not Celts. But there is a lot of your comments I don't agree with
Oisin O Lochlainn
What are those you take issue with, pray tell?
P.S. Gaels not 'Gales', (the latter is the windy sort!, as in "Blowing a gale"!)

Showed this to a friend and got the response "Damn moon speak!" I was laughing my ass off too much to smack him
This song reminds me of the Highlander serials back on 1990s. Love both the song and the serial. The song makes me not only feel calm and peaceful, but want to watch Highlander again as well.
lovely Julie,, thanks so much
So nice to get this music in a Disney/Pixar Film. There have been a lot of great Disney songs but they don't always have to be Pop Music.
+TristanandIsolt Imagine... Christina Aguilera instead of Julie Fowlis in Pixars Brave. That would be a huge mistake.
The language of angels
I have never heard this before but it sure is beautiful, I like very much
incredible talent
lovely song!

This song is so beautiful :]
I really hope you'll continue to honor the Gaelic language. Where I'm from we have forgotten the "old" language. But a few of us still try to hang on.
im irish, grandma came over to the usa, and life goes on. first off i love women singers im spell bound by the tone ( nature im sure has something to do with this ) but add the accent. and im hooked. even tho growing up with all the women in the family having red hair. i sure i know where i get my stubbornness from. much love from the usa. grew up in oregon, now im in desert because doctors said be good for my health. sure the heat helps with chronic pain. but i sure miss the green, and grabbing my guitar and going for a walk into the woods and just losing my self. should of stayed. i probably be much healthier. but life is but luck to be here, so i cherish what i do have best i can even tho iv been through hell. keep singing, i need translations but even with out i still can make up what i think the song is about by the emotion, and that is good too. creative, one thing schools have done good to get rid of slowly, budget cuts etc... is the excuse. i say its to keep people from dreaming. rock on. chris,

She is so cute with a lovely voice
Thank you
I like it
Aye. My father and grandfather both speak it and I aways wished I could. I've been studying my other heritage language, Lakota, and love it.
Yes she dose in the song touch the sky if I remember correctly
SHE IS MY DAMN CELEB CRUSH #SCOTTISHPRIDE

Fair. My family has though lol. Im actually disappointed my father didn't teach me more when I was young and able to pick such things up easily.
Wow! Her voice reminds me of Celine Dion's a lot. Beautiful!

she sang in Utah and I missed it. I'm in Flagstaff Arizona so not so far away
+TristanandIsolt
I'm right here in Salt Lake, and wooosh! Missed her completely. Woulda gone...
Wish she song more songs in English. Love her voice
I'm personally glad she keeps up her reputation as a stronghold of the gaelic language in the media
***** It's nice but I like her voice better in English. If that makes any sense.
bmaster461603 I get what you mean
Galiec, French, Spanish and Italian are much better languages for singing.
That might be true, but I can't understand that unfortunately and her Brave album was dope.
Proud to be Scottish i might learn how to speak Gaelic
Man. She is a really pretty thing, especially at 2:03. Is she as sweet as she looks?
Geoffrey Harris Much agreed.
Wunderbare Musik/Gesang, leider in einer sehr schweren Fremdsprache...😅
Makes me proud to be Scottish
It appears in the collection "The Celtic Lyre" published in 1885. Old enough I think.
haha not even scottish but this is one of the reasons why i'm moving there wheeeey, that and uni,
Thanks to Fiona Ritchie for introducing this angelic voice to me on today's "Thistle and Shamrock" radio broadcast here in California.
cant seam to stop looking at her lips as she sings
I WANT TO LEARN GAELIC!!
my brain tells me that it's a useless language (I live in Australia and have never even met anyone from Scotland) and I should invest the time and energy learning another language ,, but Gaelic is BEAUTIFUL
But if you taught it to your family it would be the most beautiful way to talk about dinner guests without them realizing it XD
hahahah every member of my family is at least bilingual.. so we do speak in another language in public anyway .. especially if we want to swear :P
#winning
No language is completely useless if it brings joy to those who so much as learn it.
I may have an English name but I am Gaelic in blood and routes!
Julie, the Hebrides, ahhh....
How can anyone point their thumb Down on this and dislike ?
Lord, i get tongue tied just seeing her in a video and hearing her sing, i wouldnt be able to string 2 words together if i ever did meet her irl. : /
Scottish Gaelic :)
